Adaptive Input Sampling: A Novel Approach for Efficient Object Detection in High Resolution Traffic Monitoring Images

Real-time traffic monitoring is crucial for efficient transportation management, but it poses significant computational challenges, particularly when dealing with high-resolution videos. Most modern traffic monitoring systems employ object detection models followed by object tracking models, which require processing every frame of the video footage to detect and track vehicles. However, even efficient object detection models are computationally expensive, making it difficult to process high-resolution videos in real-time. To address this challenge, we introduce an Adaptive Input Sampler (AIS) as a preprocessing module that selectively activates the object detector only when vehicles are present in the scene. The AIS targets the area of the frame where vehicles are detected and samples that area without compressing the sample, thereby reducing the computational load on the object detector. By doing so, the AIS enables significant computational savings, especially when fewor no vehicles are present in the monitored scene. Our experiments demonstrate that the AIS achieves 96.40% traffic counting accuracy and 95.60% classification accuracy, while reducing the data size for analysis by up to 79.00%. AIS presents a promising solution to optimize the volume of input data in traffic monitoring applications, improve computational efficiency, and speed up inference results. © 2013 IEEE.

The implementation of titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a photocatalyst material in hydrogen (H2) evolution reaction (HER) has embarked renewed interest in the past decade. Rapid electron-hole pairs recombination and wide band gap of a photo-sensitive material of TiO2 are detrimental toward the targeted catalytical reaction. In this study, we present the rational design, fabrication, photocatalytic performance of TiO2-Cu/CuO/Cu2O heterostructures (CuTi) using viable chemical reduction method. The Z-scheme and S-scheme are succesfully generated across the TiO2/CuO/Cu2O interfaces, while the Schottky junction arises on the Cu perimeters. This is evidenced from the blue shifted about 0.3 eV of Cu 2p core level determined by using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), in combination with the formation of inverse V-shape of the Mott-Schottky plots. In addition, we find that Cu/CuO/Cu2O facilitates photon absorption range up to the visible region. The multiple heterojunction and the large number of OHsurface enhanced charge carrier transfer are associated to the suppression of photoluminescence (PL) intensity, high surface hydroxyl (OHsurface) density in CuTi probed by XPS, and fast electron transfer based on the electrochemical measurements. The presence of OHsurface inhibits the recombination of electron. A significant H2 photogeneration rate enhancement is achieved when an optimized 5 wt% Cu/CuO/Cu2O concentration is used on TiO2 to achieve 7,157.19 μmol·g−1 (1,789.30 μmol·g−1·h−1). Based on this finding, zero emission energy innitiative could be materialized under multiple heterojunctions in photocatalytic process is beneficial for enhancing the H2 production. © 2025 The Authors

In this paper we consider the estimation of unknown parameters in Bayesian inverse problems. In most cases of practical interest, there are several barriers to performing such estimation, This includes a numerical approximation of a solution of a differential equation and, even if exact solutions are available, an analytical intractability of the marginal likelihood and its associated gradient, which is used for parameter estimation. The focus of this article is to deliver unbiased estimates of the unknown parameters, that is, stochastic estimators that, in expectation, are equal to the maximizer of the marginal likelihood, and possess no numerical approximation error. Based upon the ideas of [4] we develop a new approach for unbiased parameter estimation for Bayesian inverse problems. We prove unbiasedness and establish numerically that the associated estimation procedure is faster than the current state-of-the-art methodology for this problem. We demonstrate the performance of our methodology on a range of problems which include a PDE and ODE. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) models have shown promise in drug response prediction (DRP), yet their ability to generalize across datasets remains an open question, raising concerns about their real-world applicability. Due to the lack of standardized benchmarking approaches, model evaluations and comparisons often rely on inconsistent datasets and evaluation criteria, making it difficult to assess true predictive capabilities. In this work, we introduce a benchmarking framework for evaluating cross-dataset prediction generalization in DRP models. Our framework incorporates five publicly available drug screening datasets, six standardized DRP models, and a scalable workflow for systematic evaluation. To assess model generalization, we introduce a set of evaluation metrics that quantify both absolute performance (e.g., predictive accuracy across datasets) and relative performance (e.g., performance drop compared to within-dataset results), enabling a more comprehensive assessment of model transferability. Our results reveal substantial performance drops when models are tested on unseen datasets, underscoring the importance of rigorous generalization assessments. While several models demonstrate relatively strong cross-dataset generalization, no single model consistently outperforms across all datasets. Furthermore, we identify CTRPv2 as the most effective source dataset for training, yielding higher generalization scores across target datasets. By sharing this standardized evaluation framework with the community, our study aims to establish a rigorous foundation for model comparison, and accelerate the development of robust DRP models for real-world applications. © 2025, CC BY.

A workow is presented for using PDE-based models to simulate an experimental setup for inferring properties associated with carbon nitridation. The eventual goal is the statistical calibration of the parameters associated with the active nitridation of graphite carbon;this work is a stepping stone in this direction. Simple catalycity models are used to illustrate the the calibration workow. This study builds from previous work where it was determined that a one-dimensional model used was inadequate to represent the physical mechanisms at work. The experimental work is briey recapitulated and the mathematical model used for data reduction is presented. Details of the statistical calibration procedure and all assumptions are discussed. Results of the calibration procedure for the simple catalytic model will be presented and discussed. Background: Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the commonest subtype of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. In the United States, prior studies reported that African Americans (AA) with MF had poor outcomes. data characterizing differences in racial disparity outcomes over time are limited. Patients and Methods: We collected data from the United States Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database to investigate the survival patterns of patients with MF from 1988 to 2011. Cases were divided into 3 cohorts based on the year of diagnosis. Univariable and multivariable analysis were conducted to assess for factors associated with overall survival (OS). Results: 2896 cases of MF were detected, with a median follow-up duration of 60 months. The disparity in survival between the years 1988-1995 and 2004-2011 was significant (P =.05). The parameter estimates of the Cox proportional hazards model for the 1988-1995 period (using the 2004-2011 period as a reference) was also significant (P =.024). Patients diagnosed between 1988 and 1995 were 1.4 times more likely to die from the disease than those diagnosed between 2004 and 2011. The survival gap between AA and white patients narrowed in 1996-2003 and 2004-2011 in comparison to 1988-1995. This indicates improvements in the survival of AA patients over time. Conversely, the survival rates of white patients remained relatively stable over time. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates that AA with MF have reduced survival. Despite the persistent pattern of lower survival across all periods, the gap in survival between white and AA seems to be narrowing over time. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.

A multi-layered defense against adversarial attacks in brain tumor classification using ensemble adversarial training and feature squeezing

Deep learning, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), has proven valuable for brain tumor classification, aiding diagnostic and therapeutic decisions in medical imaging. Despite their accuracy, these models are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, compromising their reliability in clinical settings. In this research, we utilized a VGG16-based CNN model to classify brain tumors, achieving 96% accuracy on clean magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. To assess robustness, we exposed the model to Fast Gradient Sign Method (FGSM) and Projected Gradient Descent (PGD) attacks, which reduced accuracy to 32% and 13%, respectively. We then applied a multi-layered defense strategy, including adversarial training with FGSM and PGD examples and feature squeezing techniques such as bit-depth reduction and Gaussian blurring. This approach improved model resilience, achieving 54% accuracy on FGSM and 47% on PGD adversarial examples. Our results highlight the importance of proactive defense strategies for maintaining the reliability of AI in medical imaging under adversarial conditions.

This paper describes a flexible C++ software framework, called GRINS, for simulating complex multiphysics systems of partial differential equations using the finite element method. GRINS is designed to facilitate the rapid development and reuse of finite element formulation code as well as other features of complex simulations, including quantity-of-interest functionals, solvers, boundary conditions, initial conditions, and postprocessing. GRINS is built on the FEMSystem framework that is part of the libMesh finite element library. GRINS, through FEMSystem and libMesh, supports a number of contemporary algorithms and computing features including hybrid distributed and shared memory parallelism, parallel adaptive mesh refinement on unstructured grids, goal-oriented refinement driven by dual-weighted residual error estimates in quantities of interest, and adjoint-based parameter sensitivities. GRINS is deployed both as an application binary, allowing immediate use of existing features, and as a library to which the user may build and link a stand-alone application, extending the framework to their needs. Several examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the design, including uncertainty quantification applications. Using electronic health records (EHR) data for predicting the condition of patients who are in need of emergency care is a promising application of machine learning. With the help of machine learning, complex problems of identification of patterns can be solved with ease and accuracy when proper machine learning model is implemented. This paper uses EHR data to build an end-to-end machine learning pipeline for predicting the outcome of emergency care patients. As a machine learning process, the pipeline includes data preprocessing, feature engineering, model selection, data set training and testing, evaluation, and deployment. By using EHR data in this pipeline, the model has been trained and tested on a large dataset of many patients information with different types of machine learning algorithms to improve and get the best prediction accuracy. This pipeline can aid in managing primary care patients efficiently and effectively with the implementation of best suitable machine learning algorithm at the time of urgency. By implementing the model on the EHR dataset, an accuracy of more than 75\% is obtained which indicates the efficiency of the machine learning process in the process of identifying patients who need the emergency care more than the general patients when taken to the primary care or emergency. © 2023 IEEE.
