SWENET, the network community for software engineering education, is an NSF funded project to develop curriculum modules of value to faculty members desiring to incorporate software engineering concepts in new or existing courses. By design, the modules are self-contained instructional units ranging from a single lecture to approximately one week of course material. In this way, instructors can adopt, adapt, and arrange modules as appropriate to their courses. This presentation will provide an update on the status of the project including a report of current progress and problems encountered. The session will also address the future of the course materials collection and solicit input on ways to provide ongoing support to the community of software engineering researchers.

We consider the problem of allocating a number of exploration tasks to a team of mobile robots. Each task consists of a target location that needs to be visited by a robot. The objective of the allocation is to minimize the total cost, that is, the sum of the travel costs of all robots for visiting all targets. We show that finding an optimal allocation is an NP-hard problem, even in known environments. The main contribution of this paper is PRIM ALLOCATION, a simple and fast approximate algorithm for allocating targets to robots which provably computes allocations whose total cost is at most twice as large as the optimal total cost. We then cast PRIM ALLOCATION in terms of a multi-round single-item auction where robots bid on targets, which allow for a decentralized implementation. To the best of our knowledge, PRIM ALLOCATION is the first auction-based allocation algorithm that provides a guarantee on the quality of its allocations. Our experimental results in a multi-robot simulator demonstrate that PRIM ALLOCATION is fast and results in close-to-optimal allocations despite its simplicity and decentralized nature. In particular, it needs an order of magnitude fewer bids than a computationally intensive allocation algorithm based on combinatorial auctions, yet its allocations are at least as good.

We discuss the design and implementation of an integrated media creation environment, and demonstrate its efficacy in the generation of two simple home movies. The significance for the average user seeking to create home movies lies in the flexible and automatic application of film principles to the task, removal of tedious low-level editing by means of well-formed media transformations in terms of high-level film constructs (e.g. tempo), and content repurposing powered by those same transformations added to the rich semantic information maintained at each phase of the process

This paper details the design and implementation of the (/spl alpha/, t) protocol for ad-hoc networks on Linux. The (/spl alpha/, t) protocol utilizes adaptive clustering to organize nodes into clusters in which the probability of path failure due to node movement can be bounded over time. Based on the (/spl alpha/, t) cluster scheme, routes within clusters are maintained on a proactive basis while routing between clusters is maintained on a reactive basis.

Emerging network applications require packet classification at line speed on multiple header fields. Fast packet classification requires a careful attention to memory resources due to the size and speed limitations in SRAM and DRAM memory used to implement the function. In this paper, we investigate a range of memory architectures that can be used to implement a wide range of packet classification caches. In particular, we examine their performance under real network traces in order to identify features that have the greatest impact. Through experiments, we show that a cache's associativity, replacement policy, and hash function all contribute in varying magnitudes to the cache's overall performance. Specifically, we show that small levels of associativity can result in enormous performance gains, that replacement policies can give modest performance improvements for under-provisioned caches, and that faster, less complex hashes can improve overall cache performance. ©2003 IEEE.

SWENET: The Network Community for Software engineering Education is an NSF funded project to develop curriculum modules of value to faculty member's desiring to incorporate software engineering concepts in new or existing courses. The original goal was to provide appropriate coverage at the undergraduate level for the areas defined in the Software engineering Body of Knowledge. Recently the focus has shifted to the more focused Software engineering Education Body of Knowledge developed as part of the computing Curricula - Software engineering effort. As such, SWENET is evolving to become a repository of course modules that can support a wide range of educational approaches within the general framework defined by these bodies of knowledge. © 2003 IEEE.

System on devices (SyD) is a specification for a middleware to enable heterogeneous collections of information, databases, or devices (such as hand-held devices) to collaborate with each other. This paper illustrates the advantages of SyD by describing a prototype calendar of meetings application. This application highlights some of the technical merits of SyD by exploiting the use of coordination links. Based on the underlying event-and-trigger mechanism, these links allow automatic updates as well as real-time enforcements of global constraints and interdependencies, not available with existing calendar applications. Additionally, the calendar application illustrates coordination among heterogeneous devices and databases, formation and maintenance of dynamic groups, mobility support through proxies, and performance group transactions across independent data stores. © 2003 IEEE.

System of Mobile Devices (SyD) is a middleware we developed that can he used for implementing collaborative, mobile, and distributed applications over heterogeneous devices, data stores, and computing environments. Current prototype implementation of SyD consists of five modules. These modules provide ease of programming in the areas of distributed communication, remote method invocation, service publication and discovery, directory services, distributed service invocation and aggregation, event handling, collaborative link creation and enforcement. A central module is SyDLink which allows SyD-based applications to create "coordination" links. Coordination links represent dependencies among heterogeneous devices and application components. Based on the underlying event-and-trigger mechanism, they allow automatic updates as well as real-lime enforcement of global constraints and interdependencies. SyDLink objects provide the underlying mechanism in SyD to enforce atomic execution of distributed transactions. We explain and demonstrate the use of SyDLink objects via a running example, a collaborative SyD calendar application, throughout the paper. © 2002 IEEE.
