Studying the transformation of cluster galaxies contributes a lot to have a clear picture of evolution of the universe. Towards that we are studying different properties (morphology, star formation, AGN contribution and metallicity) of galaxies in clusters up to z ∼ 1.0 taking three different clusters: ZwCl0024 + 1652 at z ∼ 0.4, RXJ1257 + 4738 at z ∼ 0.9 and Virgo at z ∼ 0.0038. For ZwCl0024 + 1652 and RXJ1257 + 4738 clusters we used tunable filters data from GLACE survey taken with GTC 10.4 m telescope and other public data, while for Virgo we used public data. We did the morphological classification of 180 galaxies in ZwCl0024 + 1652 using galSVM, where 54 % and 46 % of galaxies were classified as early-type (ET) and late-type (LT) respectively. We did a comparison between the three clusters within the clustercentric distance of 1 Mpc and found that ET proportion (decreasing with redshift) dominates over the LT (increasing with redshift) throughout. We finalized the data reduction for ZwCl0024 + 1652 cluster and identified 46 [OIII] and 73 Hβ emission lines. For this cluster we have classified 22 emission line galaxies (ELGs) using BPT-NII diagnostic diagram resulting with 14 composite, 1 AGN and 7 star forming (SF) galaxies. We are using these results, together with the public data, for further analysis of the variations of properties in relation to redshift within z < 1.0.

The Sport Policy of Ethiopia, declared in 1998, underlines the importance of developing public sport and recreational facilities to the community for enhancing mass participation. However, after 20 years of its implementation, residents in addis ababa still play ball games on derelict areas and complain about scarcity of physical activity resources. This study investigated the provision of resources and its association with participation level of adult residents in LTPA in Nefas Silk Lafto sub-city, addis ababa. Adult residents (n= 384), sport facility experts (n= 32) and sport facility department heads (n = 2) participated in the study. We used questionnaires, observations, interview and GIS measures for collecting data and analyzed them by descriptive methods,t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression. Poor availability, low participation and positive association between facility provision and level of participation were indicated. The article argues that there is a gap in realizing policy objective, which has its roots in providing resources.

Flood risk zone mapping using rational model in a highly weathered Nitisols of Abakaliki Local Government Area, South-eastern Nigeria

The lack of spatially explicit flood hazard mapping has hampered the development of appropriate flood interventions at community levels in Nigeria. This paper reports on a work conducted to develop a local government level flood hazard map to delineation flood vulnerable areas. Flood vulnerability mapping in this work was addressed from a perspective of administrative unit as the unit of investigation. The study is anchored on the Modeling Flow based on Relational Rule for flood assessment using ArcGIS in combination with modified rational model. The output of the modified rational model was integrated into the Geographic Information Systems environment by the arithmetic overlay operation methods. The results show that the delineated areas/sub-catchments however experienced the same rainfall intensity of 414.2 mm/h but the flood extents in the areas are different. For instance, the very high flood risk zone covers about 22.8% of the study area while the low risk zone covers about 44.3% and the possible areas likely to experience seasonal floods with a given rainfall input are mostly below 40 m elevation. The results of this study will be helpful to prioritize development efforts at grassroot in the study location and to formulate flood adaptation strategies. © 2019 The Author(s). Recently, discovering high-performance electrocatalytic materials for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) has been one of the most crucial tasks. This paper successfully fabricates low-cost plate-like bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) material through a simple one-step hydrothermal route, employed as a novel electrocatalyst to adorn the graphite felt (GF) for use as the negative electrode in VRFB. The experimental results show that BiVO4-3h exhibits the optimal electrocatalytic activity and reversibility for the vanadium redox couples among all samples. The energy efficiency of the VRFB cell assembled with BiVO4-decorated GF as the negative electrode is found to be 75.42% at 100 mA cm−2, which is about 10.24% more efficient than that of the cell assembled with heat-treated graphite felt (HT-GF) electrode. The possible reasons for the activity enhancement can be ascribed to the existence of oxygen vacancies in the BiVO4 lattice structure and the relatively high surface area of BiVO4, which provide more active sites for facilitating the vanadium redox reactions. Furthermore, the BiVO4-GF electrode obstructs the competitive irreversible hydrogen evolution reaction on the negative side of the cell, and it also has better wettability. Impressively, BiVO4-GF as the negative electrode shows good stability over 100 cycles. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Liquefaction is one of the geotechnical earthquake issues when a soil subjected to high strain due to dynamic loading and causes damage of the infrastructure. The main objective of this study is to predict the ground motion parameter and evaluate the potential of soil to liquefaction in Hawassa town. The site was characterized and classified based on the SPT-N values and average shear wave velocity (Vs30). The SPT-N value in Hawassa town ranges from 5-50. Whilst the Vs30 varies from 245-365m/s. The site class was C and D based on the NEHRP (2015) whereas B and C based on the EC8 (2003). The effects of the liquefaction are predicted using equivalent linear response analysis and liquefaction hazard evaluation methods at the five typical sites. Equivalent linear response analysis was used to determine local site effect in terms of PGA (g), SA (g) and maximum strain (%).Whereas the liquefaction hazard evaluations were done by liquefaction susceptibility criteria, factor of safety (FS), liquefaction potential index (LPI), probability of liquefaction (PL) and probability of liquefaction induced ground failure (PG). The predicted ground motion parameter shown: (i) PGA (g) values at surface ranges from 0.16g to 0.27g, (ii) the maximum strain (%) is less than 0.01 and (iii) the SA (g) vary from 0.7g to 1.2g with in the period interval of 0.1se and 1sec. The FS was less than unity for the typical one site and greater than unity for the other typical 4 sites. As a result, the liquefaction will be occurred only at the typical one site than other typical four sites for the given input motion. It is also evident that the typical one site has very high LPI, very likely to the PL and extremely high to PG than the other typical four sites. The findings from the present study will be helpful in retrofitting, analysis, design of structures and solving practical challenges in earthquake engineering. © 2021, CC BY.

The impact of CMEs on the critical frequency of F2-layer ionosphere (foF2)

The ionospheric critical frequency (foF2) from ionosonde measurements at geographic high, middle, and low latitudes are analyzed with the occurrence of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in long term variability of the solar cycles. We observed trends of monthly maximum foF2 values and monthly averaged values of CME parameters such as speed, angular width, mass, and kinetic energy with respect to time. The impact of CMEs on foF2 is very high at high latitudes and low at low latitudes. The time series for monthly maximum foF2 and monthly-averaged CME speed are moderately correlated at high and middle latitudes.

Indicine cattle, also referred to as zebu (Bos taurus indicus), play a central role in pastoral communities across a wide range of agro-ecosystems, from extremely hot semiarid regions to hot humid tropical regions. However, their adaptive genetic changes following their dispersal into East Asia from the Indian subcontinent have remained poorly documented. Here, we characterize their global genetic diversity using high-quality whole-genome sequencing data from 354 indicine cattle of 57 breeds/populations, including major indicine phylogeographic groups worldwide. We reveal their probable migration into East Asia was along a coastal route rather than inland routes and we detected introgression from other bovine species. Genomic regions carrying morphology-, immune-, and heat-tolerance-related genes underwent divergent selection according to Asian agro-ecologies. We identify distinct sets of loci that contain promising candidate variants for adaptation to hot semi-arid and hot humid tropical ecosystems. Our results indicate that the rapid and successful adaptation of East Asian indicine cattle to hot humid environments was promoted by localized introgression from banteng and/or gaur. Our findings provide insights into the history and environmental adaptation of indicine cattle.
