Market players that can respond to critical business events faster than their competitors will end up as winners in the fast moving economy. Event-based systems have been developed and used to implement networked and adaptive business environments based on loosely coupled systems. In this paper we introduce Event Cloud, a system that allows searching for business events in a variety of contexts that also take the relationships between events into consideration. Event Cloud supports knowledge workers in their daily operations in order to perform investigations and analyses based on historical events. It enables users to search in large sets of historical events which are correlated and indexed in a data staging process with an easy-to-use search interface. For improving the search results, we propose an index based ranking system. We present an architecture for the Event Cloud system, which supports a continuous near real-time integration of business events with the aim of decreasing the time it takes to make them available for searching purposes. We have fully implemented the proposed architecture and discuss implementation details.

In recent years business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce has been subject to major rethinking. A paradigm shift from document centric file-based interchange of business information to process-centric and service-based information exchange can be observed. On a business level, a lot of work has been done to capture business models and collaborative business processes of an enterprise. On a technical level, the focus in software development is moving towards service-oriented architectures (SOA). These transitions on both levels promise a market entry at lower costs and an easier adjustment to changing market conditions. Hence, an overwhelming quantity of specifications and approaches emerged in the past targeting the area of B2B - these are partly competing and overlapping. In this paper, we provide a survey of the most promising ones at both levels and classify them using the Open-edi reference model standardized by ISO. Furthermore, we discuss how individual specifications on different levels fit together - starting from business models via business processes to artifacts ready for deployment. © 2007 IEEE.

Fraud has been an issue since the very beginnings of commerce. Today, as business moved into the online era, this topic has become a major issue in e-commerce. In this paper, we introduce a solution architecture for detection and preventing fraud in real time by using an event-based system called SARI (sense and respond infrastructure). We present the architecture and components for a real-time fraud management solution which can be easily adapted to the business needs of domain experts and business users. The SARI system provides functions to monitor customer behavior as well as it can steer and optimize customer processes in real time. For illustrating our approach, we show fraud scenarios of an online gambling service provider.

Today's networked business environment requires systems which are adaptive and easy to integrate. Event-based systems have been developed and used to control business processes with loosely coupled systems. Research and product development focused so far on efficiency issues, but neglected simulation support to build robust and efficient event-driven applications. In this paper, we propose a simulation model that allows imitating real-world operations of business processes in order to improve efficiency and effectiveness of event-based systems. Our approach uses discrete eventsimulation and a graphical model for defining event sequences for business process scenarios. For better handling the complexity and variability of business processes, we use a hybrid simulation approach, which is able to combine various ways to compose event sequences and generate representative event data. As an example, we show how annotated WS-BPEL process descriptions can be used to automatically generate event sequences representing typical process execution paths for simulation purposes.

In this paper we identify tasks in the field of conference management where methods from the domain of information retrieval, information management and information organization can assist the organizer, the program committee member and the participants. In particular, we focus on tasks, where (1) the quality of the conference can be increased by assisting in the creation of an improved review process by better matching the reviewers expertise with the paper topics, (2) the conference participants profit by allowing them better access to the wealth of information accumulated throughout a conference series and at the same time (3) reducing the workload of conference organizer by partially automating tedious tasks, such as review assignment and the creation of review plans. We report on case studies from a medium-sized (around 400 participants) as well as a large (more than 700 participants) conference in computer science as well as in medical domains.

Improving reuse in industrial engineering for solution providers is more and more recognized as a key to economic success. Improving reuse increases the quality of the engineered systems, shortens engineering time, and decreases engineering costs regarding the development of customer-specific solutions. The GDES-Reuse project is therefore developing an integrated set of methods for assessing an organization's reuse practices, identifying its reuse potential and guiding the selection, planning and implementation of improvement actions. The paper reports on the project's work on developing an ISO/IEC 15504 conformant process reference model for reuse in industrial engineering. Based on an overview and the background of the GDES-Reuse improvement methodology, the paper focuses on presenting the structure of the reference model and on describing the necessary enhancements to the ISO/IEC 15504 framework to enable the evaluation of organizational reuse maturity and the integration with a staged model of reuse maturity. A summary of the experiences and insights gained and of the current state of methodology development and future work together with considerations on the applicability of the project's results to the domain of software engineering round up the paper.

With the rising popularity of digital music archives the need for new access methods such as interactive exploration or similarity-based search become significant. In this paper we present the PlaySOM, as well as the PocketSOMPlayer, two novel interfaces that enable one to browse a music collection by navigating a map of clustered music tracks and to select regions of interest containing similar tracks for playing. The PlaySOM system is primarily designed to allow interaction via a large-screen device, whereas the PocketSOMPlayer is implemented for mobile devices, supporting both local as well as streamed audio replay. This approach offers content-based organization of music as an alternative to conventional navigation of audio archives, i.e. flat or hierarchical listings of music tracks that are sorted and filtered by meta information. © 2005 Queen Mary, University of London.

The self-organizing map (SOM) is a very popular neural network model for data analysis and visualization of high-dimensional input data. The growing hierarchical self-organizing map (GHSOM) - being one of the many architectures based on the SOM - has the property of dynamically adapting its architecture during training by map growth as well as creating a hierarchical structure of maps, thus reflecting hierarchical relations in the data. This allows for viewing portions of the data at different levels of granularity. We review different SOM quality measures and also investigate alternative strategies as candidates for guiding the growth process of the GHSOM in order to improve the hierarchical representation of the data.
