computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT), aiming to provide personalized tests for each examinee, is an emerging task in the intelligent education field. A CAT system selects questions step by step according to the knowledge states of each examinee, which are estimated by Cognitive Diagnosis Models (CDM). Most existing methods depend on the performance of a single CDM, which is often unstable. Besides, they may select similar questions to generate a test, which to some extent ignores the diversity of selected questions. To this end, in this paper, we propose a novel framework, namely Ensembled computerized Adaptive Testing (EnCAT). Specifically, EnCAT comprises two components, ensemble part and explore part. In the ensemble part, we ensemble multiple CDMs to determine whether a question is informative, which ensures the stability of CAT process. Then, in the explore part, we learn the question representation from the question content and design a mechanism to quantify the similarity of different questions, which avoids the selection of similar questions and is free of expensive human labeling. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted on a real-world dataset, where the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed EnCAT framework with good performance. © 2021 IEEE.

Sequence-to-Action: Grammatical Error Correction with Action Guided Sequence Generation

The task of Grammatical Error Correction (GEC) has received remarkable attention with wide applications in Natural Language Processing (NLP) in recent years. While one of the key principles of GEC is to keep the correct parts unchanged and avoid over-correction, previous sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) models generate results from scratch, which are not guaranteed to follow the original sentence structure and may suffer from the over-correction problem. In the meantime, the recently proposed sequence tagging models can overcome the over-correction problem by only generating edit operations, but are conditioned on human designed language-specific tagging labels. In this paper, we combine the pros and alleviate the cons of both models by proposing a novel Sequence-to-Action (S2A) module. The S2A module jointly takes the source and target sentences as input, and is able to automatically generate a token-level action sequence before predicting each token, where each action is generated from three choices named SKIP, COPY and GENerate. Then the actions are fused with the basic seq2seq framework to provide final predictions. We conduct experiments on the benchmark datasets of both English and Chinese GEC tasks. Our model consistently outperforms the seq2seq baselines, while being able to significantly alleviate the over-correction problem as well as holding better generality and diversity in the generation results compared to the sequence tagging models. © 2022, CC BY.

This paper introduces the Temporal Transform Network based on Scale Sequences (TTS) for cloth-changing person re-identification in video datasets. The TTS network is designed to capture multi-scale temporal cues within video sequences. It accomplishes this by initially modeling short-term temporal cues between adjacent frames, followed by capturing long-term relationships between non-consecutive frames. In more detail, short-term temporal cues are modeled through parallel inflated convolutions with different time dilation rates, enabling the representation of pedestrian movement and appearance dynamics. Long-term relationships are effectively captured using a temporal self-attention model, mitigating challenges such as occlusion and noise within the video sequence. The TTS network outperforms existing methods across cloth-changing video ReID datasets such as CCVID. For instance, under general settings, our approach exhibits a 1.1% improvement in top-1 accuracy and a corresponding 1.1% increase in mAP compared to the baseline. In cloth-changing settings, we observe a 0.2% enhancement in top-1 accuracy and a notable 1.3% increase in mAP relative to the baseline.

In recent years, oriented object detection technology has made significant progress. Most oriented object detectors represent oriented bounding boxes by adding additional angle information to the horizontal bounding box representation, which leads to serious angle periodicity issues. To address these issues, this paper proposes double midpoint vectors (DMvectors) to represent oriented objects. For any oriented bounding box, we align the center point with the origin in the Cartesian coordinate system, and evenly distribute the midpoints of the box edges across the four quadrants. We use the midpoint of the first and second quadrants, as well as the width and height of the box, to represent the oriented bounding box. DMvectors solve the periodic problem of angles by implicitly including angle information in vectors. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method, we conducted extensive experiments on two common remote sensing datasets (DOTA and HRSC2016), and our method achieved competitive results.

Untargeted Attack against Federated Recommendation Systems via Poisonous Item Embeddings and the Defense

Federated recommendation (FedRec) can train personalized recommenders without collecting user data, but the decentralized nature makes it susceptible to poisoning attacks. Most previous studies focus on the targeted attack to promote certain items, while the untargeted attack that aims to degrade the overall performance of the FedRec system remains less explored. In fact, untargeted attacks can disrupt the user experience and bring severe financial loss to the service provider. However, existing untargeted attack methods are either inapplicable or ineffective against FedRec systems. In this paper, we delve into the untargeted attack and its defense for FedRec systems. (i) We propose ClusterAttack, a novel untargeted attack method. It uploads poisonous gradients that converge the item embeddings into several dense clusters, which make the recommender generate similar scores for these items in the same cluster and perturb the ranking order. (ii) We propose a uniformity-based defense mechanism (UNION) to protect FedRec systems from such attacks. We design a contrastive learning task that regularizes the item embeddings toward a uniform distribution. Then the server filters out these malicious gradients by estimating the uniformity of updated item embeddings. Experiments on two public datasets show that ClusterAttack can effectively degrade the performance of FedRec systems while circumventing many defense methods, and UNION can improve the resistance of the system against various untargeted attacks, including our ClusterAttack. Collaborative filtering (CF) from implicit datasets has attracted much attention in recent years. The current mainstream pairwise methods optimize the Area Under the Curve (AUC) and are empirically proven to be helpful to exploit implicit feedback, but lead to not addressing the rank-biased scenarios where positive items are supposed to be placed on the top-k positions. Although there exist listwise methods, they have low efficiency and are not particularly adequate for general implicit feedback situations. To that end, in this paper, we propose a new framework, namely Collaborative List-and-Pairwise Filtering (CLAPF), which aims to introduce pairwise thinking into listwise methods. Specifically, we first smooth a well-known rank-biased measure called Mean Average Precision (MAP) as a low-bound version to make it can be optimized. After that, we combined the objective functions of optimizing the MAP with pairwise comparisons. The CLAPF framework is a new hybrid model that provides the idea of utilizing a listwise measure in a pairwise way on implicit feedback.

lass imbalance and data obsolescence are two major issues in the field of credit scoring, leading to excessive bias and inaccuracies in the classification process of credit scoring models. In order to augment minority class samples and balance time dependencies, this paper proposes a credit scoring model based on Temporal Sample Interaction Convolutional Network (TSICN) to facilitate better credit risk assessment for financial institutions. It relies on the intrinsic features of the minority class samples to synthesize new data, thereby increasing the quantity of the minority class samples. Through inference and synthesis, It greatly mitigates the loss of information from minority class samples. The synthesized minority class samples, blended with the original data, are inputted into the causal convolutional layers and dilated convolutional layers. The information flow and memory updates are regulated through reset gate and update gate, The reset gate determines how to combine past information with the current input, while the update gate determines how to combine the previous hidden state with the current candidate hidden state. Compared to common methods, TSICN can integrate information features from minority class samples into the synthesis data, focusing more on short-term dependencies while reducing the capture of long-term dependencies. Experimental results show that TSICN achieves excellent credit scoring classification performance on real-world datasets. This enables more accurate prediction of applicant credit risk, thus reducing the risk of loan default.

Knowledge tracing (KT) aims to assess individuals’ evolving knowledge states according to their learning interactions with different exercises in online learning systems (OIS), which is critical in supporting decision-making for subsequent intelligent services, such as personalized learning source recommendation. Existing researchers have broadly studied KT and developed many effective methods. However, most of them assume that students’ historical interactions are uniformly distributed in a continuous sequence, ignoring the fact that actual interaction sequences are organized based on a series of quizzes with clear boundaries, where interactions within a quiz are consecutively completed, but interactions across different quizzes are discrete and may be spaced over days. In this paper, we present the Quiz-based Knowledge Tracing (QKT) model to monitor students’ knowledge states according to their quiz-based learning interactions. Specifically, as students’ interactions within a quiz are continuous and have the same or similar knowledge concepts, we design the adjacent gate followed by a global average pooling layer to capture the intra-quiz short-term knowledge influence. Then, as various quizzes tend to focus on different knowledge concepts, we respectively measure the inter-quiz knowledge substitution by the gated recurrent unit and the inter-quiz knowledge complementarity by the self-attentive encoder with a novel recency-aware attention mechanism. Finally, we integrate the inter-quiz long-term knowledge substitution and complementarity across different quizzes to output students’ evolving knowledge states. Extensive experimental results on three public real-world datasets demonstrate that QKT achieves state-of-the-art performance compared to existing methods. Layer-3 load balancing is a key topic in the networking field. It is well acknowledged that flowlet is the most promising solution because of its good trade-off between load balance and packet reordering. However, we find its one significant limitation: it makes the forwarding paths of flows unpredictable. To address this limitation, this paper presents BurstBalancer, a simple yet efficient load balancing system with a sketch, named BalanceSketch. Our design philosophy is doing less changes to keep the forwarding path of most flows fixed, which guides the design of BalanceSketch and balance operations. We have fully implemented BurstBalancer in a small-scale testbed built with Tofino switches, and conducted large-scale NS-2 simulations. Our results show that BurstBalancer achieves 5%∼35% smaller FCT than LetFlow in symmetric topology and up to 30× smaller FCT in asymmetric topology, while 58× fewer flows suffer from path changing. Knowledge Tracing (KT) is a fundamental task in contemporary intelligent educational systems, which tracks the knowledge states of the learners based on their response sequences. KT is crucial for the effectiveness of computer-assisted intelligent educational systems, such as intelligent tutoring systems and educational resource recommendation systems. In recent years, KT models benefited from the deep learning approaches and improved dramatically compared with the traditional probabilistic approaches. However, deep learning based KT models also have significant limitations. For example, Recurrent Neural Network (RNN)-based KT models can not capture dependencies in long-term sequences effectively, and attention mechanism-based KT models rely on the positional encoding to perceive sequential information, which may disrupt the semantics of the original embeddings. Moreover, the data sparsity question remains a big challenge in existing KT models. This study is based on the observation that KT shows a stronger sequential dependence in the long term than in the short term. In this paper, we propose a novel KT model called "Long-term and Short-term perception in knowledge tracing (LSKT)", which uses multilayer perceptrons and attention mechanism to capture the long-term and short-term dependencies, and employs 2PL-IRT based embedding to alleviate the data sparsity question. Extensive experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed LSKT model. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2023.
