Axial brain slices containing similar anatomical structures are retrieved using features derived from the histogram of Local binary pattern (LBP). A rotation invariant description of texture in terms of texture patterns and their strength is obtained with the incorporation of local variance to the LBP, called Modified LBP (MOD-LBP). In this paper, we compare Histogram based Features of LBP (HF/LBP), against Histogram based Features of MOD-LBP (HF/MOD-LBP) in retrieving similar axial brain images. We show that replacing local histogram with a local distance transform based similarity metric further improves the performance of MOD-LBP based image retrieval.

In distributed networks, some groups of nodes may have more inter-connections, perhaps due to their larger bandwidth availability or communication requirements. In many scenarios, it may be useful for the nodes to know if they form part of a dense subgraph, e.g., such a dense subgraph could form a high bandwidth backbone for the network. In this work, we address the problem of self-awareness of nodes in a dynamic network with regards to graph density, i.e., we give distributed algorithms for maintaining dense subgraphs (subgraphs that the member nodes are aware of). The only knowledge that the nodes need is that of the dynamic diameter D, i.e., the maximum number of rounds it takes for a message to traverse the dynamic network. For our work, we consider a model where the number of nodes are fixed, but a powerful adversary can add or remove a limited number of edges from the network at each time step. The communication is by broadcast only and follows the CONGEST model in the sense that only messages of O(log n) size are permitted, where n is the number of nodes in the network. Our algorithms are continuously executed on the network, and at any time (after some initialization) each node will be aware if it is part (or not) of a particular dense subgraph. We give algorithms that approximate both the densest subgraph, i.e., the subgraph of the highest density in the network, and the at-least-k-densest subgraph (for a given parameter k), i.e., the densest subgraph of size at least k. We give a (2 + Ε)-approximation algorithm for the densest subgraph problem. The at-least-k-densest subgraph is known to be NP-hard for the general case in the centralized setting and the best known algorithm gives a 2-approximation. We present an algorithm that maintains a (3+Ε)-approximation in our distributed, dynamic setting. Our algorithms run in O(Dlog1+Ε n) time. © 2012 Authors.

This paper proposes efficient indexing and querying services on encrypted user documents stored in the cloud. We develop few sophisticated techniques to ensure that any network intruder or even the cloud service provider itself is oblivious to both user data content and the type of operations performed over the data. All data operations, including encryption and decryption of data are performed in the client environment, thereby guaranteeing complete data security. By providing, such a secure system to store and access data on the cloud, end users will be free of any security concerns and hence can easily migrate their data to the cloud. We have implemented an Encryption Domain Text Retrieval (EDTR) System that has a server positioned in the cloud to provide indexing, storage and querying services and a client tool on the end user system that processes the user documents. In order to enable the cloud server to work on encrypted data, the client tool orchestrates the user data into sets of keywords which are again encrypted. We further provide an unique measurement technique to identify unfaithful execution of user requested services by the cloud service provider. Our experiments demonstrate the practical applicability of such a sophisticated system. Though we logically explain the security implications and how the EDTR system overcomes typical cloud security issues, we do not focus on providing concrete, theoretical security proofs.

Face Recognition has been identified as one of the attracting research areas and it has drawn the attention of many researchers due to its varying applications such as security systems, medical systems, entertainment, etc. A wide variety of systems requires reliable personal recognition schemes to either confirm or determine the identity of an individual requesting their services. Face recognition is the preferred mode of identification by humans: it is natural, robust and non-intrusive. The proposed approach uses Neural and Genetic algorithm that overcomes low recognition rate, low accuracy and increased time of recovery. Optimization of neural network parameters is done using Genetic algorithm. This increases recognition accuracy and reduced training time. © 2012 International Journal of computer science Issues.

Social communication websites has been an emerging type of a Web service that helps users to share their resources. For providing efficient similarity search of tag set in a social tagging system, we propose a multi-level hierarchical index structure to group similar tag sets. Not only the algorithms of similarity searches of tag sets, but also the algorithms of deletion and updating of tag sets by using the constructed index structure are provided. Furthermore, we define a modified hamming distance function on tag sets, which consider the semantically relatedness when comparing the members for evaluating the similarity of two tag sets. This function is more applicable to evaluate the similarity search of two tag sets. A systematic performance study is performed to verify the effectiveness and the efficiency of the proposed strategies. The experiment results show that the proposed MHIB approach further improves the pruning effect of the previous work which constructs a two-level index structure. Especially, the MHIB approach is well scalable with respect to the three parameters when using either the hamming distance or the modified hamming distance for similarity measure. Although the insertion operation of the MHIB approach requires higher cost than the naïve method, with the assistant of the constructed inverted list of clusters, it performs faster than the previous work. Besides, the cost of performing deletion operation by using the MHIB approach is much less than the other two approaches and so is the update operation.

Many electrical grid transients can be described by the propagation of electromechanical (EM) waves that couple oscillations of power flows over transmission lines and the inertia of synchronous generators. These EM waves can take several forms: large-scale standing waves forming inter-area modes, localized oscillations of single or multi-machine modes, or traveling waves that spread quasi-circularly from major grid disturbances. The propagation speed and damping of these EM waves are potentially a powerful tool for assessing grid stability, e.g. small signal or rotor angle stability, however, EM wave properties have been mostly extracted from post-event analysis of major grid disturbances. Using a small set of data from the FNET sensor network, we show how the spatially resolved Green's function for EM wave propagation can be extracted from ambient frequency noise without the need for a major disturbance. If applied to an entire interconnection, an EM-wave Green's function map will enable a model-independent method of predicting the propagation of grid disturbances and assessing stability.

WLAN-based indoor location fingerprinting has been attractive owing to the advantages of open access and high accuracy. Most fingerprinting-based systems so far rely on the received signal strength (RSS), which can be easily measured at the receiver with commercial WLAN equipment. However, RSS is a coarse value which simply measures the received power for a whole channel. Thus, it fluctuates over time in typical indoor environments with rich multipath effects and not unique for a specific location. In this paper, we present the design, implementation, and evaluation of a Fine-grained Indoor Fingerprinting System (FIFS). FIFS explores a PHYlayer Channel State Information (CSI) that specifies the channel status over all the subcarriers for location fingerprinting in WLAN. The system leverages the CSI values including different amplitudes and phases at multiple propagation paths, known as the frequency diversity, to uniquely manifest a location. Moreover, the multiple antennas provides the spatial diversity that can be further augmented in fingerprinting. We also present a coherence bandwidth-enhanced probability algorithm with a correlation filter to map object to the fingerprints. We conducted experiments in two typical indoor scenarios with commercial IEEE 802.11 NICs. The experimental results demonstrate that the overall positioning accuracy can be improved compared with the RSS-based Horus system.

Most of the neural networks in initial stage of enthusiasm, the field survived a period of frustration and disrepute. The reason for this is previous neuron doesn't do anything that conventional computers don't do already. Moreover they are observed to be too complex when noticed by humans as well as computers. Moreover we are furiously rising in fourth generation to increase the neural network standard in neurology and psychology. They are regularly used to model parts of living organisms and to investigate the internal mechanisms of the brain. At present the most exsisting aspect of neural networks is the possibility that some day `conscious' networks might be produced. Fuzzy logic and Neural network provide new method for desining control system and fuzzy logic and Neural networks can start with an approximate control knowledge base and refine it through inforcement learning.

In this paper, we outline observations made during projects in the field of innovative e-commerce information systems. Our first group of observations concentrates on the exploration of an innovative e-commerce idea. As it turns out, in the first phase of e-commerce information system development, an e-commerce idea should be developed into an e-commerce model, in which both business- and technical considerations play an important role, and on which stakeholders should agree. Moreover, stakeholders should be confident that the e-commerce idea is feasible from an economic perspective. Such a model then can be used to do a more detailed requirements engineering track. Our second group of observations concentrates on experiences with finding such a model.

The use of asynchronous duty cycling at the MAC layer affords substantial energy savings in wireless networks. This technique is widely used in sensor networks and other types of wireless networks such as ad hoc networks. With asynchronous duty cycling, each node switches alternately between sleeping and active states; each node waking up asynchronously reduces network contention and wireless collisions caused by nodes waking up simultaneously, but also can have undesirable effects on higher layer protocols. In this paper, we study the problem of on-demand route discovery in asynchronous duty-cycling wireless networks and present four optimizations for such route discovery: Delayed Selection, Duty-Cycled Selection, Reply Updating, and Adaptive Backoff. Through detailed ns-2 simulations, we show that, without these optimizations, the routes discovered in asynchronous duty-cycling networks can be over 50% longer than the theoretical shortest routes and can have an ETX 90% larger than the ETX of the optimal routes. With only simple changes made at the MAC or network layers, our optimizations enabled nodes to substantially improve discovered routes, finding routes that were only 0.2% longer than the theoretical shortest routes or routes with an ETX only 9% larger than the ETX of the theoretical optimal-ETX routes, while also reducing route discovery latency and node energy consumption.
