Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) consist of static router backbone which provide connectivity and coverage to mobile clients. They can also be viewed as a special case of wireless multi-hop Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs). The IETF group as well as the IEEE 802.11s working group have recommended applicability of several existing MANETs routing protocols for WMNs. However, in WMNs, client to client communications are through parent gateway via static routers, while in MANETs every arbitrary node pairs can act as source or destination. Therefore, it is of practical importance to re-evaluate MANETs routing protocols and make suitable modifications so that the protocols perform efficiently in WMNs environment. In this paper, we propose E-AODV, which is a variant of traditional Ad-hoc On-demand Distant Vector (AODV) routing, a protocol developed for MANETs. To evaluate E-AODV's performance and suitability in WMNs, a comparison of the protocol with traditional AODV and M-OLSR (a modified OLSR for WMNs), is carried out. © 2011 IEEE.

Seismic oceanography is based on the passage of a regularly repeating acoustic impulsive source and an acquisition streamer along the surface of the ocean, and on summing together all signals reflected from temperature and salinity interfaces in the ocean (where there are acoustic impedance contrasts). Due to the inherent redundancy of the method, random noise is attenuated, while signal is preserved;however, if the original signal-to-noise ratio is large enough, one need not use data from the entire streamer to create a 2D profile. A processing scheme is here devised to obtain consecutive images, known as stacks, of the structure of the water column. The scheme, named Seismic Offset Groups (SOG), consists in splitting the data from the whole streamer at a given geographical position into data produced by different streamer subsets. The method is illustrated by partitioning data from a 5-km long streamer into 7 offset groups separated by 3.5 min in time, thereby imaging the same seafloor-referenced location over a period of 21 min. As the streamer passes over a fixed geographical point, motions within the water column are observed. Each stack, created with a subset of the complete streamer, can therefore be considered an image of the water column at a particular time step (animation frame). In this way each image shows a different thermohaline fabric and the animation allows us to visualize internal ocean motions. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Shapes in images provide important features for pattern recognition, pattern matching, content-based image retrieval, etc. In this paper, a contour based structural approach is proposed to represent any arbitrary shape in an image by an alpha-numeric string. The proposed method performs decomposition of the region into disjoint sub-regions by detecting the features of the contour such as bend points, vertical & horizontal straight lines, etc. The representation of those sub-regions is achieved by using strings in a six letter alphabet. The representation is invariant to size since it includes a size-based ratio. The drawbacks of existing contour-based shape representation techniques are discussed, and it is shown how this new method overcomes them. Copyright © 2011 ACM.

Cellular operators are facing difficulties in supporting a huge increment in the subscribers due to spectrum and equipment restrictions. There have been many proposals in the area of increasing call carrying capacity such as Reuse Partitioning and Directed Retry. However, such action increases the size of the network and results to higher installation, maintenance and optimization costs for the cellular operator. In this paper we are proposing a cost effective new channel reservation scheme based on subscribers' average call duration which can be implemented in any existing cell. A cell has been considered which has very few allocated channels and is also unable to execute load balancing methods such as channel borrowing, call transfer etc. Also, the average call duration of the subscribers are taken in the range of 0 - 40 minutes. A cell with such restrictions may have higher blocking probability, but the results show that the proposed channel allocation scheme can effectively reduce the overall call-blocking for such cell. This scheme is particularly useful in a cell having heavy traffic with mostly business calls. © 2011 IEEE.

Steganography is the art and science of covered or hidden writing. The purpose of steganography is covert communication to hide the existence of a message from an intermediary. Digital Steganography algorithms have been developed by using texts, images and audio etc as the cover media. This paper presents a new approach on text steganography through Indian Languages. Considering the properties of a sentence such as number of words, number of characters, number of vowels etc and using the presence of redundant feature code able characters in Indian Languages, this approach hides the message into an innocent cover file containing Indian texts. This approach also presents the extraction of message from the generated cover file by applying the reverse method of hiding. The approach shows satisfactory results on applying to some topic of daily newspaper in Indian Languages like Bengali. © 2011 IEEE.

Knowledge Management (KM) System plays a crucial role in every industry as well as Higher Learning Institutions where capturing, sharing, managing & archiving knowledge assets are important for increasing knowledge workers or users productivity at the same token utilizing the available KM infrastructure effectively. Based on the research works, we have identified that there are challenges in measuring and evaluating the effectiveness of the Knowledge Management Systems. The primary goal of this research paper is to design and develop a domain-independent multi-dimensional metric model which can be helpful to build a metric database or toolset for evaluating the effectiveness of the Knowledge Management Systems (KMS). In this proposed work, we first list out some of the ways to conduct the evaluation of KMS and describe a suitable measurement process which can be helpful to conduct an evaluation experiment against the knowledge management systems. Secondly we describe the importance of the prime quality factors, key attributes and outcome metrics for designing and developing a metric model. Based on the in-depth study and comparison with various software quality models, we have come up with a design of multi-dimensional metric model for evaluating any KMS. Finally, we discuss how this process and model will be helpful to map to mathematical model and also to build the metric database for generating metric report for analyzing the gaps, effectiveness and benefits of the knowledge management systems. © 2011 IEEE.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is the most common sleep-disordered breathing disease. Considering its severe effect on human health, long-term monitoring is necessary. However, the current OSAS monitoring systems require patients to stay in the hospital overnight and need considerable amount of wiring around the human body. This paper proposes a smartphone-based, wireless e-health system designed for OSAS, which offers anytime and anywhere monitoring. The study focuses on the energy issues of this battery-driven system, and makes full use of the low-power mode of Bluetooth, which has been proven to be the energy bottleneck, resulting in 50% increase of system lifetime. Compared with current methods for Bluetooth mode switch, this proposal, implemented on smartphone, improves system versatility and expandability, and provides technical support for holistic energy-saving approach based on load balancing among data storage, transmission and computation. © Copyright 2012, Editorial department of Journal of Software.

This research develops a fuzzy knowledge-based decision support system (FKBDSS) that measures and predicts the degree of severity of the work-related risk associated with shoulder and neck pain (SNP) that is a prevalent pain complaint in an occupational environment. Assessing the harshness of SNP is a dreary chore, since the risk factors are featured with imprecision, uncertainty and vagueness. Predicting SNP subjective risk level provides key decision support information to medical practitioners in diagnosis. The objective involves knowledge acquisition performed through literature analysis, traditional and concept mapping interviews with domain experts comprising neurologist, orthopaedist, psychologist and physiotherapist to identify risk factors that include mechanical, physical and psychosocial categories. The determination of ranking the relative factor importance has accomplished using analytic hierarchy processing (AHP) analysis. The linguistic variables that qualify risk levels are quantified using fuzzy set theory (FST) that provides linguistic and numeric value outputs to predict the hazard level of SNP. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. An Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) involves a much closer interaction between all of its components: drivers, pedestrians, public transportation and traffic management systems. Adaptive signal systems, driver advisory and route planning and automated vehicles are some of the goals set up to increase the efficiency of actual systems. Vehicular network became one of the most active and emerging fields of research during last decade. Its use in diversified applications (for example safe driving, congestion avoidance, parking assist system and even entertainment) will soon bring revolutionary changes in transportation system. In this paper we have reviewed applications of wireless sensor network towards developing an efficient system to control and manage smooth traffic flow. © 2011 IEEE.
