This paper presents how a continuous mission verification process similar than in software engineering can be applied in early spacecraft design and Concurrent Engineering. Following the Model-based systems Engineering paradigm, all engineers contribute to one single centralized data model of the system. The data model is enriched with some extra information to create an executable representation of the spacecraft and its mission. That executable scenario allows for verifications against requirements that have been formalized using appropriate techniques from the field of formal verification. The paper focuses on a current approach of integrating this verification mechanism into our Concurrent Engineering environment. In an example study, we explain how basic mission requirements are created at the beginning of the spacecraft design. After each iteration and change, the integrated verification will be executed. This instantly highlights the effects of the modification and points out potential problems in the design. Using the continuous verification process alongside the Concurrent Engineering process helps to mature both, the requirements and the design itself.

In the early design phase of a spacecraft, various aspects of the system under development are described and modeled using parameters such as masses, power consumption or data rates. In particular power and data parameters are special since their values can change depending on the space-crafts operational mode. These mode-dependent parameters can be easily verified to static requirements like a maximum data rate. Such quick verifications allow the engineers to check the design after every change they apply. In contrast, requirements concerning the mission lifetime such as the amount of down-linked data during the whole mission, demands a more complex procedure. We propose an executable model together with a simulation framework to evaluate complex mission scenarios. In conjunction with a formalized specification of mission requirements it allows a quick verification by means of formal methods.

[Context] Replication Data Management (RDM) aims at enabling the use of data collections from several itera-tions of an experiment. However, there are several major chal-lenges to RDM from integrating data models and data from em-pirical study infrastructures that were not designed to cooperate, e.g., data model variation of local data sources. [Objective] In this paper we analyze RDM needs and evaluate conceptual RDM approaches to support replication researchers. [Method] We adapted the ATAM evaluation process to (a) analyze RDM use cases and needs of empirical replication study research groups and (b) compare three conceptual approaches to address these RDM needs: central data repositories with a fixed data model, heterogeneous local repositories, and an empirical ecosystem. [Results] While the central and local approaches have major issues that are hard to resolve in practice, the empirical ecosys-tem allows bridging current gaps in RDM from heterogeneous data sources. [Conclusions] The empirical ecosystem approach should be explored in diverse empirical environments. © 2013 IEEE.

The analysis of dynamic network data has become an increasingly relevant research issue, showing a high potential for applied use in organizations. To unlock its potential also for the target user group of non-domain experts, we introduce a software prototype, which provides different views on network dynamics, intertwining network analytical measures with options of visual exploration. To demonstrate, how this approach can provide new access to questions of knowledge management and accessibility, a case study of a university department will be discussed. By combining multi-relational data of communication networks with attribute data of individual knowledge domains, we show how essential knowledge and change management issues can be reframed from a social network perspective and further developed towards integrated applications in organizations.

software testing is a well-established approach in modern software engineering practice to improve software products by systematically introducing unit tests on different levels during software development projects. Nevertheless existing software solutions often suffer from a lack of unit tests which have not been implemented during development because of time restrictions and/or resource limitations. A lack of unit tests can hinder effective and efficient maintenance processes. Introducing unit tests after deployment is a promising approach for (a) enabling systematic and automation-supported tests after deployment and (b) increasing product quality significantly. An important question is whether unit tests should be introduced manually by humans or automatically generated by tools. This paper focuses on an empirical investigation of tool-supported and human-based unit testing in a controlled experiment with focus on defect detection effectiveness, false positives, and test coverage of two different testing approaches applied to unfamiliar source code. Main results were that (a) individual testing approaches (human-based and tool-supported testing) showed advantages for different defect classes, (b) tools delivered a higher number of false positives, and (c) higher test coverage. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Planning a spacecraft requires the expert knowledge from diverse disciplines, such as propulsion or structure. Reliable communication between the experts is crucial, as the individual requirements of a satellite's various subsystems heavily depend on each other. Today, early mission design sessions are often held in specially designed rooms, so-called concurrent engineering facilities. Here, the experts come together and directly discuss with each other in a shared place, enabling them to find a common ground much quicker. Nevertheless, in certain aspects it remains difficult for the experts to share and describe their knowledge within the team. In particular for configuration purposes it is a hurdle to verbally discuss positions and orientations of different parts. We propose a new approach of using shared interactive visualization for the configuration task, which enables every engineer to individually place parts and to alter it in case of discrepancies.

The DLR developed the open source software framework RCE to support the collaborative and distributed work in the shipyard industry. From a technology side of view a software from the shipbuilding field has many requirements in common with aerospace software projects. Accordingly, RCE has become the basis for further projects within the DLR. Over the last years of usage a subset of frequently used software components could be derived and are provided by the RCE framework. In particular, the workflow engine, allowing the integration of different domain-specific tools from local and remote locations into one overall calculation has become important for various projects. We present RCE and show how its software components are reused in two aerospace applications.

This paper proposes new fuzzy-based scheme providing position information vital for smart home applications. The scheme runs efficiently on the economical wireless ZigBee nodes and uses the link quality indicator (LQI) measured without the need for any additional hardware. It uses fuzzy logic to represent measure noise and surrounding environmental impacts. Position estimation is based upon the fuzzy information provided by all available ZigBee nodes and the surrounding environment is modeled by assembling a set of representative fuzzy vectors. Fuzzy levels are determined by applying the K-means algorithm given the LQI distribution as input. The scheme performance is compared to two popular schemes, the I 3 BM and the Environment Adaptive. The three are implemented using the Jennic JN5148 ZigBee PRO kit. It is demonstrated that for regular motion the proposed scheme significantly outperforms the other two without high computational cost, slow response, or large memory requirement.

Online shopping has developed to a stage where catalogs have become very large and diverse. Thus, it is a challenge to present relevant items to potential customers within a very few interactions. This is even more so when users have no defined shopping objectives but operate in an opportunistic mindset. This problem is often tackled by recommender systems. However, these systems rely on consistent user interaction patterns to predict items of interest. In contrast, we propose to adapt the classical information retrieval (IR) paradigm for the purpose of accessing catalog items in a context of un-predictable user interaction. Accordingly, we present a novel information access strategy based on the notion of interest rather than relevance. We detail the design of a scalable browsing system including learning capabilities joint with a limited-memory model. Our approach enables locating interesting items within a few steps while not requiring good quality descriptions. Our system allows customer to seamlessly change browsing objectives without having to start explicitly a new session. An evaluation of our approach based on both artificial and real-life datasets demonstrates its efficiency in learning and adaptation.
