With the development of petascale computing systems, a long-term effort is needed to educate and train the next generation of researchers. As part of its graduate education component, the Virtual School of Computational science and engineering held a summer school in August 2008 entitled "Accelerators for science and engineering applications," providing participants with knowledge and hands-on experience with graphics processing units (GPUs). In this paper, we present visualizations exploring the broad spectrum of summer school applicants and participants. We examine demographic information of the overall applicant pool, accepted and attending applicants, and remote participants, as well as apply hierarchical clustering and rule association techniques to all applicant data. These statistical and data mining analyses demonstrate the wide range of fields of study where research applications can be readily accelerated through the use of massively parallel computing resources.

The Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) has been the workhorse of the Landsat system. Launched in 1984, it continues collecting data through the time frame of this paper. Thus, it provides an invaluable link to the past history of the land features of the Earth's surface, and it becomes imperative to provide an accurate radiometric calibration of the reflective bands to the user community. Previous calibration has been based on information obtained from prelaunch, the onboard calibrator, vicarious calibration attempts, and cross-calibration with Landsat-7. Currently, additional data sources are available to improve this calibration. Specifically, improvements in vicarious calibration methods and development of the use of pseudoinvariant sites for trending provide two additional independent calibration sources. The use of these additional estimates has resulted in a consistent calibration approach that ties together all of the available calibration data sources. Results from this analysis indicate a simple exponential, or a constant model may be used for all bands throughout the lifetime of Landsat-5 TM. Where previously time constants for the exponential models were approximately one year, the updated model has significantly longer time constants in bands 1-3. In contrast, bands 4, 5, and 7 are shown to be best modeled by a constant. The models proposed in this paper indicate calibration knowledge of 5% or better early in life, decreasing to nearly 2% later in life. These models have been implemented at the U.S. Geological Survey Earth Resources Observation and science (EROS) and are the default calibration used for all Landsat TM data now distributed through EROS. © 2008 IEEE.

Demosaicking interpolation and digital zooming are two significant techniques for the quality of enlarged full-color image in resource-constrained single chip devices. This paper proposes an effective demosaicking and zooming algorithm by referencing to the neighboring information. In addition to considering one direction neighboring information to estimate the missing value, the EDZ algorithm develops expressions to join the horizontal, vertical, and diagonal neighboring information to improve the accuracy of the estimated value. Experiments performed on the EDZ algorithm and previous schemes show that the EDZ algorithm achieves better visual perception and the PSNR measurement in average.

In this paper, we propose an age estimation system on the AIBO. AIBO is an entertainment robot produced by SONY co., Ltd.. AIBO has many sensors to get information around itself and moves according to its instinct. This autonomous action is considerably natural. However, it is inadequate to communicate with people. If AIBO can estimate the human age from a face image, it becomes more excellent entertainment robot. Then, we propose the age estimation method on the AIBO by using face image. In this paper, the apparent age feature is extracted by the fast Fourier transform (FFT), and it is selected by the GA. Moreover, the age is estimated by the 1-dimensional SOM. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed method, we show the simulation examples.

Diabetes is a chronic illness that food intake affects the bodypsilas needs and insulinpsilas ability to lower blood sugar. This paper proposes an intelligent agent, called the personal food recommendation agent, based on the ontology model for diabetic food recommendation. The agent can create a meal plan according to a personpsilas lifestyle and particular health needs. The required knowledge is stored in the ontology model predefined by domain experts. It contains the Taiwanese food ontology and a set of personal food ontology. The personal food recommendation agent includes the ontology creating mechanism, the personal ontology filter, the food fuzzy number creating mechanism, the fuzzy inference mechanism, and the real-time recommendation mechanism. It retrieves the personal ontology and meal records to recommend a personal meal plan based on the fuzzy inference mechanism. An experimental platform has been constructed to test the performance of the agent. The results indicate that the proposed method can work effectively and alleviate the effort of a registered dietician.

IEEE 802.11e standard is developed for QoS provisioning in WLANs. Admission Control is a mechanism that controls stations to be served in WLANs. In practice, evaluation of admission control plays an important role for QoS support. The goal of this paper is to calculate the WLAN delays with ACs. The delay calculation can be used to guarantee the QoS of the VoIP and video streams, which is divided into three parts. One is the propagation delay. Another is that packets queue up in stations or APs. Lastly, the delay is taken due to collisions. For VoIP and video streams, the second delay is more important than other two delays. Consequently, we will focus on the calculation of the second delay. Some simulations and numerical results are provided and discussed in detail. Experimental results show that the proposed method is more accurate in calculating the delay of packets in WLANs.

The saline water color component characteristic (chlorophyll-a and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM)) and their spatial change tendency in the Pearl River Estuary from the In-situ data in December of 2006 was studied. Based on the experimental results, the mixing behavior of CDOM in the Shawan-Humen Watercourse was analyzed. The mixing behavior was controlled by topography, hydrological and biological factors, and the relationships among absorption characteristics of CDOM (at 400 nm, ag400). Contained is a discussion of chlorophyll-a concentration and salinity. The chlorophyll-a concentration decreases with increasing CDOM absorption under a salinity of 10, while the chlorophyll-a concentration decreases with increasing salinity. The salinity is becomes less aggressive towards the Lingding Bay in the saltwater intrusion reach of Shawan-Humen, and a low chlorophyll-a concentration area occurs in the Shiziyang riverway where the salinity is greater than 20. The highest chlorophyll-a concentration of surface water was observed in the Dadaoshawei site of the Shawan tributary reach- where the saltwater and freshwater interface. The slope distribution of the CDOM spectral absorption curve in the Shawan-Humen watercourse was increased towards the Lingding Bay direction. The spectral slope S value of CDOM varied from 0.0107 to 0.0121 nm-1 with an average value of 0.0116 nm-1. This was an indication that the terrestrial river input was the main resource of CDOM in the Shawan-Humen watercourse. The high correlation (R2=0.9458) of surface water and bottom water (-7.5m) salinity showed that salinity can be monitored by remote sensing. The ag400 in the saltwater intrusion reach showed conservative behavior, indicating strong characteristics of the CDOM it reflected. There was a correlative relationship between ag400, chlorophyll-a concentration and the salinity, showing that a water color analysis technique can be used to study the distribution and behavior of salinit

Globalization is making both developed and developing countries think about effective and efficient strategies that will advance their economies and social development. Throughout the history of civilization, engineering has played a critical role in economic development. Engineers are key not only in solving local problems but also in knowledge creation and knowledge transfer. Thus, it is imperative that technical know-how be supplemented with professional skills to develop an 'adaptive leader' who is capable of addressing the multiple challenges of an ever changing world. The key-question posed by the 21st century global economy to engineering educators and stake-holders is this: "How can education in science and technology help to reduce poverty, boost socio-economic development, and take the right decisions for sustainable and environmental compatible development?" To answer these questions, a global approach is needed: and this can only be accomplished by a "team" which has its roots in all regions of the world, i.e. which is enabled to think globally and then act locally. There's a need to establish effective engineering education processes of high quality around the world to assure a global supply of well-prepared engineering graduates. This paper describes the reasons for the creation in October 2006 of IFEES - the International Federation of engineering Education Societies. It will describe the vision, mission, and key strategies of IFEES. It will also describe some of the initiatives currently underway and how the various engineering education stakeholders can leverage and benefit from engaging with IFEES, thus strengthening the organizational capacity of engineering education societies throughout the world. The paper will share plans to help members learn from each other's best practices and even failures and how those organizations that have been in existence for quite some time (ASEE was founded in the late 19th century) can contribute to the institutio

Generalized Load Sharing for Homogeneous Networks of Distributed Environment

We propose a method for job migration policies by considering effective usage of global memory in addition to CPU load sharing in distributed systems. When a node is identified for lacking sufficient memory space to serve jobs, one or more jobs of the node will be migrated to remote nodes with low memory allocations. If the memory space is sufficiently large, the jobs will be scheduled by a CPU-based load sharing policy. Following the principle of sharing both CPU and memory resources, we present several load sharing alternatives. Our objective is to reduce the number of page faults caused by unbalanced memory allocations for jobs among distributed nodes, so that overall performance of a distributed system can be significantly improved. We have conducted trace-driven simulations to compare CPU-based load sharing policies with our policies. We show that our load sharing policies not only improve performance of memory bound jobs, but also maintain the same load sharing quality as the CPU-based policies for CPU-bound jobs. Regarding remote execution and preemptive migration strategies, our experiments indicate that a strategy selection in load sharing is dependent on the amount of memory demand of jobs, remote execution is more effective for memory-bound jobs, and preemptive migration is more effective for CPU-bound jobs. Our CPU-memory-based policy using either high performance or high throughput approach and using the remote execution strategy performs the best for both CPU-bound and memory-bound job in homogeneous networks of distributed environment.

Patent terminology classification using relaxation labeling

In this paper, an approach to unknown term classification using relaxation labeling is proposed. The technique is used to classify the terminologies in patent documents. The terminologies on a CMP (chemical mechanical polishing) domain about the relations among components, the attributes and materials of components are to be extracted by NLP technique and regular expressions. ? In the progress of relaxation labeling, the probability of each class for each unclassified term was updated. Based on the extracted semantic information, the experiment results show that relaxation labeling is sufficient for terminology classification and has achieved 72% of accuracy.
