Intertidal mudflats are among the most productive coastal ecosystems, largely because of the activity of the photosynthetic microbial community on the sediment surface, known as microphytobenthos (MPB). While the dynamics of MPB have been extensively studied in temperate estuaries, there is limited research in tropical estuaries. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the spatio-temporal dynamics of MPB in the Nicoya Gulf (Costa Rica), one of the world's most productive tropical estuaries, using Sentinel-2 images at 10 m spatial resolution from 2018 to 2022. We used Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values ranging from 0 to 0.4 to monitor MPB cover and growth rates (µNDVI, days-1). Analysis of data using Generalized Additive Models (GAM) showed that up to 62% of the temporal variability in average MPB NDVI, peaking in late wet and early dry seasons (November-December), can be explained by years and months. The high temperatures and irradiance during the dry season (December to April) in the Nicoya estuary may inhibit MPB growth, contrasting with patterns observed in temperate estuaries. We observed higher MPB NDVI in the upper intertidal zone (mean sea level > 0.5 m) as usually occurs in temperate estuaries. This research highlights the importance of high-resolution satellite imagery for long-term monitoring of MPB dynamics in tropical tidal flats, crucial for accurate evaluation of global carbon cycling and ecosystem services. © 2024, The Authors. The control of polymer waste recycling process is an important modern problem. A partial solution to the problem can be got by using coextrusion technology. As a result of its application with respect to polymer waste, we can get a multilayer qualitative product, containing waste and safe for usage. Because of economic causes, the problem of using this technology is the correct preparation of secondary coextrusion composition based on the requirements to the quality of the obtained product. The scientific paper presents the mathematical control model of secondary polymer composition preparation. The developed model allows carrying out an operational control of composition components consumption, determining and correcting the consumption of the most expensive astringent component in order to guarantee the required quality of the product. The mathematical model is the basis for construction of intellectual automated systems for controlling polymer waste recycling process by coextrusion technology. © 2020 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Comparative studies across species, such as primates in this work, reveal the shared structural or functional patterns that might be inherited from the common ancestors and the specific ones that might be related to individualized evolution strategies. Both the shared or specific patterns could help promote the understanding of mechanisms of brain structural and functional architectures and brain dynamics. Many previous studies can be found to report the comparative results on species pairs. However, very few studies were found to perform a comparison of large-scale connectomes across multiple species via a data-driven method. To this end, we construct brain connectomes for three primates, macaque, chimpanzee and human, by using Brodmann areas as graphic nodes and diffusion MRI derived white matter fibers to define edges and edge weights. On these connectomes, a novel dirty multi-task regression method is developed in the attempt to automatically identified the species-shared and -specific connections. The concordance of the findings via our method and previous reports demonstrate the effectiveness and the promise of this framework. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Template-based posit multiplication for training and inferring in neural networks

The posit number system is arguably the most promising and discussed topic in Arithmetic nowadays. The recent breakthroughs claimed by the format proposed by John L. Gustafson have put posits in the spotlight. In this work, we first describe an algorithm for multiplying two posit numbers, even when the number of exponent bits is zero. This configuration, scarcely tackled in literature, is particularly interesting because it allows the deployment of a fast sigmoid function. The proposed multiplication algorithm is then integrated as a template into the well-known FloPoCo framework. Synthesis results are shown to compare with the floating point multiplication offered by FloPoCo as well. Second, the performance of posits is studied in the scenario of Neural Networks in both training and inference stages. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that training is done with posit format, achieving promising results for a binary classification problem even with reduced posit configurations. In the inference stage, 8-bit posits are as good as floating point when dealing with the MNIST dataset, but lose some accuracy with CIFAR-10. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Teeth segmentation and recognition are critical in various dental applications and dental diagnosis. Automatic and accurate segmentation approaches have been made possible by integrating deep learning models. Although teeth segmentation has been studied in the past, only some techniques were able to effectively classify and segment teeth simultaneously. This article offers a pipeline of two deep learning models, U-Net and YOLOv8, which results in BB-UNet, a new architecture for the classification and segmentation of teeth on panoramic X-rays that is efficient and reliable. We have improved the quality and reliability of teeth segmentation by utilising the YOLOv8 and U-Net capabilities. The proposed networks have been evaluated using the mean average precision (mAP) and dice coefficient for YOLOv8 and BB-UNet, respectively. We have achieved a 3% increase in mAP score for teeth classification compared to existing methods, and a 10-15% increase in dice coefficient for teeth segmentation compared to U-Net across different categories of teeth. A new Dental dataset was created based on UFBA-UESC dataset with Bounding-Box and Polygon annotations of 425 dental panoramic X-rays. The findings of this research pave the way for a wider adoption of object detection models in the field of dental diagnosis. © 2024, CC BY.

Video super-resolution is one of the most popular tasks on mobile devices, being widely used for an automatic improvement of lowbitrate and low-resolution video streams. While numerous solutions have been proposed for this problem, they are usually quite computationally demanding, demonstrating low FPS rates and power efficiency on mobile devices. In this Mobile AI challenge, we address this problem and propose the participants to design an end-to-end real-time video super-resolution solution for mobile NPUs optimized for low energy consumption. The participants were provided with the REDS training dataset containing video sequences for a 4X video upscaling task. The runtime and power efficiency of all models was evaluated on the powerful MediaTek Dimensity 9000 platform with a dedicated AI processing unit capable of accelerating floating-point and quantized neural networks. All proposed solutions are fully compatible with the above NPU, demonstrating an up to 500 FPS rate and 0.2 [Watt/30 FPS] power consumption. In the last two decades, Interactive White Boards (IWBs) have been widely available as a pedagogic tool. The usability of these boards for teaching disciplines where complex drawings are needed, we consider debatable in multiple regards. In a previous study, we proposed an alternative to the IWBs as a blackboard augmented with a minimum of necessary digital elements. The current study continues our previous research on hybrid design tools, analyzing the limitations of the developed hybrid system regarding the perceived quality of the images being repeatedly captured, annotated, and reprojected onto the board. We validated the hybrid system by evaluating the quality of the projected and reprojected images over a blackboard, using both objective measurements and subjective human perception in extensive and realistic case studies. Based on the results achieved in the current research, we conclude that the proposed hybrid system provides good quality support for teaching disciplines that require complex drawings and board interaction. This paper proposes a mechanism to accelerate and optimize the energy consumption of a face detection software based on Haar-like cascading classifiers, taking advantage of the features of low-cost asymmetric multicore processors (AMPs) with limited power budget. A modelling and task scheduling/allocation is proposed in order to efficiently make use of the existing features on big. LITTLE ARM processors, including (1) source-code adaptation for parallel computing, which enables code acceleration by applying the OmpSs programming model, a task-based programming model that handles data-dependencies between tasks in a transparent fashion;(2) different OmpSs task allocation policies which take into account the processor asymmetry and can dynamically set processing resources in a more efficient way based on their particular features. The proposed mechanism can be efficiently applied to take advantage of the processing elements existing on low-cost and low-energy multi-core embedded devices executing object detection algorithms based on cascading classifiers. Although these classifiers yield the best results for detection algorithms in the field of computer vision, their high computational requirements prevent them from being used on these devices under real-time requirements. Finally, we compare the energy efficiency of a heterogeneous architecture based on AMPs with a suitable task scheduling with that of a homogeneous symmetric architecture. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The Discrete EVent System Specification (DEVS) formalism provides a unified method to define any discrete-event system accurately. As the complexity of the system under study increases, the necessity of simulation engines with higher performance rises. In this research, we present a chained DEVS simulator, a DEVS-compliant, function-oriented simulation algorithm that exploits shared memory patterns to improve the performance of sequential and parallel simulations. We also illustrate the positive impact of this novel approach executing a set of DEVStone synthetic benchmarks and comparing a state-of-the-art simulation engine with an updated version that implements the chained algorithm. Results show that the chained simulator introduces up to 40% less synchronization overhead than the traditional simulation approach.
