Issues of friendly human-machine interfaces have driven various researches, such as face animation, face recognition, and facial expression recognition in the last decade. The success of these applications relies on the accuracy of the detected facial features. Despite that facial features may be extracted automatically by some methods, however, the effective results were obtained in certain restricted conditions, such as face images acquired in the front view. This study proposed a facial feature extraction method in different views. A contour descriptor is adopted to describe the shape of faces. Then, the views were automatically recognized using a radial basis function neural network. According to the recognition result, the respective facial feature extraction was applied. Experimental results show that the proposed method can recognize face views (front view, half profile view, and profile view) and extract their corresponding feature points correctly.

Capacitated Arc Routing Problem (CARP) has drawn much attention during the last few years because of its applications in the real world. Recently, we developed a Memetic Algorithm with Extended Neighborhood Search (MAENS), which is powerful in solving CARP. The excellent performance of MAENS is mainly due to one of its local search operators, namely the Merge-Split (MS) operator. However, the higher computational complexity of the MS operator compared to traditional local search operators remains as the major drawback of MAENS, especially when applying it to large-size instances. In this paper, we propose a heuristic candidate list strategy to sample the neighbors generated by the MS operator instead of enumerating or sampling them randomly, in order to avoid unnecessary callings of the MS operator during local search. Based on the strategy, an improved algorithm of MAENS, namely MAENS-II, is developed. Experimental results on benchmark instances showed that MAENS-II managed to obtain the same level of solution quality as MAENS with much less computational time. This should be credited to the utilization of the proposed heuristic strategy. On the other hand, in case both MAENS and MAENS-II were provided comparable computational time, MAENS-II outperformed MAENS in terms of solution quality.

This paper presents a self-guided tour system that allows a visitor to instantly share his/her notes or remarks about exhibits with others through the Internet. The note/remark not only can be stored with the exhibit information to be accessed by other visitors, but also can be broadcasted through microblogging in a timely manner. This provides an interaction mechanism for the visitor to feedback his/her remark on a certain exhibit to the administration and to share it with friends instantly. A prototype system for such an environment was realized through the RFID and mobile technologies. The architecture and the development of the prototype system are illustrated in this paper.

Skin analysis is one of the most important procedures before medical cosmetology. Most conventional skin analysis systems are semi-automatic. They often require human intervention. In this study, an automatic facial skin defect detection approach is proposed. The system first detects human face in the facial image. Based on the detected face, facial features are extracted to locate regions of interest. Then, a pattern recognition approach is applied to detect facial skin defects, such as spots and wrinkles, in the regions of interest. For a specific kind of defect, a classifier is designed to provide higher performance for recognition. Using few features extracted from the region of interest, the proposed approach can successfully detect the skin defects. Experimental results demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed approach.

3D steganography using parametric functions

We present a novel steganographic algorithm using parametric functions which consider the parametric domain and the spatial domain. This scheme enables us to utilize various types of geometry as a cover model for achieving steganography. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to employ parametric functions on two domains for 3D steganography. Our scheme has four advantages. First, the data capacity is proportional to the numbers of sample points generated. Second, the cover model is very flexible, supporting various kinds of geometry. Third, our scheme is very fast. Finally, it provides the feature of shape preservation. ICIC International © 2010.

In order to fulfill the full flight envelope aero-engine control, as one of the most effective solutions, gain scheduling control system was designed in this paper which could weaken the influence of the limited robust of traditional controller. Based on the previous works such as the engine modeling and the two degrees-of-freedom (2DOF) H∞ loop-shaping controller design, the full flight envelope was divided up into eight regions and the control system which was constituted by eight 2DOF controllers for each sub-regions was constructed in which the eight controllers of different sub-regions could be switched based on the engine altitude and Mach number. In order to decrease the disturbance in the process of switchover between the controllers of different sub-regions, as an innovation, the bumpless switch logic based on the technology called `inertia delayed to soften the switch' was adopted in the control system. For the purpose of checking the effect of full envelope control system, the hardware in-the-loop simulations have been done on the real-time simulation platform based on rapid prototype. The excellent performance of the full envelope robust control system for the turbofan engine was shown, as well as the validity of flight envelope dividing method and the bumpless switch logic was verified.

The 2D space-charge-limited (SCL) current density in a diode is an important problem for electron beam generation in High Power Microwave (HPM) devices. The SCL current in this research is defined as the largest current that can be emitted from a 2D region such that the resultant electron beam can propagate without reflected particles. Recently Rokhlenko and Lebowitz derived the SCL current in 2D using a semi-analytical solution to the boundary value problem. They found that the current wings near the boundaries have width about 1/3 of the current. This makes the mean current density for narrow beams much greater than the SCL current. Watrous et al. used particle-in-cell (PIC) codes to study this problem for a variety of beam widths w and anode-cathode (AK) gap spacings d and found that, although the current density profile varies with both w and d, the total current is a function of the dimensionless ratio w/d. In this work we study two geometries: (i) a wide electron beam on a wider cathode, eliminating edge effects from narrow cathodes, and (ii) a parallel-plate capacitor floating in vacuum with the entire cathode emitting, resulting in a narrow beam, which includes knife edge effects from the cathode. In ICEPIC simulations of the first geometry we are improving on earlier results with a higher degree of accuracy. Our results are in close agreement with earlier simulation results and the semi-analytical solutions of. We are analyzing the effects of various parameters of the simulation space. The resolution and aspect ratio of the cells are analyzed as well as the emission method and particle distribution. The parallel-plate capacitor geometry is also simulated with different numerical parameters to determine the optimal set of parameters to simulate this kind of cathode. The effects of knife edge emission are compared to the analytic theory of Rokhlenko and Lebowitz.

This paper examines the applications of statistical physics-stochastic processes, ergodic principles, the use of nonlinear dynamic state equations and chaos, and the Wiener-Khintchine theorem to better explain how Intentional ElectroMagnetic Interference (IEMI) disrupts the performance of feedback and hybrid electronic systems such as control systems, power electronics and SCADAs. The origin of spurious “almost-random” voltage fluctuations induced within a complicated enclosure when exposed to EM fluences is explained, and a mathematical formulation to quantify the energy coupled into a complicated cavity under High Power Microwave stress is derived.

A medical system-on-chip (SoC) that integrates an ARM Cortex-M3 processor is presented. Ultra-low power operation is achieved via 0.5-1.0 V operation, a 28 fW/bit fully differential subthreshold 6T SRAM, a 90%-efficient DC-DC converter, and a 100-nJ fast Fourier transform (FFT) accelerator to reduce processor workload. Using a combination of novel circuit design, system architecture, and SoC implementation, the first sub-microwatt per channel electroencephalograph (EEG) seizure detection is demonstrated.

A surgical technique currently used in the treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) is the Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR). This minimally invasive procedure involves inserting a prosthesis in the aortic vessel that excludes the aneurysm from the bloodstream. The stent, once in place acts as a false lumen for the blood current to travel down, and not into the surrounding aneurysm sac. This procedure, therefore, immediately takes the pressure off the aneurysm, which thromboses itself after some time. Nevertheless, in a long term perspective, different complications such as prosthesis displacement or bloodstream leaks into or from the aneurysmatic bulge (endoleaks) could appear causing a pressure elevation and, as a result, increasing the danger of rupture. The purpose of this work is to explore the application of image registration techniques to the visual detection of changes in the thrombus in order to assess the evolution of the aneurysm.
