Total mercury(THg)levels were determined in sediment(n=22)and muscle of Clarias gariepinus(n=36)in dry and rainy seasons from Akaki River catchment and Aba Samuel Reservoir,Ethiopia in *** analyses of THg were performed using cold vapor-atomic absorption spectrometer(CV-AAS)after acid digestion *** relationship of THg levels to size of the fish has also been *** THg levels in sediments range from 9.5e43.8 mg/kg dry wt in the dry and 20.6e175.4 mg/kg dry wt in the rainy *** study indicated that the levels of THg in sediments varies spatially and *** both seasons,THg levels increased from upstream to downstream areas,revealing increased anthropogenic inputs of mercury *** was also found that the THg concentrations in all the sediment samples were below the US EPA guideline value of 200 mg/kg dry *** THg levels in Clarias gariepinus were in the range from 360e924 mg/kg dry wt in the dry and 325e1233 mg/kg dry wt in the rainy seasons,and had positive relationship to the total length and body *** THg concentrations found in Clarias gariepinus were within the acceptable guidelines of the FAO/***,the muscle of Clarias gariepinus from the study area is not hazardous to human health with respect to ***,the average value of THg seems to be slightly higher than results reported from other Ethiopian freshwater ***,monitoring of mercury species in sediment and different organs of fish are strongly recommended.

Despite the substantial role that chickens have played in human societies across the world,both the geographic and temporal origins of their domestication remain *** address this issue,we analyzed 863 genomes from a worldwide sampling of chickens and representatives of all four species of wild jungle fowl and each of the five subspecies of red jungle fowl (RJF).Our study suggests that domestic chickens were initially derived from the RJF subspecies Gallus gallus spadiceus whose present-day distribution is predominantly in southwestern China,northern Thailand and *** their domestication,chickens were translocated across Southeast and South Asia where they interbred locally with both RJF subspecies and other jungle fowl *** addition,our results show that the White Leghorn chicken breed possesses a mosaic of divergent ancestries inherited from other subspecies of *** the strong episodic gene flow from geographically divergent lineages of jungle fowls,our analyses show that domestic chickens undergo genetic adaptations that underlie their unique behavioral,morphological and reproductive *** study provides novel insights into the evolutionary history of domestic chickens and a valuable resource to facilitate ongoing genetic and functional investigations of the world's most numerous domestic animal.

AGN and star-formation properties of inside-out assembled galaxy candidates at z < 0.1

We study a sample of 48127 galaxies selected from the SDSS MPA-JHU catalogue, with log M✶/M = 10.73 − 11.03 and z 50) when compared to that of the galaxy as a whole, contrary to lower or higher mass galaxies which show consistent assembly times at all radii. Hence, we refer to these galaxies as Inside-Out Assembled Galaxy (IOAG) candidates. We find that the majority of IOAG candidates with well-detected emission lines are classified as either AGN (40%) or composite (40%) in the BPT diagram. We also find that the majority of our sources are located below the main sequence of star formation, and within the green valley or red sequence. Most BPT-classified star-forming IOAG candidates have spiral morphologies and are in the main sequence, whereas Seyfert 2 and composites have mostly spiral morphologies but quiescent star formation rates (SFRs). We argue that a high fraction of IOAG candidates seem to be in the process of quenching, moving from the blue cloud to the red sequence. Those classified as AGN have systematically lower SFRs than star-forming galaxies suggesting that AGN activity may be related to this quenching. However, the spiral morphology of these galaxies remains in place, suggesting that the central star-formation is suppressed before the morphological transformation occurs. Background: On January 24, 2025, the United States government issued an executive order to freeze all foreign aid programs, including The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), for 90 days. A limited waiver option became available, but its implementation remains incomplete. We estimated the impact of these policy changes on HIV deaths and new infections in seven sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries—Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe –, which together account for about half of all people living with HIV in SSA. Methods: We used STDSIM, an established individual-based simulation model, and previously published quantifications for the seven countries. We predicted changes in HIV deaths and new infections over the period 2025–2030 for four scenarios: (1) Executive order—proportional, where treatment disruption was proportional to the country-specific PEPFAR's share of total HIV funding;(2) Executive order—realistic, assuming near-total system collapse due to program dependencies;and (3–4) Waiver scenarios where treatment was resumed after 4 or after 8 weeks. Resumptions of programs accounted for delays due to organizational and logistical challenges. Findings: A 90-day funding freeze would result in 60 thousand [95% UI: 49–71 thousand] excess HIV deaths for the Executive order—proportional scenario. This number would increase to 74 thousand excess HIV deaths [95% UI: 63–89 thousand] for the Executive order—realistic scenario. Under a 4-week and 8-week waiver scenario, projected excess HIV deaths ranged between 21 thousand [95% UI: 15–28 thousand] and 28 thousand [95% UI: 22–36 thousand] respectively. Excess new infections ranged between 35 and 103 thousand for the different scenarios. Interpretation: The sudden cessation of PEPFAR funding likely results in tens of thousands of HIV deaths and new infections. We describe the project aimed at finding initial distributions of binary stars over masses of components, mass ratios of them, semi-major axes and eccentricities of orbit, and also pairing scenarios by means of Monte-Carlo modeling of the sample of about 1000 visual binaries of luminosity class V with Gaia DR1 TGAS trigonometric parallax larger than 2 mas, limited by 2 ≤ ≤ 200 arcsec,1 ≤ 9.5,2 ≤ 11.5, ∆ ≤ 4, which can be considered as free of observational incompletness effects. We present some preliminary results which allow already to reject initial distributions of binaries over semi-major axes of the orbits more steep than ∝−1.5 © 2018 CEUR-WS. All Rights Reserved.

Africa, the world's second-largest continent is home to 1.5 billion people, accounting for nearly 20% of the global population, (60% under age 25). By 2050, Africa's population will be 2.5 billion, and by 2035, more young Africans will be entering the workforce each year than in the rest of the world combined. Africa also hosts a rich social, cultural, and geopolitical diversity across its 5 geopolitical zones covering 54 countries. It is the most genetically, culturally, and linguistically diverse region on the planet. However, Africa's contribution to the global economy could be more significant if it urgently embraces the brain economy and leads in the development of new methodologies and approaches which can be exported around the world. In this paper, we explain our strategy to advance the Yaoundé Declaration for the Brain Economy, Brain Health, and Brain Capital. The Declaration has been endorsed by Cameroon's President, His Excellency Paul Biya, and demonstrates African leadership in global brain and society innovations, laying out a roadmap for how Africa can outcompete other economies by deftly deploying brain science-inspired policies and investments. We outline a new economic approach for African jobs, economic growth, sustainability, resilience, health, and well-being. The brain economy offers a broader framework than the current sustainable development goals (SDG) agenda. The Yaoundé Declaration is trans-disciplinary and cross-cutting across sectors: 32 sitting members of government from different sectors having co-authored this paper. It aligns with many aspects of the United Nations Pact for the Future and can accelerate the SDG. © 2025
