Self-configurable environment for the intel IXP2400 network processor

Network processors (NPs) are programmable multi-processor devices that offer both the flexibility and speed required for the network packet processing applications. Current NP systems do not simultaneously deal well with fluctuating workloads. Because of the traffic fluctuations inherent in packet networks, the workload on each pipeline stage in NP may vary significantly over time, thus affecting performance. One solution would be to change the code running at these stages so as to adapt to the fluctuations. Hence, the allocation of processors to pipeline stages needs to be adapted over time. Run-time adaptation is a potential solution to this problem. With run-time adaptation, the mapping of services to system resources can be dynamically adjusted based on the workload. Dynamically adapting processor allocations reduces the overall resource provisioning requirement for the system. This results in achieving robustness to traffic fluctuations. In this paper, we focus on reconfiguring the system based on the traffic fluctuation. To make decision about the deployment of code, the traffic is monitored and its statistic is maintained. Moreover, active network concept is used for reconfiguring the system, wherein the binary code is transferred to the NP through the SOAP protocol.

Clustering the process of grouping homogeneous objects is an important data mining process. Few algorithms exist to cluster categorical data. K-modes is the scalable and efficient algorithm to cluster the categorical data. In this paper we propose a new distance measure for K-modes based on the cardinality of domain of attribute. The proposed method is experimented with data sets obtained from UCI data repository. Results prove that the proposed measure generates better clusters than the K-modes algorithm.

This paper presents an overview of the emerging field of emotion detection from text and describes the current generation of detection methods that are usually divided into the following three main categories: keyword-based, learning-based, and hybrid recommendation approaches. Limitations of current detection methods are examined, and possible solutions are suggested to improve emotion detection capabilities in practical systems, which emphasize on human-computer interactions. These solutions include extracting keywords with semantic analysis, and ontology design with emotion theory of appraisal. Furthermore, a case-based reasoning architecture is proposed to combine these solutions.

Conventional data grid systems require the application to access remote data through explicit APIs, consequently sacrificing user transparency. Thus, some systems enable the application to transparently access remote data by copying the entire file to a userpsilas local storage before executing the application, even when only a tiny file fragment is required. Such an approach consumes unnecessary transmission time and storage space, with the additional problem of maintaining replica synchronization. Traditionally, replica consistency treats shared files as read-only, consequently sacrificing guaranteed replica consistency. This paper presents a DSM-based fragment-level file sharing framework called ldquoSpigotrdquo. Spigot allows the users to design their applications with the POSIX I/O interface. Moreover, Spigot transfers only the necessary file fragments on user demand, thereby reducing transmission time, wasted network bandwidth and required storage space. Data waiting time is further reduced by overlapping data transmission and data analysis. The DSM concept maintains replica synchronization. Real experiments show reduced turnaround times in data-intensive applications.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is a dangerous condition where the weakening of the aortic wall leads to its deformation and the generation of a thrombus. To prevent a possible rupture of the aortic wall, AAAs can be treated non-invasively by means of the Endovascular Aneurysm Repair technique (EVAR), which consists of placing a stent-graft inside the aorta in order to exclude the bulge from the blood circulation and usually leads to its contraction. Nevertheless, the bulge may continue to grow without any apparent leak. In order to effectively assess the changes experienced after surgery, it is necessary to segment the aneurysm, which is a very time-consuming task. Here we describe the initial results of a novel model-based approach for the semi-automatic segmentation of both the lumen and the thrombus of AAAs, using radial functions constrained by a priori knowledge and spatial coherency. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

Good eating habits can make human beings to live in a healthy lifestyle. When a person constantly eats too much or too little, it will have a high risk of causing a disease for him. Therefore, developing healthy and balanced eating habits is important for most people to stay away from diseases. This study proposes an intelligent healthy diet planning multi-agent (IHDPMA), including a personal profile agent, a nutrition facts analysis agent, a knowledge analysis agent, a discovery agent, a fuzzy inference agent, and a semantic generation agent for healthy diet planning. The IHDPMA provides a semantic analysis of healthy diet status for people based on the pre-constructed ontology by domains experts and results of fuzzy inference. With the generated semantic analysis, people can get healthy information about what they eat and make it easier to eat a balanced and healthy diet. The experimental platform has been constructed to test the performance of the IHDPMA. The results indicate that the IHDPMA can effectively work for healthy diet planning.

In this paper, we present the coupled-wave analysis for multiple thick holographic gratings for optical beam combining. Starting with the basic model of incoherently superimposed multiple gratings used to form the beam-combiner, we derive equations that describe wave propagation in a holographic substrate containing angular multiplexed gratings with either sinusoidal refractive index or absorption modulation including the off-Bragg matched condition. Numerical results are presented for multiple thick holographic gratings in three different geometries: the beam-splitter mode, the beam-combiner mode, and the cross-coupled mode. The effect of non-equal beam intensities and phased angle variation on the efficiency of beam combiner have been investigated. Experiment is performed to create an efficient six beam splitter-combiner using a thick photopolymer based holographic material. The experimental measurement for efficiency in beam combining compares well with the predicted value from our theoretical model. Copyright © 2009 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved.

This paper reports on AnnieWAY, an autonomous vehicle that is capable of driving through urban scenarios and that has successfully entered the finals of the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge competition. After describing the main challenges imposed and the major hardware components, we outline the underlying software structure and focus on selected algorithms. Environmental perception mainly relies on a recent laser scanner which delivers both range and reflectivity measurements. While range measurements are used to provide 3D scene geometry, measuring reflectivity allows for robust lane marker detection. Mission and maneuver planning is conducted using a concurrent hierarchical state machine that generates behavior in accordance with California traffic laws. We conclude with a report of the results achieved during the competition. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Online virtual worlds offer exciting new opportunities for enterprises or businesses. To exploit these opportunities enterprises need to find a way to integrate virtual world services with their real-world services, and to exploit virtual worlds rich collaboration environment to offer new or enhanced services. However, there are many challenges to realizing these goals, such as resolving virtual and real identifications, controlling communication sessions between real and virtual world entities, and managing resources in both worlds. In this paper, we study these issues and propose a framework for integrating virtual worlds into enterprise service work flow. We implemented a customer service in a VW contact center that is integrated with corresponding enterprise services. We also present a novel mechanism in virtual worlds that allow users to bring their own resources, along with the contact center resources, and share the resources with other customers or agents to resolve customer issues. Further, we present experiences from our prototype.

Body-language understanding is essential to human robot interaction, and hand posture recognition is one of the most important components in a body-language recognition system. The existing hand posture recognition approaches based on robust local features such as SIFT can be invariant to background noise and in-plane rotation. However the ignorance of the relationships among local features is a fundamental issue. The part-based models argue that objects of the same category share the same part-structure which consists of parts and relationships among parts. In this paper, a discriminative part-based model, hidden conditional random fields (HCRFs), is used to recognize hand postures. Although the existing global locations of features have been used to consider large scale dependency among parts in the HCRFs framework, the results are not invariant to in-plane rotation. New features by the distance to the image center are proposed to encode the global relationship as well as to perform in-plane rotation-invariant recognition. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach is in-plane rotation-invariant and outperforms the approach using AdaBoost with SIFT.
