A large range of application domains, from real-time embedded systems to grid-comp.ting applications, requires distribution. A distribution model used is a set of mechanisms to handle distribution such as distributed object comp.ting, remote procedure call, and message passing. Middleware specifications such as Cobra or Java Message Service propose the API and protocols to support these models. Middleware aims to unify and ease the development of an application on top of a distribution model as general as possible.

Finite state machine approach to digital event reconstruction

This paper presents a rigorous method for reconstructing events in digital systems. It is based on the idea, that once the system is described as a finite state machine, its state space can be explored to determine all possible scenarios of the incident. To formalize evidence, the evidential statement notation is introduced. It represents the facts conveyed by the evidence as a series of witness stories that restrict possible comp.tations of the finite state machine. To automate event reconstruction, a generic event reconstruction algorithm is proposed. It comp.tes the set of all possible explanations for the given evidential statement with respect to the given finite state machine. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

It is studied how the introduction of ordered hierarchies in 4-regular grid network structures decreases distances remarkably, while at the same time allowing for simple topological routing schemes. Both meshes and tori are considered;In both cases non-hierarchical structures have power-law dependencies between the number of nodes and the distances in the structures. The perfect square mesh is introduced for hierarchies, and it is shown that applying ordered hierarchies in this way results in logarithmic dependencies between the number of nodes and the distances, resulting in better scaling structures. For example, in a mesh of 391876 nodes the average distance is reduced from 417.33 to 17.32 by adding hierarchical lines. This is gained by increasing the number of lines by 4.20% comp.red to the non-hierarchical structure. A similar hierarchical extension of the torus structure also results in logarithmic dependencies, the relative difference between performance of mesh and torus structures being less significant than for non-hierarchical structures, especially for large structures. The skew and extended meshes are introduced as variants of the perfect square mesh and their performances studied, and it is shown that while they allow for more flexibility in design and construction of structures supporting topological routing, their performances are comp.rable to the performance of the perfect square mesh. Finally suggestions for further research within the field is given.

With the advent in WAN of delay sensitive technical applications, such as remote control, signal propagation delay becomes a major problem. The extent of the problem is analysed by lower bounding the delay in relation to different transmission media. Requirements for reliability and bandwidth are considered. The consequences of this bounding for communication network planning and provisioning are discussed in relation to mitigating the effects of signal propagation delay as a barrier to the penetration of control applications into WAN.

Lily Task programming model reflects directly the human thoughts in the parallelism process of a problem. LilyTask supports both data and function parallelisms, as well as dynamic task creation and scheduling. It is very suitable for solving irregular problems. And its performance is satisfying.

This paper describes a Java API that provides the possibility of accessing a native implementation of PGP. The interaction between C and Java is based on the Java Native Interface (JNI) which has been included in the Java Development Kit (JDK) since version 1.1. The implementation allows to use available PGP implementations in C and, therefore, provides significant performance and security benefits. The paper describes the implementation and comp.res its performance with another approach based on invoking shell scripts.

In our previous works, we advocated the use of distributed search architectures where multiple independently owned and managed topic-specific search engines act as one search system. This approach has significant advantages over the currently predominant centralised Web search model, including low market entry cost for individual search providers and the ability to provide better information coverage. The potential for comp.tition between engines, however, requires new approaches to effective engine management. Many comp.ex issues arise such as deciding what topic an engine should specialise in as well as service pricing strategies. Performance evaluation is an important stage in the development of management algorithms. It is also a challenging problem due to the comp.ex and interactive nature of distributed search systems. We propose a simulation-based approach to this problem that provides for fast low-cost and verifiable performance measurements. In this paper, we describe our simulation environment and present experimental results for a heuristic topic management algorithm obtained using the developed simulator.
