Dispenser cathode is used in microwave tubes as source of electrons. We investigate high current density emission capabilities of alloy-coated cathodes used for terahertz vacuum devices. In this paper the developmental work carried out on ternary-alloy-film cathode (2Os:2Re:1W) and the results are presented. The cathodes were tested inside a closed spaced diode and also analytical chamber containing Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), Thermionic Emission Microscope (THEM) facility. Emission current densities measured in the diode structure at 1300° K temperature were above 60 A/cm2. The work function was found 1.72 eV using 73% slope method. To ensure the life of the cathode accelerated life test has been carried out in closed spaced diode at 1300° K temperature. © 2011 IEEE.

The objective of the Virtual Laboratory for the Disabled is to create a realistic, real-time, electrical engineering virtual laboratory. This project targets individuals who do not have adequate mobility of their upper bodies to perform laboratory experiments. To provide a more realistic and enhanced learning experience, the users of the virtual laboratory are allowed the freedom to build and test a wide variety of realistic electrical circuits, and be able to perform curriculum-based experiments. The main goal is to create an environment similar to a real electrical engineering laboratory, and to offer the user a way to learn the different aspects of instrumentation and circuitry.

This paper presents an intelligent circuit analysis module that is capable of analyzing electrical circuits and determining equivalence. We discuss the module in context of a National Science Foundation funded project - universal virtual laboratory (UVL). UVL is a virtual electrical engineering laboratory for able and disabled individuals to construct, simulate and understand the characteristics of basic electrical circuits. This paper discusses the development of an intelligent circuit analysis module called the circuit recognizer (CR). The CR is a program that has knowledge of circuit theory concepts, and is capable of using this knowledge to provide assistance to a student while he/she is performing the experiments in UVL. While verifying circuit configuration it identifies errors and provides explanations that guide the student to a better understanding of the experiment. The ultimate objective of the CR is to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching strategies employed within the UVL as well as to enhance the learning abilities of students

In this paper we present our work and results in the framework of obstacle avoiding for marine vehicle teams by means of trajectory planning. Based on a team of maritime systems, such as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) or Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs), which are intended to perform a preplanned mission in a given formation topology, methods for trajectory planning are investigated which guarantee for both obstacle-free paths and formation preservation. The proposed solution contains advanced graph search and trajectory smoothing to generate executable path for the vehicles. © 2010 IFAC.

The advantage of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided surgery, in which MR images taken during surgery are used to guide the surgery, has been recognized recently. However, there is a problem, due to long imaging time of MRI, that it is difficult to capture the respiratory organ motion. It is often a constraint that the patient must hold his or her breath, especially in the treatment of the abdominal region. Consequently, this paper proposes a method of eliminating this constraint in MRI-guided surgery by real-time monitoring of the movement of the organ involved in the surgery by means of the signal derived from MRI. Specifically, the navigator echo is extracted in imaging during surgery. The movement of the organ involved in surgery is detected on the basis of the change in the calculated projection profile, and the results are presented to the surgeon. In this study, the procedure is built into a 1.5-T clinical MRI system. The feasibility of the proposed system was examined under clinical conditions by evaluating its accuracy and delay in a phantom experiment, and also in an in vivo experiment on the liver of a volunteer. The results are reported in this paper. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

His interests include application of computers to all aspects of engineering with particular emphasis on utilization of small computers. Mr. Calvert is a licensed professional engineer in Maryland. He received a BSEE from Drexel University in 1969 and since that time has completed a number of graduate courses related to machinery acoustics. Francisco A. Rodriguez:is an engineer with the Propulsion and Auxiliary Systems Department David Taylor Research Center. He was formerly with the Computer-Aided Design/Interactive Graphics Group of the Division of Engineering and Weapons U.S. Naval Academy. His interests include interfacing the computer aided design to the computer aided manufacturing along with related software and hardware development. Mr. Rodriguez received a BSEEfrom the University of Virginia in 1968. James S. Slebzak:is a mechanical engineering technician with the Propulsion and Auxiliary Systems Department David Taylor Research Center. He received his machinists papers in 1971 after serving his apprenticeship at David Taylor Research Center. He continued his education and became the senior numerical control programmer at the Annapolis Laboratory. He completed his mechanical technology degree from Anne Arundel Community College in 1986. His interests are in the application of numerically controlled manufacturing techniques to prototype machinery components.

The machine shop at the Annapolis Laboratory of the David Taylor Research center (DTRC) provides model making and prototype support to a large variety of naval ship related engineering projects. In order to meet these challenging requirements, computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) techniques are being used to produce one of a kind prototypes or very low volume production parts. The use of computer aides in these cases is to facilitate the accurate manufacture of a difficult part, rather than to improve manufacturing efficiencies. In addition, the approach provides the flexibility required to support research and development projects. Several examples of prototype shipboard components manufactured using CAD/CAM techniques are presented in this paper. The hardware and software that facilitated these projects are discussed. The examples described have met the requirements to produce a wide variety of prototype shipboard machinery components quickly and accurately.

A multimode theory of resonant backward wave oscillator with inclined electron beam Clinotron is introduced. The mechanism of the efficiency enhancement due to mode interaction is unveiled through numerical simulation.
