We consider identification of sparse linear systems with a mix of static and time-varying parameters. Such systems are typical in underwater acoustics, for instance, in applications requiring identification of the acoustic channel, such as underwater acoustic communications, navigation and continuous-wave sonar. The recently proposed fast local basis function (fLBF) algorithm provides high performance when identifying time-varying systems. In this paper, we further improve the performance of the fLBF algorithm by exploiting properties of the system. Specifically, we propose an adaptive time-invariance test to identify whether a particular system tap is static or time-varying and exploit this knowledge for choosing the number of basis functions. We also propose a regularization scheme that exploits the system sparsity and an adaptive technique for estimating the regularization parameter. Finally, a debiasing technique is proposed to reduce an inherent bias of fLBF estimates. The high performance of the fLBF algorithm with the proposed techniques is demonstrated in scenarios of underwater acoustic communications, using numerical and real experiments. © 2022, The Authors. The paper describes a period/frequency adaptation mechanism applied to an active noise control scheme designed to attenuate disturbances with high autocorrelation characteristics. The proposed modification tracks slowly varying changes in the noise autocorrelation function peak. Moreover, it can switch between different algorithm settings when an abrupt change in noise characteristics is detected. This modification increases the method’s robustness and the area of potential implementations. The algorithm’s behavior and performance are verified with computer simulations using real-world signals and acoustic path models identified experimentally. The results confirm that the previously proposed ANC algorithm can be extended with the period tracking mechanism using little additional computational resources and without apparent degradation in attenuation or stability.

Automation of ship maneuvering in limited sailing conditions usually requires 100% redundancy of thrusters (THRs) of various modifications and their locations in accordance with the matrix. The hierarchy of the motion control system is branched by levels using high-level motion controllers and THRs control distribution algorithms, which allows for a modular design with software, where the high-level controller (HLC) can be designed without comprehensive information about the thruster motors, and the input signal branching and speed limits are handled by the motion controller. But, for certain THRs configurations, this branching leads to the decrease in control efficiency due to the limitation of data on the physical characteristics of the ships and the operation of the motion controller. This research examines different approaches to improving control efficiency using methods of nonlinear predictive control models as a basis for developing motion controllers with decision optimization based on relevant constraints. The implemented branched system is the result of solving two simple problems of ship's motion, which highlight the related problems. The use of different approaches to eliminate the identified shortcomings made it possible to develop the nonlinear controller that combines the motion controller with distributed control of the THRs and ensuring the certain level of system reliability. The modularity of the control system is provided by the expansion of the closed system, which made it possible to achieve an increase in efficiency during the combined mode of operation. The obtained solution of nonlinear control with time-varying constraints made it possible to increase the accuracy of the control with a decrease in the duration of the pause in response to the change of the disturbance within 10 % .

Currently, the use of cyber-physical systems is becoming widespread in various fields, primarily, because they enable many innovative functionalities through their networking. These systems include complex computation elements that interacts with the physical environment through sensors or actuators. Their solutions are based on sharing of hardware equipment and software services, targeting to provide added value proposition for various customers. The research and development in this domain are going on not only in the technical direction, but is also targeting the value creation for customers, in a technical and business-oriented manner. This paper presents a cyber-physical systems-based business model realized through services composition. The service composition framework integrates Web services which can be interconnected and can be accessed by mobile clients through smartphones, on mobile and wireless communications channels. The response time for multiuser requests for services access is evaluated, because it is an important quality of service performance criteria of our e-business model service composition framework. The results are promising.

This article describes in detail the implementation of an automated parking house model based on ATmega2560 microcontroller that enables simple and efficient parking of cars in precisely determined positions. Described model offers to user convenient parking of the car model. In addition to the automated parking system, the system provides several additional functions realized by displacement sensors and smoke sensors. One of the goals of this paper is to eliminate potentially dangerous situations and collisions during parking and thereby increase safety in this area. The garage house model is not designed solely for parking purposes but also as a practical teaching tool in the field of sensors and actuators. It is precisely in this area that students can expand their skills in designing and implementing programs that can enable all the functions of the garage house - temperature and smoke detection, precise positioning of the platform through stepper motors, display outputs, and more. At the same time, they will learn teamwork, where the functionality of the garage house is divided into multiple parts, and individual teams of students must collaborate to successfully solve and create a fully functional garage house software.

This paper introduces a new variational Gaussian filtering approach for estimating the state of a nonlinear dynamic system. We first assume that the predictive distribution of the state is Gaussian and derive an iterative method for updating the state posterior in the natural parameter space through KullbackLeibler divergence minimization. The obtained update rule is the same as that of the conjugate-computation variational inference technique in Bayesian learning. The derivation here is simpler and more insightful. We then impose a Wishart prior on the inverse of the state prediction covariance to take into account the impact of approximating the state predictive distribution using a Gaussian density on the state posterior estimation. The prediction covariance is identified jointly with the state using variational inference and the established state posterior update rule to achieve the desired Gaussian filtering. Simulation study examines the performance of the proposed filtering framework in target tracking based on bearing and range measurements.

The increasing prevalence of smart building architectures, driven by the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and automation systems, has led to a surge in energy consumption. This research explores the application of swarm intelligence techniques as an innovative approach to optimize neural networks, aiming to strike a balance between maintaining the desired performance levels and minimizing energy consumption. The study investigates the integration of swarm-based optimization algorithms, such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) into the training and operation of neural networks. These algorithms enable the networks to dynamically adapt and optimize their parameters in response to changing environmental conditions and user requirements. The research focuses on developing a comprehensive framework that considers the specific challenges posed by smart building architectures, including real-time data processing, sensor integration, and adaptive control. The proposed approach aims to achieve optimal neural network configurations that minimize energy consumption while ensuring reliable and responsive operation of smart building systems. The results demonstrate the potential of swarm intelligence to significantly improve the energy efficiency of neural network-enabled smart building architectures, providing a promising avenue for sustainable and intelligent infrastructure. The proposed model has an accuracy of 98.23% which is 7.64% higher than that of the traditional approaches.

The aim of the paper is to present a design cycle regarding to the construction of an unmanned cargo aircraft with own weight up to 25 kg, operating range of up to 100 km and AGL operating ceiling of up to 1 km. The task of the project team was to plan the design cycle, perform analytical calculations and CFD simulations, and finally to build an unmanned aircraft capable of lifting cargo. At the same time, a number of assumptions and technical regulations regarding constructions had to be met, which are specified in legal regulations regarding the given class of unmanned aerial vehicles. In order to achieve optimal UAV aerodynamic properties, including maximization of the payload while minimizing the own weight, aerodynamic calculations and CFD simulations were performed. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In this paper, we present a distributed version of the k-means algorithm for multi-agent systems with directed communication links. The goal of k-means is to partition the network’s agents in mutually exclusive sets (groups) such that agents in the same set have (and possibly share) similar information and are able to calculate a representative value for their group. Our distributed algorithm allows each node to transmit quantized values in an event-driven fashion, and exhibits distributed stopping capabilities. Transmitting quantized values leads to more efficient usage of the available bandwidth and reduces the communication bottleneck, whereas distributed stopping preserves available resources. We characterize the properties of the proposed distributed algorithm and show that its execution (on any static and strongly connected digraph) will partition all agents in mutually exclusive clusters in finite time. We conclude with examples that illustrate the operation, performance, and potential advantages of the proposed algorithm.

Learning from demonstrations for autonomous soft-tissue retraction

The current research focus in Robot-Assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery (RAMIS) is directed towards increasing the level of robot autonomy, to place surgeons in a supervisory position. Although Learning from Demonstrations (LfD) approaches are among the preferred ways for an autonomous surgical system to learn expert gestures, they require a high number of demonstrations and show poor generalization to the variable conditions of the surgical environment. In this work, we propose an LfD methodology based on Generative Adversarial Imitation Learning (GAIL) that is built on a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) setting. GAIL combines generative adversarial networks to learn the distribution of expert trajectories with a DRL setting to ensure generalisation of trajectories providing human-like behaviour. We consider automation of tissue retraction, a common RAMIS task that involves soft tissues manipulation to expose a region of interest. In our proposed methodology, a small set of expert trajectories can be acquired through the da Vinci Research Kit (dVRK) and used to train the proposed LfD method inside a simulated environment. Results indicate that our methodology can accomplish the tissue retraction task with human-like behaviour while being more sample-efficient than the baseline DRL method. Towards the end, we show that the learnt policies can be successfully transferred to the real robotic platform and deployed for soft tissue retraction on a synthetic phantom. © 2021, CC BY.
