HAFNI-enabled largescale platform for neuroimaging informatics (HELPNI)

Tremendous efforts have thus been devoted on the establishment of functional MRI informatics systems that recruit a comprehensive collection of statistical/computational approaches for fMRI data analysis. However, the state-of-the-art fMRI informatics systems are especially designed for specific fMRI sessions or studies of which the data size is not really big, and thus has difficulty in handling fMRI ‘big data.’ Given the size of fMRI data are growing explosively recently due to the advancement of neuroimaging technologies, an effective and efficient fMRI informatics system which can process and analyze fMRI big data is much needed. To address this challenge, in this work, we introduce our newly developed informatics platform, namely, ‘HAFNI-enabled largescale platform for neuroimaging informatics (HELPNI).’ HELPNI implements our recently developed computational framework of sparse representation of whole-brain fMRI signals which is called holistic atlases of functional networks and interactions (HAFNI) for fMRI data analysis. HELPNI provides integrated solutions to archive and process large-scale fMRI data automatically and structurally, to extract and visualize meaningful results information from raw fMRI data, and to share open-access processed and raw data with other collaborators through web. We tested the proposed HELPNI platform using publicly available 1000 Functional Connectomes dataset including over 1200 subjects. We identified consistent and meaningful functional brain networks across individuals and populations based on resting state fMRI (rsfMRI) big data. Using efficient sampling module, the experimental results demonstrate that our HELPNI system has superior performance than other systems for large-scale fMRI data in terms of processing and storing the data and associated results much faster. © 2015, The Author(s).

It is an important task to improve performance for sparse matrix vector multiplication （SpMV）, and it is a difficult task because of its irregular memory access. Gen- eral purpose GPU （GPGPU） provides high computing abil- ity and substantial bandwidth that cannot be fully exploited by SpMV due to its irregularity. In this paper, we propose two novel methods to optimize the memory bandwidth for SpMV on GPGPU. First, a new storage format is proposed to exploit memory bandwidth of GPU architecture more effi- ciently. The new storage format can ensure that there are as many non-zeros as possible in the format which is suitable to exploit the memory bandwidth of the GPU. Second, we pro- pose a cache blocking method to improve the performance of SpMV on GPU architecture. The sparse matrix is partitioned into sub-blocks that are stored in CSR format. With the block- ing method, the corresponding part of vector x can be reused in the GPU cache, so the time to access the global memory for vector x is reduced heavily. Experiments are carried out on three GPU platforms, GeForce 9800 GX2, GeForce GTX 480, and Tesla K40. Experimental results show that both new methods can efficiently improve the utilization of GPU mem- ory bandwidth and the performance of the GPU.

Resistance loss is one of the main parameters in the designing of slurry pipeline transportation,how to predict calculation accurately is an extremely important *** this paper,aiming at long-distance characteristics of iron concentrate slurry pipeline transportation,a new model based on the modified parameters of Fei Xiangjun resistance loss model and Durand resistance loss model was put forward,the modified model made a comparative analysis between data measured at the scene and results calculated in two models mentioned *** results show that the calculation results of the resistance loss using modified Fei Xiangjun are more accurate in the real operation ***,slurry flow rate and the concentration are both factors that would affect the pipe resistance loss were deeply discussed,which can give a reference in the designing of pipeline transportation.

Developing new imaging methods needs to establish some proofs of concept before implementing them on real-time scenarios. Nowadays, the high computational power reached by multi-core CPUs and GPUs have driven the development of software-based beamformers. Taking this into account, a library for the fast generation of ultrasound images is presented. It is based on Synthetic Aperture Imaging Techniques(SAFT) and it is fast because of the use of parallel computing techniques. Any kind of transducers as well as SAFT techniques can be defined although it includes some pre-built SAFT methods like 2R-SAFT and TFM. Furthermore, 2D and 3D imaging(slicebased or full volume computation) is supported along with the ability to generate both rectangular and angular images. For interpolation, linear and polynomial schemes can be chosen. The versatility of the library is ensured by interfacing it to Matlab, Python and any programming language over different operating systems. On a standard PC equipped with a single NVIDIA Quadro 4000(256 cores), the library is able to calculate 262,144 pixels in ≈105 ms using a linear transducer with 64 elements, and 2,097,152 voxels in ≈ 5 seconds using a matrix transducer with 121 elements when TFM is applied.

SRAM based memory systems are plagued by a number of problems like sub-threshold leakage and susceptibility to read/write failure with dynamic voltage scaling schemes or low supply voltage. Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) technologies are being explored extensively nowadays to replace the conventional SRAM memories even for level 1 (L1) caches. These NVMs like Spin Torque Transfer RAM (STT-MRAM), Resistive-RAM (ReRAM) and Phase Change RAM (PRAM) are less hindered by leakage problems with technology scaling and consume lesser area. However, simple replacement of SRAM by NVMs is not a viable option due to their write related issues. The main focus of this paper is the exploration of write delay and write energy issues in a NVM based L1 Instruction cache (I-cache) for an ARM like single core system. We propose a NVM I-cache and extend its MSHR (Miss Status Handling Register) functionality to address the NVMs write related issues. According to our simulations, appropriate tuning of selective architecture parameters can reduce the performance penalty introduced by the NVM (∼45%) to extremely tolerable levels (∼1%) and show energy gains up to 35%. Furthermore, on configuring our modified NVM based system to occupy area comparable to the original SRAM-based configuration, it outperforms the SRAM baseline and leads to even more energy savings. © 2014 EDAA.

In this paper, we develop a fast implementation of an hyperspectral coded aperture (HYCA) algorithm on different platforms using OpenCL, an open standard for parallel programming on heterogeneous systems, which includes a wide variety of devices, from dense multicore systems from major manufactures such as Intel or ARM to new accelerators such as graphics processing units (GPUs), field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), the Intel Xeon Phi and other custom devices. Our proposed implementation of HYCA significantly reduces its computational cost. Our experiments have been conducted using simulated data and reveal considerable acceleration factors. This kind of implementations with the same descriptive language on different architectures are very important in order to really calibrate the possibility of using heterogeneous platforms for efficient hyperspectral imaging processing in real remote sensing missions.

Point matching is a problem of finding the optimum matching between two sets of key points which are extracted from the surfaces of objects. A popular approach represents the features of a set of points with a graph model. Traditionally, the measurement applied in the graph model is the Euclidian distance, which is not suitable for objects with non-rigid deformations. In this paper, we propose a novel graph model called the geodesic graph model (GGM) which uses a geodesic-like distance as its measurement. GGM can better tackle non-rigid deformations because the geodesic-like distance is a kind of invariant structural feature during non-rigid deformations. The building process of the GGM is justified under the assumption that all the key points are spanning on a manifold. To further handle the deviations of key point locations, we come up with a feature weighting process to increase our algorithm's robustness. We conduct several experiments on different kinds of deformations over several widely used datasets. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm.
