In the framework of zero-defect manufacturing, an advanced sensor monitoring procedure aimed at detecting the process conditions leading to surface defects in Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM) is proposed. WEDM experimental tests were carried out with the employment of a multiple sensor monitoring system to acquire voltage and current signals in the gap between workpiece and wire electrode at the high sampling rate of 100 MHz. In order to extract from the acquired signals the most relevant features that can be useful in the identification of abnormal process conditions, an advanced sensor signal processing methodology based on signal feature extraction for the construction of sensor fusion pattern vectors is proposed and implemented.

A primary motivation for this study comes from the need to improve the ability of polymer matrix composites to withstand lightning strikes. In particular, we are concerned with lightning strike damage in composite wind turbine blades. The problem is essentially multiphysic, as the electric-current-induced temperature in the composite blade subjected to a lightning strike may reach up to 1,200 °C, leading to extensive thermal damage including surface damage, delamination, cracks, matrix decomposition, fiber breakage and sublimation, and abrupt failure of the blade. In this work, the thermal response of the polymer-matrix composite laminate used in a Sandia 100-meter All-glass Baseline Wind Turbine Blade (SNL 100-00) subjected to lightning strike is studied. The tip region composite panel is considered, as it has been reported in the literature that the blade tip is more susceptible to lightning strike than the remaining parts of the blade. A physical model to show the surface interaction between the lightning arc and the composite structure has been developed. The model provides time- and electric-current-dependent variation of the lightning arc radius and lightning-current-induced heat flux generated at the composite surface. The temperature-dependent thermal properties of the VectorPly E-LT 5500 unidirectional [0]2 E-glass fiber vinyl ester resin matrix fabric and SNL triaxial [±45]2[0]2 E-glass fiber vinyl ester resin matrix fabric used in the wind blade tip composite panel were derived using available experimental data. The formulated nonlinear transient heat transfer problem with moving boundary is solved using the finite element method. The solution procedure accounts for phase transitions in the materials, and the obtained results include temperature field profiles and evolution of the thermal damage.

In this study, titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) films were prepared on Corning glass substrates by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering and treated without and with O 2 plasma conditions, and then were used to fabricate metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors (PDs). The effects of the changes on TiO 2 films were investigated by using field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), photoluminescence (PL) system and four-point probe measurement. With a 360-nm illumination and 5 V applied bias, it was found that the responsivities of the fabricated TiO 2 PDs without and with 2 minutes O 2 plasma treatment were 36 and 153 A/W, respectively.

Human sensory assessment is a new approach to objectively gather subjec-tive data concerning humans' perception of space and emotional reactions towards space in real-time. The resulting data enables urban planners to get a more comprehensive view of interdependencies between people and their urban environment. This paper shows the methodical framework be-ginning from gathering over processing and analyzing to visualizing emo-tional reactions of selected participants. The research aims to optimize and automatize the processing between human sensory assessment, geo-and mobile-data. The challenge lies in joining and processing the generated various data types to gain visual tangible results. In order to apply the complete methodical repertoire, different case studies and exemplary anal-yses were conducted in Germany and Egypt, dealing with the exemplary research question "How do people of different cultures perceive their envi-ronment in different countries?".
