In this paper, we present a time-delay approach to gradient-based bounded extremum seeking (ES) with large measurement constant delay, for an unknown single-input static quadratic map. We assume that the extremum point and the Hessian $H$ belong to known intervals, whereas the sign of $H$ is known. We apply a time-delay approach to the bounded ES system and arrive at the neutral type system with a nominal linear delayed system. We present the latter system as a retarded one and employ variation of constants formula for practical stability analysis. Explicit conditions in terms of simple scalar inequalities depending on tuning parameters and delay are established to guarantee the practical stability of the bounded ES control systems. Given any delay and neighborhood of the extremum point and through the solution of the constructed inequalities, we find lower bounds on the dither period that ensures the practical stability.

In this article, we introduce a time-delay approach to gradient-based extremum seeking (ES) in the continuous domain for n-dimensional (nD) static quadratic maps. As in the recently introduced (for 2D maps in the continuous domain), we transform the system to the time-delay one (neutral type system). This system is $\mathbf{O}(\varepsilon)$ . ‘perturbation of the averaged linear ODE system. We further explicitly present the neutral system as the linear ODE, where $\mathrm{O}(\varepsilon)$ -terms are considered as disturbances with distributed delays of the length of the small parameter $\varepsilon$ . Quantitative (for uncertain map) and qualitative (for unknown map) practical stability analyses are provided by employing a variation of constants formula that greatly simplifies the results compared to the previously used Lyapunov-Krasovskii (L-K) method. The new approach also simplifies the conditions and improves the results. Examples from the literature illustrate the efficiency of the new approach, allowing essentially large uncertainty of the Hessian matrix with bounds on $\varepsilon$ that are not too small.

the DC/AC interaction and the presence of the high nonlinearity in the HVDC links, these problems needs to examine the behavior of the system in steady-state and transient conditions in order to define the great role of protection functions and control parameters. Furthermore, control and protection systems are a vital part of an HVDC system to guarantee the safety, reliability, and stability of its operation. This research aim is to provide the solutions for control and protection problems that can occur in HVDC link. In this paper, we study how we mitigate this serious malfunction of commutation failure process in the operation of HVDC converters. Indeed some protection functions like the commutation failure prevention. Furthermore, HVDC transmission systems are vulnerable to DC faults and its protection becomes ever more important with the fast growth in the number of installations. Finally, the dynamics of the studied power system including the HVDC link is thoroughly investigated through various simulation scenarios.

Conventional multiagent control strategies rely either on pre-defined operational patterns, or complex inter-agent communications. While the former provides simple yet compelling results, the latter allows to achieve goals in complex environments with unpredictable disturbances. However, designing local networked control solutions for large-scale robotic systems is extremely challenging. A novel way to control complex systems by manipulating system clusters as sub-systems is proposed. The relation between sparsity and cluster flows is manifested in the new developed approach to estimate cluster structure of a group of robots based only on a few local observations of their states. Aiming to perform necessary measurements of all N agent states, the compressed sensing methodology is used to obtain ∼ logN randomized aggregated measurements, followed by the corresponding series of local voting protocols for the network to reach a common aggregated state with randomized weights. Thus, the cluster control synthesis by these compressed measurements is computationally efficient, and yet precise. Effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated in numeric simulations, where adaptive observation feedback cluster control outperforms conventional strategies.

The number of manufacturing jobs has been consistently increasing thanks to the rapidly evolving landscape and the newly adopted strategic plan of US manufacturing. However, there have been rising concerns in recent years about the problem-solving skills of engineering students, who will soon become the next generation of the US workforce. Such circumstances call for systematic evaluation and a better understanding of engineering students’ problem-solving. This paper builds a virtual reality (VR)-based manufacturing environment and adopts a data-driven analytical workflow to evaluate engineering students’ problem-solving performance. Specifically, students perform assembly tasks to produce car toys that satisfy the pre-defined requirements within the VR craft-production manufacturing system. We collect in situ eye-tracking data containing spatial-temporal dynamics of eye movements and abstract their latent features via a long short-term memory (LSTM)-based supervised representation learning for problem-solving performance evaluation. This work outperforms the traditional performance metrics-based evaluation by incorporating the nonlinear dynamics summarized from the in situ production process. Experimental results show that learned feature representations provide significantly more distinguishable patterns when categorizing the students’ problem-solving performance than traditional performance metrics. The proposed evaluation workflow has a broader impact on facilitating the problem-solving assessment across a wide range of manufacturing systems and worker training programs. © 2024, The Authors. Enhancing realism in LiDAR scene generation with CSPA-DFN and linear cross-attention via Diffusion Transformer model

Point cloud diffusion models have found extensive applications in autonomous driving and robotics. However, there is still a big gap between their generated LiDAR scene samples and real-world data in terms of visual quality. This discrepancy primarily arises from the loss of detailed information during the decoding process from latent space and the lack of guidance from global 3D structural information in the point cloud generation process, leading to distortions and artifacts in LiDAR scene samples. In this paper, we propose a novel LiDAR Diffusion Transformer Model that integrates Channel-Spatial Parallel Attention and Dilation Fusion Network (CSPA-DFN) with a linear cross-attention post-processing module to refine the generated LiDAR scene samples. Specifically, CSPA-DFN is designed to simultaneously emphasize detailed features across different channels and spatial locations in parallel, leveraging multi-scale dilated convolutions and channel grouping to preserve and enhance these detailed features. In order to provide global 3D structural information and balance performance and efficiency, we design a post-processing module that fuses voxelized features and range images using a linear ReLU cross-attention mechanism. Our approach is evaluated on the unconditional generation task using the KITTI-360 and nuScenes datasets, achieving the state-of-the-art results in LiDAR scene's generation quality. Furthermore, by incorporating semantic labels and camera views into the latent space, in addition to enhancing the model's semantic understanding capability for LiDAR scenes, our method also demonstrates additional performance improvements compared to previous works in terms of LiDAR scene's visual quality. This paper examines county-level characteristic factors contributing to opioid-related overdose deaths in the United States. We categorized factors into three groups: demographic, socio-economic, and health care environmental group. These features were used as predictors to model the overdose deaths from all types of opioids including prescription (e.g., oxycodone and hydrocodone) and illicit opioids (e.g., heroin and fentanyl) to investigate general trend, as well as separate models for heroin and fentanyl. Multilevel mixed-effect regression was adopted to adequately model grouping effect across counties.

Unfractionated heparin (UFH) is commonly used in the intensive care unit (ICU) to prevent blood clotting. Recently, many researchers focus on the development of data- driven methods to solve UFH related problems, which usually involves time series analysis. The performance of data-driven methods depends on whether the inter-correlation of attributes (or variables) in the dataset is closely examined and addressed. This study performs attribute selection, optimal time delay and inter-attributes relations on ICU time series data, in order to provide insights of time series data for UFH related problems. Medical records of 3211 patients with 22 attributes extracted from MIMIC (Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care) III database are used for the experiment. Experimental result shows that some of commonly selected attributes in the literature are less sensitive to the variations of UFH injection. Furthermore, some attributes are inter-dependent, which can increase the complexity of data-driven models, implying that the number of attributes could be reduced. There are 9 attributes found highly related and fast responding in 22 commonly used attributes. This study shows strong potential to provide clinicians with information about sensitive attributes that can help determine the UFH injection policy in ICU.

Long waiting time has attracted public attention significantly due to the negative effects on patients' satisfaction with health systems. In the United States, waiting time of a patient to see a physician for the first time has been increased by 30% since 2014. This is in part due to the ineffective allocation between physicians and patients, and in part due to growing population needing healthcare and the restriction introduced by insurance policies. There is an urgent need to develop matching mechanisms with the consideration of preferences from both patients and physicians to improve matching results. This paper presents a new allocation framework between physicians and patients to shorten the patient waiting time as well as improve the allocation effectiveness. We leverage the matching theory and extend the conventional deferred acceptance algorithm to a discrete-time stable marriage framework (i.e., discrete deferred acceptance algorithm, DDA) with the consideration of uncertainty constraints introduced by insurance types. We benchmark our proposed algorithm with the current practice (i.e., continuous deferred acceptance scheme, CDA) under different scenarios when the demand-supply ratio (DSR) varies. Experimental results show that when the DSR is more than 1.25, DDA outperforms traditional CDA practices in terms of waiting time and matching regret. The proposed framework shows strong potential to tackle the problem of long waiting time in the healthcare system.

Multi-scale graph modeling and analysis of locomotion dynamics towards sensor-based dementia assessment

Dementia is a general neurodegenerative disorder beyond normal aging, which is not only overwhelming for the patients, but also negatively affects their caregivers and families. In the state of the art, paper-based survey methods such as the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) are widely used for the assessment of dementia conditions. However, these methods require lab visits or administration from nurses, physicians and examiners, and are limited in the ability to track temporal degradation (or daily variations) of dementia conditions. With rapid advances in sensing technology, there is growing interest in the development of new, sensor-based methods that provide more flexibility in dementia monitoring and require minimal interventions from practitioners. In this article, we propose a new, sensor-based method that estimates dementia conditions with daily locomotion data. The proposed methodology is evaluated and validated with both simulation and real-world case studies. Experimental results show the compelling predictive accuracy, with both true positive and true negative rates above 85%. This article shows that sensor-based methods have great potential for real-time monitoring of temporal variations of dementia conditions from daily gait locomotion dynamics. © 2019, © 2019 IISE.
