A large range of application domains, from real-time embedded syst.ms to grid-comp.ting applications, requires distribution. A distribution model used is a set of mechanisms to handle distribution such as distributed object comp.ting, remote procedure call, and message passing. Middleware specifications such as Cobra or Java Message Service propose the API and protocols to support these models. Middleware aims to unify and ease the development of an application on top of a distribution model as general as possible.

This paper addresses the energy consumption of forward error correction (FEC) protocols as used to improve quality-of-service (QoS) for wireless comp.ting devices. The paper also characterizes the effect on energy consumption and QoS of the power saving mode in 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs). Experiments are described in which FEC-encoded audio streams are multicast to mobile comp.ters across a WLAN. Results of these experiments quantify the trade-offs between improved QoS, due to FEC, and additional energy consumption caused by receiving and decoding redundant packets. Two different approaches to FEC are comp.red relative to these metrics. The results of this study enable the development of adaptive software mechanisms that attempt to manage these tradeoffs in the presence of highly dynamic wireless environments.

A typical CS curriculum contains a course on software engineering, which introduces principles and heuristic methods for designing large software syst.ms subject to desirable properties, such as maintainability and extensibility. The nature of this body of knowledge suggests that the best method for teaching it is to use the elab.ration theory of instruction. Applying this theory to software engineering requires a comp.ete inversion in the traditional coverage of topics. We developed a new course, CSE 370, which incorporates this "bottom up" coverage. Using this method, we are able to instill a higher level of cognitive ability in software-engineering methods than we were able to achieve using the old method.

Grids aim at exploiting synergies that result from cooperation of autonomous distributed entities. The synergies that result from grid cooperation include the sharing, exchange, selection, and aggregation of geographically distributed resources such as comp.ters, data bases, software, and scientific instruments for solving large-scale problems in science, engineering, and commerce. For this cooperation to be sustainable, participants need to have economic incentive. Therefore, "incentive" mechanisms should be considered as one of key design parameters of Grid architectures. In this article, we present an overview and status of an open source Grid toolkit, called Gridbus, whose architecture is fundamentally driven by the requirements of Grid economy. Gridbus technologies provide services for both comp.tational and data grids that power the emerging eScience and eBusiness applications.

Guided Google: A meta search engine and its implementation using the Google distributed Web services

With the ubiquity of the Internet and Web, search engines have been sprouting like mushrooms after a rainfall. However, innovative search engines and guided search capabilities have started appearing only in recent years. For instance, Google, which is one of the popular search engines, supports Web services that allow external applications to issue Web search queries that are actually processed using Google's commodity cluster comp.ter made up of 15,000 PC nodes. The goals of these applications are to help ease and guide the searching efforts of novice Web users towards their desired objectives. A number of implementations of such services are emerging. This article proposes a guided meta-search engine called Guided Google that serves. as an advanced interface to the actual *** search engine.

In this paper, we introduce an easy-to-use, platform senseless task parallel programming model called Lily Task, as well as its implementations on SMP and Cluster. Lily Task programming model reflects directly the human thoughts in the parallelism process of a problem. LilyTask supports both data and function parallelisms, as well as dynamic task creation and scheduling. It is very suitable for solving irregular problems. And its performance is satisfying.

In this paper, we focus on the problem of secure multicast in dynamic groups, In this problem, a group of users communicate using a shared group key. Due to the dynamic nature of these groups, to preserve secrecy, it is necessary to change the group key whenever the group membership changes. While the group key is being changed, the group communication needs to be interrupted until the rekeying is comp.ete. This interruption is especially necessary if the rekeying is done because a user has left (or is removed). We split the rekeying cost into two parts: the cost of the critical path - where each user receives the new group key, and the cost of the non-critical path - where each user receives any other keys that it needs to obtain. We present a family of algorithms that show the tradeoff between the cost of the critical path and the cost of the non-critical path. Our solutions allow the group controller to choose the appropriate algorithm for key distribution by considering the requirements on critical and non-critical cost. In our solutions, the group controller can dynamically change the algorithm for key distribution to adapt to changing application requirements. Moreover, we argue that our solutions allow the group controller to effectively manage heterogeneous groups where users have different requirements/capabilities.

Experiments with an IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN show that the packet losses at multiple nodes can exhibit a certain degree of correlation. Analysis and simulation results show that conventional packet loss models do not adequately capture the loss characteristics exhibited in experimental traces. This paper proposes a new approach for modeling packet losses that explicitly accounts for spatial loss correlation. The improved accuracy of the new approach, comp.red to conventional models, is demonstrated by comp.ring results of simulations and experiments.

This paper presents an aspect-oriented approach to dynamic adaptation. A syst.matic process for defining where, when, and how an adaptation is to be incorporated into an application is presented. Specifically, the paper presents a two-phase approach to dynamic adaptation, where the first phase prepares a non-adaptive program for adaptation, and the second phase implements the adaptation at run time. This approach is illustrated with a distributed conferencing application.
