The present work describes a reliable improved gradient optical flow estimation system using FPGAs. This structure is based on space-temporal processing and the use of steerable filters. This model can be enhanced using psychophysical and bioinspired properties according to biological vision in order to mimic the singularity and the performance of mammalians. Experimental results and the resources used to analyze the associate customizability of the system are discussed.

The domain knowledge has a direct impact on the result of question - answering (Q & A) in the restricted domain Question Answering System (QA). In this paper, a method of answer extraction for domain Chinese question-and-answer (Q&A) is proposed, which based on the analysis of interrogative sentence and the answer type, carrying on the text retrieval with the help of the domain knowledge and obtaining the relevant paragraphs of the question as the candidate answer. For the question of numeral or list entity type, extracted the question center related domain entity as the answers by adopting the naming entity recognition. For the definition questions, the sentences or paragraphs with higher relevance can be extracted to become the answer based on the relevance ranking between the candidate sentences or paragraphs and questions by combined the computing method of keywords weighting and the method of semantic similarity between the sentences and questions. Experimented on the answer extraction in Yunnan tourism domain, the results show that more remarkable effects have been achieved by adopting the method of answer extraction from domain Chinese question-and-answer. © 2009 IEEE.

Three-dimensional (3D) circuits reduce communication delay in multicore SoCs, and enable efficient integration of cores, memories, sensors, and RF devices. However, vertical integration of layers exacerbates the reliability and thermal problems, and cooling efficiency becomes a limiting factor. Liquid cooling is a solution to overcome the accelerated thermal problems imposed by multi-layer architectures. In this paper, we first provide a 3D thermal simulation model including liquid cooling, supporting both fixed and variable fluid injection rates. Our model has been integrated in HotSpot to study the impact on multicore SoCs. We design and evaluate several dynamic management policies that complement liquid cooling. Our results for 3D multicore SoCs, which are based on 3D versions of UltraSPARC T1, show that thermal management approaches that combine liquid cooling with proactive task allocation are extremely effective in preventing temperature problems. Our proactive management technique provides an additional 75% average reduction in hot spots in comparison to applying only liquid cooling. Furthermore, for systems capable of varying the coolant flow rate at runtime, our feedback controller increases the improvement to 95% on average.

Technology scaling has caused the feature sizes to shrink continuously, whereas interconnects, unlike transistors, have not followed the same trend. Designing 3D stack architectures is a recently proposed approach to overcome the power consumption and delay problems associated with the interconnects by reducing the length of the wires going across the chip. However, 3D integration introduces serious thermal challenges due to the high power density resulting from placing computational units on top of each other. In this work, we first investigate how the existing thermal management, power management and job scheduling policies affect the thermal behavior in 3D chips. We then propose a dynamic thermally-aware job scheduling technique for 3D systems to reduce the thermal problems at very low performance cost. Our approach can also be integrated with power management policies to reduce energy consumption while avoiding the thermal hot spots and large temperature variations.

Grid Resource Discovery Service is a fundamental problem that has been the focus of research in the recent past. We propose a scheme that presents essential characteristics for efficient, self-configuring and fault-tolerant resource discovery able to handle dynamic attributes such as memory capacity. Our approach consists of an overlay network with a hypercube topology connecting the grid nodes and a scalable, fault-tolerant, self-configuring search algorithm. By design, the algorithm improves the probability of reaching all working nodes in the system, even in the presence of non-alive nodes (inaccessible, crashed or nodes loaded by heavy traffic). We analyze the static resilience of the approach presented, which is the measure of how well the algorithm can discover resources without having to update the routing tables. The results show that the presented approach has significantly high static resilience. © 2008, University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. All rights reserved.

The disciplines of modeling and simulation are essential to the study of complex systems. The Department of Systems Engineering and automation and computer architecture at the University of La Laguna has been developing a Java simulation library for Discrete Event Systems (SIGHOS). SIGHOS is intended to be used as part of tools that analyze the effects of proposed solutions on real problems. Using this library, however, requires programming skills which limit its effectiveness. In this paper we propose the introduction of a logic layer that separates the low-level simulation mechanisms of the modeling system. We achieve this through the creation of a web service that can run the simulation remotely via the Internet using SIGHOS. We then describe a service-oriented web application that encompasses a modeling and simulation environment through which a user can create models, process them (using the aforementioned web service), and observe the results without any knowledge of programming.

Discrete Event Simulation (DES) in healthcare modeling has been an active research area for many years. However one of the drawbacks of this method is the need for meaningful data for building valid models. This paper discusses Hospital Activity Data Analysis (HADA) which is software specifically designed to be used with a generic hospital simulation model (DGHPSim). The DGHPSim model is built for UK healthcare system and is presented conceptually in this paper. HADA integrates with raw data from different sources to evaluate a hospital's past performance. Its results can be used by hospital managers for statistical inference and general understanding, and by DGHPSim users for estimating appropriate parameters of the simulation models. As well as its use in DGHPSim HADA is well-suited to be generically used for any patient-flow type hospital simulation models.

Particle swarm optimisation of memory usage in embedded systems

In this paper, we propose a dynamic, non-dominated sorting, multi-objective particle-swarm-based optimiser, named hierarchical non-dominated sorting particle swarm optimiser (H-NSPSO), for memory usage optimisation in embedded systems. It significantly reduces the computational complexity of others multi- objective particle swarm optimisation (MOPSO) algorithms. Concretely, it first uses a fast non-dominated sorting approach with O(mN2) computational complexity. Second, it maintains an external archive to store a fixed number of non-dominated particles, which is used to drive the particle population towards the best non-dominated set over many iteration steps. Finally, the proposed algorithm separates particles into multi sub-swarms, building several tree networks as the neighbourhood topology. H-NSPSO has been made adaptive in nature by allowing its vital parameters (inertia weight and learning factors) to change within iterations. The method is evaluated using two real world examples in embedded applications and compared with existing covering methods. Copyright © 2008, Inderscience Publishers.

New multimedia embedded applications are increasingly dynamic, and rely on Dynamically-allocated Data Types (DDTs) to store their data. The optimization of DDTs for each target embedded system is a time-consuming process due to the large design space of possible DDTs implementations. Thus, suitable exploration methods for embedded design metrics (memory accesses, memory usage and power consumption) need to be developed. In this work we present a detailed analysis of the characteristics of different types of Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) to tackle the optimization of DDTs in multimedia applications and compare them with other state-of-the-art heuristics. Our results with state-of-the-art MOEAs in two object-oriented multi-media embedded applications show that more sophisticated MOEAs (SPEA2 and NSGA-II) offer better solutions than simple schemes (VEGA). Moreover, the suitable sophisticated scheme varies according to the available exploration time, namely, NSGA-II outperforms SPEA2 in the first set of solutions (300-500 generations), while SPEA2 offers better solutions afterwards.
