Machine learning-based Intrusion detection (ML-IDS) gained a lot of interest from the research community as security threats facing the IoT are on the rise. Researchers focused on improving intrusion detection efficiency based on machine learning. However, the feasibility of applying proposed ML algorithms to resource limited IoT devices limited. We present a proof of concepts (POC) for ML-IDS for IoT edge device using actual devices. Furthermore, we envisage the lack of virtual environments that mimics the realistic IoT world, puts research completeness on bay. In this paper, we extend the benchmarks of intrusion detection, applied to IoT edge devices of a varying of computing resources. The benchmarks are based on machine learning techniques endorsed by the research community, and adopt popular intrusion datasets for training and testing models. We also utilize the benchmarks to calibrate Virtual-box environment in a novel way to produce virtual machines that closely mimic realistic IoT edge devices. Thus accurate virtualization would become a reliable tool available to researchers to test their approaches. © 2024 IEEE.

An efficient cloud based face recognition system for e-health secured login using steerable pyramid transform and local directional pattern

This paper proposes a face recognition system based on steerable pyramid transform (SPT) and local directional pattern (LDP) for e-health secured login in cloud domain. In an e-health login, patients periodically forget their self-made login username and password. This face recognition system can replace the traditional login system. In the proposed system, SPT can decompose a face image into several sub-bands of different scales and orientations, and LDP can encode the sub-bands in binary texture pattern. The LDP binary pattern was obtained by computing the edge response values in all eight directions at each pixel position and generating a code from the relative strength magnitude. Therefore, SPT–LDP design represents a face image in a robust way which includes multiple information sources from different scales and orientations. The proposed system is tested on standard benchmark facial recognition technology (FERET) and extended Yale-B databases. Further, the efficiency of the proposed system is proved by comparing recognition rates with other existing descriptor based methods. From the experimental results it is observed that the proposed system achieves 99.79% recognition in fb set, 90.72% in fc set, 84.97% in dup I set, and 87.69% in dup II set for FERET database and 100% in sub2 set, 100% in sub3 set, 96% in sub4 set and 95% in sub5 set for extended Yale-B database which is better than the existing methods. © Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2018.

A novel, planar and reflection-less lens antenna for automotive radar band (77-81 GHz) based on miniaturized-element frequency selective surfaces is designed, fabricated, and tested. This lens is designed to provide a narrow beam (2.53°) and high gain (35.6 dBi) while showing a very low reflection coefficient (-28 dB at resonance) measured at its feed. This lens is a key component in the future automotive radar-on-chip applications. The phase compensation for the lens is accomplished locally with phase delays through distributed 2-pole spatial filters that make use of only shunt elements. This lens includes three MEFSS-gold patterned layers and two layers of fused silica substrate. The lens is developed using microfabrication technology with feature size accuracy at the order of 0.1 μm, and has an F/D = 1.4 and is fed by a dual-polarized horn antenna. The fabricated 10-cm lens is only 1.05 mm thick and weighs 19 g and shows much improvement in the reflection coefficient from 77-81 GHz when compared with a typical dielectric lens of the same diameter and F/D. © 2024 IEEE. This paper deals with the simulation calculation of transmission (S21) and reflection (S22) parameters in a material parametrically based on clay (brick). The electromagnetic parameters of the clay that are the subject of the study are: relative permittivity Εr, loss tangent tan δ and electrical conductivity σ, while the only structural parameter is the thickness d of the sample. The values of all considered parameters are within the range of data from available literature and values that could occur due to external causes (e. g. an increase in clay moisture leads to an increase in electrical conductivity). The simulation model was carried out with the software tool ANSYS HFSS and validated with a laboratory measurement model. The laboratory model consists of a circular waveguide with an inner diameter of 150 mm and a total length of 700 mm, which is excited by 52 mm long probes placed 50 mm from the last wall of the waveguide. The lower cut-off frequency of this measurement system is 1.173 GHz, so all results (simulation and measurement) are limited by this lower cut-off frequency of the waveguide. All simulation calculations were performed for three clay sample thicknesses: 18 mm, 36 mm and 54 mm. These calculations were made with the aim of determining brick composites that have high attenuation of electromagnetic EM waves (low transmission parameter and high reflection parameter) in order to reduce the strength of EM fields inside the object made of such bricks. Accurately assessing power transformers' health condition and calculating their probability of failure (PoF) can facilitate decision-making with respect to the operation and maintenance of transformers. Among various data and information used for transformer condition assessment and PoF calculation, the Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) plays a key role in diagnosing transformer incipient faults. In this paper, we have developed a deep learning-based model to improves the effectiveness of DGA interpretation for transformer condition assessment. Then, the refined DGA results are used alongside other transformer measurement data to support the PoF calculation and risk cost analysis. The method developed in this paper has been validated using the dataset collected from numerous in-service power transformers. © 2024 IEEE.

This tertiary systematic literature review examines 29 systematic literature reviews and surveys in Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) to uncover trends, limitations, and future directions. The study explores current explanation techniques, providing insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers interested in enhancing AI transparency. Notably, the increasing number of systematic literature reviews (SLRs) in XAI publications indicates a growing interest in the field. The review offers an annotated catalogue for human-computer interaction-focused XAI stakeholders, emphasising practitioner guidelines. Automated searches across ACM, IEEE, and science Direct databases identified SLRs published between 2019 and May 2023, covering diverse application domains and topics. While adhering to methodological guidelines, the SLRs often lack primary study quality assessments. The review highlights ongoing challenges and future opportunities related to XAI evaluation standardisation, its impact on users, and interdisciplinary research on ethics and GDPR aspects. The 29 SLRs, analysing over two thousand papers, include five directly relevant to practitioners. Additionally, references from the SLRs were analysed to compile a list of frequently cited papers, serving as recommended foundational readings for newcomers to the field. © 2024 IEEE.

Despite impressive milestones achieved by generative models such as Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) in synthesizing faces, maintaining face identity remains a major challenge for most face recognition system. In this paper, we propose a Self-supervised Face Frontalization GAN (SF-GAN), which produces a frontal face image from a profile image. We designed a profile method to preserve identity information and fine details in high-resolution that focus on pose feature space, which helps SF-GAN reconstruct high-frequency face texture details. SF-GAN switches key facial regions between the input image and its reconstructed version to produce more realistic images. Furthermore, we introduce an orthogonal constraint to our generator that penalizes redundant latent representations, resulting in a more diverse pose appearance details. While the discriminator is designed with a mechanism of facial awareness for each facial region to improve overall model performance. FaceNet and MTCNN are then used to extract correlated face features in order to determine the accuracy of face recognition. Our evaluations are based on the Multi-PIE and CAS-PEAL datasets. Results showed that SF-GAN achieved a better face quality visualization and rank-1 face identification. © 2024 IEEE.

Inductive wireless power transfer (WPT) system uses alternating magnetic field to transmit power from the transmitter to the receiver. To confine the magnetic field, WPT coils are realized with high permeability substrate material that ensures shielding. Aside from shielding, high permeability substrate also increases the coil inductance. When transmitter and receiver coils are placed in close proximity, high permeability substrate of transmitter coil increases the inductance of the receiver coil, and vice versa. This additional inductance increase is a function of the substrate material type and the distance between the coils. To achieve high efficiency and low losses of the WPT system, a capacitor network is added to both transmitter and receiver coil. In a common serial-serial (S-S) WPT system topology, the capacitor networks are asymmetric, i.e. the capacitor network of the transmitter and the receiver are not identical. The efficiency of asymmetric S-S topology is significantly impaired due to variable coil inductance. To attain high efficiency in such operating conditions, this paper proposes symmetric S-S WPT topology with emphasis on transmission distance optimization. © 2024 IEEE.

Software aging is the gradual decline in performance that occurs with continuous software operation. As the demands on software systems increase, assessing the risk of software aging becomes crucial, especially in modern systems requiring high availability, such as blockchain platforms. Herein, we quantitatively evaluated the risk of software aging in Hyperledger Fabric, a permissioned blockchain. We subjected Hyperledger Fabric to various loads in an experimental environment and monitored memory and CPU usage fluctuations. Through statistical tests - including the Mann-Kendall test, modified Cox-Stuart test, and Sen's slope estimation - we identified the risk of software aging in terms of memory and CPU usage across all peers. © 2024 IEEE.
