In this paper, the effect of wind airflow over a monocrystalline photovoltaic panel (PV) was examined in relation to general velocity and temperature contours. The analysis was obtained using the developed numerical CFD model that was validated by available experimental results. The airflow velocity ranged from 0.5 m/s up to 4.0 m/s and the gained results are specified for different longitudinal cross-sections of the PV panel. The obtained results gave detailed insight into velocity profiles and temperature stratification over the PV panel surface, where specific discovered effects were addressed. The provided research results in this paper are important for the development of a novel or improved existing cooling techniques for PV panels where the final effect is a targeted increase in average PV panel efficiency. © 2017 Univeristy of Split, FESB.

Animal-computer Interaction (ACI) is a new and quickly developing discipline, which is closely related to HCI and is making reference to some of its theoretical frameworks and research methodologies. The first edition of the Workshop on Research Methods in ACI (RM4ACI) was co-located with the Third International Conference on Animal-computer Interaction, which took place in Milton-Keynes, UK in November 2016. This paper presents an overview of the workshop, including insights from discussions on some of the challenges faced by the ACI community as it works to develop ACI as a discipline, and on important opportunities for cross-fertilization between HCI and ACI that the HCI community could consider. Text is still the dominant form of human-computer-human communication. Users with certain motor or visual impairments may be unable to use certain text entry interfaces such as the small virtual keyboards on mobile phones effectively due to challenges hitting small targets. Despite the vast amount of research into text entry, no efforts have explored the so-called Russian tap-codes, or knock codes, which were commonly used to communicate between prison inmates. Tapping does not require the user to hit a specific target. This study proposes a theoretical framework for classifying text entry designs. The framework is used to explore 16 text entry designs, namely the classic Russian tap code and design variations exploiting more recent results in text entry research and the context of current hardware, allowing unfeasible designs to be easily eliminated. © 2016 ACM.

Efficient resource utilization requires that emerging datacenter interconnects support both high performance communication and efficient remote resource sharing. These goals require that the network be more tightly coupled with the CPU chips. designing a new interconnection technology thus requires considering not only the interconnection itself, but also the design of the processors that will rely on it. In this paper, we study memory hierarchy implications for the design of high-speed datacenter interconnects particularly as they affect remote memory access -- and we use PCIe as the vehicle for our investigations. To that end, we build three complementary platforms： a PCIe-interconnected prototype server with which we measure and analyze current bottlenecks; a software simulator that lets us model microarchitectural and cache hierarchy changes; and an FPGA prototype system with a streamlined switchless customized protocol Thunder with which we study hardware optimizations outside the processor. We highlight several architectural modifications to better support remote memory access and communication, and quantify their impact and ]imitations.

This paper reports the preliminary measurement results for characterising the speech privacy performance of an open ceiling meeting room called Fabpod in RMIT University, where the Speech Privacy Class standardized in the ASTM E2638 was adopted in the measurements to rate the speech privacy performance. The background sound pressure level inside and outside the Fabpod and the sound pressure level differences at different locations inside and outside the Fabpod with different sound source locations were measured in one third octave bands from 50 Hz to 10000 Hz. Based on the measurement results, the Speech Privacy Class of the Fabpod was calculated. The conclusion is that the Fabpod cannot meet the normal speech privacy criteria and the meeting inside the Fabpod can easily be overheard outside. Speech privacy is affected by many factors including the speech attenuation from the sound source to the receiver and the level of the background noise. The speech attenuation from the sound source to the receiver depends on the height of the wall or barrier, the sound absorption coefficient of the ceiling and the distance between the sound source and receiver. To achieve acceptable speech privacy for the Fabpod, all design parameters have to be tuned to near optimum values. The measures that can be used to increase the speech privacy of the Fabpod are discussed.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Delay defects under high temperature have been one of the most critical factors to affect the reliability of computer systems, and the current test methods don't address this problem properly. In this paper, a temperature-aware software-based self-testing (SBST) technique is proposed to self-heat the processors within a high temperature range and effectively test delay faults under high temperature. First, it automatically generates high-quality test programs through automatic test instruction generation (ATIG), and avoids over-testing caused by nonfunctional patterns. Second, it exploits two effective powerintensive program transformations to self-heat up the processors internally. Third, it applies a greedy algorithm to search the optimized schedule of the test templates in order to generate the test program while making sure that the temperature of the processor under test is within the specified range. Experimental results show that the generated program is successful to guarantee delay test within the given temperature range, and achieves high test performance with functional patterns.

Solid State Disk (SSD) arrays are in a position to (as least partially) replace spinning disk arrays in high performance computing (HPC) systems due to their better performance and lower power consumption. However, these emerging SSD arrays are facing enormous challenges, which are not observed in disk-based arrays. Specifically, we observe that the performance of SSD arrays can significantly degrade due to various array-level resource contentions. In addition, their maintenance costs exponentially increase over time, which renders them diff cult to deploy widely in HPC systems. To address these challenges, we propose Triple-A, a non-SSD based Autonomic All-Flash Array, which is a self-optimizing, from-scratch NAND f ash cluster. Triple-A can detect two different types of resource contentions and autonomically alleviate them by reshaping the physical data-layout on its f ash array network. Our experimental evaluation using both real workloads and a micro-benchmark show that Triple-A can offer a 53% higher sustained throughput and a 80% lower I/O latency than non-autonomic SSD arrays Copyright © 2014 ACM.

This paper describes the design and implementation of three-dimensional (3-D) Haar with transpose-based computation and distributed arithmetic (DA). As a results of the separately property of the multi-dimensional Haar wavelet transform (HWT), the proposed architecture has been implemented using a cascade of three N-point one-dimensional (1-D) Haar and two transpose memories for a 3-D volume of N × N × N, suitable for 3-D medical image compression. The 3-D HWT architecture were implemented on SubRIO-9632 board National Instrument. Experimental result and analysis of area, power consumption and maximum frequency are discussed in this paper.
