Lock-free simulation algorithm to enhance the performance of sequential and parallel DEVS simulators in shared-memory architectures

This paper presents a new algorithm for the Discrete EVent System Specification (DEVS) formalism that improves the performance of simulating complex systems by reducing the number of iterations through the model components in each simulation step. It also minimizes unnecessary visits to model components by propagating simulation routines only when necessary. Additionally, we provide two parallel versions of this new simulation algorithm that use work-stealing scheduling and avoid locking mechanisms without compromising the validity of the execution in shared-memory architectures. We implemented the proposed algorithms in the xDEVS simulator and evaluated their performance using the DEVStone synthetic benchmark. The results show that the proposed algorithms outperform state-of-the-art alternatives. For computationally intensive models, parallel implementations achieve high parallelism efficiency. Furthermore, they are more resilient to model complexity than the sequential algorithm, showing better performance for complex models even without computational overhead in state transition functions. © 2025 The Author(s)

Tower solar thermal power generation is a new type of low-carbon and environmentally friendly clean energy technology. In this paper, a single-objective optimization model is established with the maximum annual average thermal output per unit mirror area of the heliostat field as the objective function. By optimizing the heliostat width, heliostat height and heliostat coordinate, the annual average output thermal power can be maximized while meeting the rated power. The heliostat field is distributed in a circular shape. As the seasons change, the light intensity received by the heliostat field is uneven, so the optical efficiency of the heliostats is also different. We simplify the heliostat field into S area (area with higher optical efficiency) and W area (area with lower optical efficiency) based on the optical efficiency distribution of heliostats. At different locations, According to the heliostat width, heliostat height and heliostat coordinate generated by random functions, substituting these parameters into the efficiency model in this paper, and the random search algorithm is used to traverse the maximum annual output thermal power and the corresponding heliostat parameters. In the shadow occlusion loss model, we have grid to set up the heliostat and use the coordinate conversion to solve the shadow occlusion loss efficiency.

The posit number system, which is proposed as a replacement of IEEE floating-point numbers, is in the spotlight of Arithmetic research due to the recent breakthroughs. This format claims to provide more accurate results with the same bitwidth than standard floating point, but the run-time variability during the detection of the posit fields involves a hardware design challenge. In this work, we propose parameterized designs for multiple posit functional units, including addition and multiplication, and integrate them as templates of the FloPoCo framework. The integration of the proposed algorithms within FloPoCo can provide synthesizable VHDL code for posit arithmetic of any possible configuration 〈n, es〉. Experiments show an improvement in terms of area and energy with respect to state-of-the-art works up to 35.9% and 30.8%, respectively.

Quantum Computing allows for substantial speed-ups e.g. for integer factorization or database search, compared to conventional computation. However, since real quantum computers are an emerging technology, a significant amount of research in this domain still relies on simulations of quantum computations on conventional machines. This paper proposes a containerized environment to simulate quantum circuits, making this environment quick and easy to share within research teams. Also test the environment implementing an arithmetic circuit (Vedral’s adder) and compares the performance of two of the current more used environments: IBM QISKit and Google Cirq. ©2020 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS)

Foam bed flotation processes are common in the poly metallic, potash and food industries. A worker who visually assesses the condition of the foam bed controls the process. This reduces process control and product quality because of the human factor. Using computer vision is based on bubble boundary recognition to control due to poor lighting, low foam contrast, and splash back. Recognition is possible by analyzing the glare from the foam surface. We attempt to improve recognition by accounting for the dark antiglare that takes place due to the bubble deformation. It improved recognition and reduced the noise of the method to a few percents. © 2022 IEEE.

Object pose estimation is a fundamental computer vision problem with broad applications in augmented reality and robotics. Over the past decade, deep learning models, due to their superior accuracy and robustness, have increasingly supplanted conventional algorithms reliant on engineered point pair features. Nevertheless, several challenges persist in contemporary methods, including their dependency on labeled training data, model compactness, robustness under challenging conditions, and their ability to generalize to novel unseen objects. A recent survey discussing the progress made on different aspects of this area, outstanding challenges, and promising future directions, is missing. To fill this gap, we discuss the recent advances in deep learning-based object pose estimation, covering all three formulations of the problem, i.e., instance-level, category-level, and unseen object pose estimation. Our survey also covers multiple input data modalities, degrees-of-freedom of output poses, object properties, and downstream tasks, providing the readers with a holistic understanding of this field. Additionally, it discusses training paradigms of different domains, inference modes, application areas, evaluation metrics, and benchmark datasets, as well as reports the performance of current state-of-the-art methods on these benchmarks, thereby facilitating the readers in selecting the most suitable method for their application. Finally, the survey identifies key challenges, reviews the prevailing trends along with their pros and cons, and identifies promising directions for future research. Typically, grid-connected wind turbines equipped with permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) present a back-to-back power converter based on voltage-source converters. In this paper, this structure is modified using an uncontrolled rectifier for the AC/DC conversion in the generator, and a quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI) at the grid side. The qZSI is an attractive solution to boost and convert DC voltage to AC in a single stage. The main objective of the paper is the application of a qZSI for large grid-connected wind energy systems. In this configuration, active and reactive powers can be controlled through a Space Vector Modulation technique adapted for Z-source converter. Simulations were performed using MATLAB/Simulink® with wind and load variations to confirm the proper functioning of the proposed controllers. The results showed satisfactory responses of the proposed 5 MW PMSG-driven grid-connected wind turbine. © 2020 IEEE.
