We describe an algorithm that objectively and automatically identifies target regions in the brain for ablation or stimulation during neurosurgery for Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. The algorithm uses microelectrode recordings to distinguish between the target and adjacent anatomic structures during stereotactic neurosurgery. This algorithm uses a novel method of signal feature extraction that enables standard classification algorithms such as support vector machines to perform well. The algorithm was validated on microelectrode recordings acquired near the globus pallidus internus and labeled by the neurosurgeon.

Wavelet Packet Modulation (WPM) uses an arbitrary time-frequency plane tiling to create orthogonal subchannels of different bandwidths and symbol rates in a multichannel system. The Wavelet Packet Tree is implemented by iterating a perfect reconstruction two channel transmultiplexer. We derive operating conditions for the capacity-optimal tree for a given communication channel and power budget. We present a fast tree-selection algorithm which achieves this optimum for the case of a finite complexity transceiver. It is found that optimal-WPM outperforms conventional multichannel systems of equal complexity for ISI channels.

The research applies space-time adaptive processing (STAP) techniques to a pseudo-circular array generated by selectively thinning a rectangular array. A hybrid approach incorporating elevation interferometry and STAP techniques is used. Results show the thinned 16-element pseudo-circular array offers significant detection performance improvement over the baseline factored time-space (FTS) technique operating on a linear array, e.g., an 8-element horizontal linear array. Results are demonstrated for cases with and without range ambiguous clutter. This performance level is achieved using a factor of M less sample support than required for full adaptivity where M represents the number of pulses within a coherent processing interval.

Savings ranging from 36% to 53% in FPGA resources are achieved through a filter design program that simultaneously applies optimum scaling, careful selection of filter order and use of fixed-coefficient multipliers designed with CSD and/or DM techniques. The output of the program is a VHDL description of the optimized hardware that is suitable as input to the Synplify Pro computer program that generates highly optimized FPGA circuits for Xilinx and other FPGA's. © 2001 IEEE.

In this paper, we evaluate the capacity performance of multirate multicell DS-CDMA wireless local loop system with narrowbeam antenna and SINR based power control. Multiple access interference from the surrounding cells in the multicell environment is firstly studied for both uplink and downlink. It can be seen from the results that the capacity can be improved effectively by directional antenna equipped at the subscriber side. More significant improvement can be achieved if multi-element antenna array is employed at the base station. In addition, the analysis is also extended to the situation of multimedia multirate transmission. The results show that, regardless of the voice to data user population ratio, the bit rate traffic supported by the system is roughly constant for a set of predetermined parameter values. © 2001 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

Recent advances in computer arithmetic offer interesting alternative solutions for low-power design. Depending on an assortment of factors that need to be considered, it is worth evaluating the logarithmic number system (LNS) or the residue number system (RNS) for hardware implementations of computationally intensive tasks. As such, the choice of arithmetic can lead to substantial power savings.

The performance of various wavelets, including those known to be well suited for the coding of still images, are evaluated for the multi-resolution motion estimation of video sequences. The multi-resolution motion estimation scheme proposed by Zhang and Zafar (1992), which has been widely cited in the literature, is used as the simulation scheme in this study. The prediction mean square error (PMSE) in the wavelet transform coefficient domain is used in our study as the measure for prediction performance. In order to show the overall rate distortion performance, the number of bits needed to encode the motion vectors is also calculated. Simulation results show that the 7/9 biorthogonal wavelet, one of the best wavelets for the coding of still images, is the best wavelet for the task of multi-resolution motion estimation among the wavelets evaluated in this study.

The standard FIR filter design approach which uses ideal filter coefficients determined by a filter design algorithm such as remez exchange, windowing, or similar techniques, rounding or truncating the ideal coefficients to a specific number of bits and realizing the digital filter using one of the standard FIR filter structures generates filters with considerably more hardware than is required to meet the original specifications. By using a new public-domain computer program written in Matlab, FIR filters can be designed with one-third of the hardware required using standard techniques. In a typical filter example described by the Xilinx application notes, an 8-tap FIR filter can be reduced using the CSD/DM technique from 584 slices to only 186 slices for Synplify Pro 6.0 and from 645 slices to only 214 slices for FPGA express 3.4.
