The ability to achieve coordinated behavior-engineered or emergent-on networked systems has attracted widespread interest over several fields. This interest has led to remarkable advances in developing a theoretical understanding of the conditions under which agents within a network can reach an agreement (consensus) or develop coordinated behavior, such as synchronization. However, much less understood is the phenomenon of network coherence. Network coherence generally refers to nodes' ability in a network to have a similar dynamic response despite heterogeneity in their individual behavior. In this paper, we develop a general framework to analyze and quantify the level of network coherence that a system exhibits by relating coherence with a low-rank property of the system. More precisely, for a networked system with linear dynamics and coupling, we show that, as the network connectivity grows, the system transfer matrix converges to a rank-one transfer matrix representing the coherent behavior. Interestingly, the non-zero eigenvalue of such a rank-one matrix is given by the harmonic mean of individual nodal dynamics, and we refer to it as the coherent dynamics. Our analysis unveils the frequency-dependent nature of coherence and a non-trivial interplay between dynamics and network topology. We further show that many networked systems can exhibit similar coherent behavior by establishing a concentration result in a setting with randomly chosen individual nodal dynamics. The paper presents research focused on decision reducts, a feature reduction mechanism inherent to rough sets theory. As a reduct enables to protect the discriminative properties of attributes with respect to described concepts, from the point of data representation, a reduct length is considered to be the most important measure of its quality. However, such approach is insufficient while taking into account the performance of a reduct-based rule classifier applied to test samples. When many reducts of the same length are available, they can lead to vastly different predictions. The paper provides a description for the proposed procedure for iterative reduct generation, which results in decrease of diversity in the observed levels of accuracy, supporting reduct selection. The procedure was applied for binary classification with balanced classes, for the stylometric task of authorship attribution. © 2020 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

control systems can show robustness to many events, like disturbances and model inaccuracies. It is natural to speculate that they are also robust to sporadic deadline misses when implemented as digital tasks on an embedded platform. This paper proposes a comprehensive stability analysis for control systems subject to deadline misses, leveraging a new formulation to describe the patterns experienced by the control task under different handling strategies. Such analysis brings the assessment of control systems robustness to computational problems one step closer to the controller implementation. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

TextBenDS: A generic textual data benchmark for distributed systems

Extracting top-k keywords and documents using weighting schemes are popular techniques employed in text mining and machine learning for different analysis and retrieval tasks. The weights are usually computed in the data preprocessing step, as they are costly to update and keep track of all the modifications performed on the dataset. Furthermore, computation errors are introduced when analyzing only subsets of the dataset. Therefore, in a Big Data context, it is crucial to lower the runtime of computing weighting schemes, without hindering the analysis process and the accuracy of the machine learning algorithms. To address this requirement for the task of top-k keywords and documents, it is customary to design benchmarks that compare weighting schemes within various configurations of distributed frameworks and database management systems. Thus, we propose a generic document-oriented benchmark for storing textual data and constructing weighting schemes (TextBenDS). Our benchmark offers a generic data model designed with a multidimensional approach for storing text documents. We also propose using aggregation queries with various complexities and selectivities for constructing term weighting schemes, that are utilized in extracting top-k keywords and documents. We evaluate the computing performance of the queries on several distributed environments set within the Apache Hadoop ecosystem. Our experimental results provide interesting insights. As an example, MongoDB proves to have the best overall performance, while Spark's execution time remains almost the same, regardless of the weighting schemes. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Pyrolysis is a prominent technique to harvest energy while addressing the global waste problem. Product yield relies heavily on precise reactor temperature control in a pyrolysis process;thus, a representative mathematical model is necessary to design and evaluate the control system. Hence, this research aims to create a data-driven model of a 1 kg/h Auger-based pyrolysis (APR) plant and design a robust controller accordingly. The system is excited by using a pseudo-random binary signal (PRBS) to trigger process response and is recorded for 2 hours. Various models with different orders, such as Auto Regressive Exogeneous (ARX), Auto Regressive Moving Average Exogeneous (ARMAX), Box-Jenkins (BJ), and Output Error (OE) were created from the obtained data. The models were examined using best-fit percentage, final prediction error (FPE) and mean square error (MSE) criteria and validated using cross-correlation and auto-correlation functions. Two widely used and purpose-fit controllers, Proportional-Integral-Derivate (PID) and Model Predictive control (MPC), with output constraints, were designed and tuned for this application. Several operational scenarios were investigated, such as setpoint tracking and disturbance rejection. The best-fit models were selected and validated for TIC-3, TIC-4 and TIC-5, with 96.22%, 97.4% and 84.83% fitness criteria, respectively. Both controllers successfully satisfied all the tests with less than 2% steady-state error. However, MPC surpassed PID controllers in all aspects, such as 5-7 times faster settling time, negligible overshoot, and reduced integral absolute error (IAE) and integral square error (ISE) up to 44.75% and 5.45%, respectively. Nevertheless, MPC with input and output constraints performance pales compared to other controllers despite some adjustments with massive ISE and settling time above 3000 seconds. As a result, a recommendation to change the input actuator will be beneficial to unleash the benefit of MPC fully. © 2

This paper presents a distributed control strategy for a multi-agent system commanded by a set of leaders that has to accomplish a high-level plan consisting of a sequence of tasks specified by a state-space region and a timed constraint. The agents are also subject to relative-distance constraints with its neighbors. The solution consists in an adaptive distributed mechanism to update the feedback gains for the leader agents, which is executed following a self-triggered algorithm. The results show how the proposed approach provides less conservative results than if feedback gains are held constant, and are illustrated with a simulation example.

The paper is dedicated to the area of feature selection, in particular a notion of attribute rankings that allow to estimate importance of variables. In the research presented for ranking construction a new weighting factor was defined, based on relative reducts. A reduct constitutes an embedded mechanism of feature selection, specific to rough set theory. The proposed factor takes into account the number of reducts in which a given attribute exists, as well as lengths of reducts. Two approaches for reduct generation were employed and compared, with search executed by a genetic algorithm. To validate the usefulness of the reduct-based rankings in the process of feature reduction, for gradually decreasing subsets of attributes, selected through rankings, sets of decision rules were induced in classical rough set approach. The performance of all rule classifiers was evaluated, and experimental results showed that the proposed rankings led to at least the same, or even increased classification accuracy for reduced sets of features than in the case of operating on the entire set of condition attributes. The experiments were performed on datasets from stylometry domain, with treating authorship attribution as a classification task, and stylometric descriptors as characteristic features defining writing styles. © 2020 The Authors. The paper describes few faults that can be present in Photovoltaic modules and presents results related to training and the testing of a mobile application designed for identifying faults in photovoltaic modules based on thermal images. The mobile application was trained and then tested with different individual and multiple faults. The mobile application can identify with high accuracy both the individual and multiple faults if the thermal images are preprocessed before to be uploaded for analysis.

The paper summarises research on application of RLS-based adaptive control algorithms for single-channel active noise control (ANC) system, used to create three dimensional (3D) local zones of quiet in a reverberant enclosure by attenuation of tonal disturbances. Three different ANC system structures are concerned: classical and modified 'filtered-x' and 'adjoint' structure. The problem of parameterisation of six RLS-based adaptive control algorithms is evaluated, firstly, in simulations with the use of nonsimplified plant models and tonal disturbances. Next, research results are proved in real-world experiments. Distributed formation maneuver control by manipulating the complex Laplacian

This paper proposes a novel maneuvering technique for the complex-Laplacian-based formation control. We show how to modify the original weights that build the Laplacian such that a designed steady-state motion of the desired shape emerges from the local interactions among the agents. These collective motions can be exploited to solve problems such as the shaped consensus (the rendezvous with a particular shape), the enclosing of a target, or translations with controlled speed and heading to assist mobile robots in area coverage, escorting, and traveling missions, respectively. The designed steady-state collective motions correspond to rotations around the centroid, translations, and scalings of a reference shape. The proposed modification of the weights relocates one of the Laplacian's zero eigenvalues while preserving its associated eigenvector that constructs the desired shape. For example, such relocation on the imaginary or real axis induces rotational and scaling motions, respectively. We will show how to satisfy a sufficient condition to guarantee the global convergence to the desired shape and motions. Finally, we provide simulations and comparisons with other maneuvering techniques. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.
