HGRID: A Self-configuring Grid Resource Discovery

Grid Resource Discovery Service is a fundamental problem that has been the focus of research in the recent past. We propose a scheme that presents essential characteristics for efficient, self-configuring and fault-tolerant resource discovery able to handle dynamic attributes such as memory capacity. Our approach consists of an overlay network with a hypercube topology connecting the grid nodes and a scalable, fault-tolerant, self-configuring search algorithm. By design, the algorithm improves the probability of reaching all working nodes in the system, even in the presence of non-alive nodes (inaccessible, crashed or nodes loaded by heavy traffic). We analyze the static resilience of the approach presented, which is the measure of how well the algorithm can discover resources without having to update the routing tables. Motion Computation, also called Optical Flow, consists of measuring the motion of an entity attending to the modulus (how fast) and the phase (direction) of its movement. There are a plethora of different models and algorithms whereas none of them cover all problems associated to the real world. Our contribution presents a novel customizable architecture, including resource usage and performance, of a neuromorphic robust optical flow adjustable platform, although its main drawback is the elevated computational complexity. Bioinspiration and robustness properties of the final system provides an extended set of applications fields.

New multimedia embedded applications are increasingly dynamic, and rely on Dynamically-allocated Data Types (DDTs) to store their data. The optimization of DDTs for each target embedded system is a time-consuming process due to the large searching space of possible DDTs implementations. This results in the minimization of embedded design variables (memory accesses, power consumption and memory usage). Till date some effective heuristic algorithms have been developed in order to solve this problem, however unreported, as the problem is NP-complete and cannot be fully explored. In these cases the use of parallel processing can be very useful because it allows not only to explore more solutions spending the same time but also to implement new algorithms. This research work provides a methodology to use Discrete Event Systems Specification (DEVS) to implement a parallel evolutionary algorithm within a Service Oriented architecture (SOA), where parallelism improves the solutions found by the corresponding sequential algorithm. This algorithm provides better results when compared with other previously proposed procedures. In order to implement the parallelism the DEVS/SOA framework in utilized. Experimental results show how a novel parallel multi-objective genetic algorithm, which combines NSGA-II and SPEA2, allows designers to reach a larger number of solutions than previous approximations. This research also establishes DEVS/SOA as a platform for conducting complex distributed simulation experiments. © 2008 Association for Computing Machinery. All rights reserved.

This paper presents significant improvements to previous watermarking technique for intellectual property protection (IPP) of IP cores. The technique relies on hosting the bits of a digital signature at the HDL design level using resources included within the original system. The technique also includes a procedure for secure signature extraction requiring minimal modifications to the system. The new advances refer to increasing the applicability of this watermarking technique to any design and the provision of an automatic tool for signature hosting that, in addition to easy the signature hosting, leads to reduced area penalties. Synthesis results show that the application of the proposed watermarking strategy results in negligible degradation of system performance and very low area penalties.

Particle swarm optimisation of memory usage in embedded systems

In this paper, we propose a dynamic, non-dominated sorting, multi-objective particle-swarm-based optimiser, named hierarchical non-dominated sorting particle swarm optimiser (H-NSPSO), for memory usage optimisation in embedded systems. It significantly reduces the computational complexity of others multi- objective particle swarm optimisation (MOPSO) algorithms. Concretely, it first uses a fast non-dominated sorting approach with O(mN2) computational complexity. Second, it maintains an external archive to store a fixed number of non-dominated particles, which is used to drive the particle population towards the best non-dominated set over many iteration steps. Finally, the proposed algorithm separates particles into multi sub-swarms, building several tree networks as the neighbourhood topology. H-NSPSO has been made adaptive in nature by allowing its vital parameters (inertia weight and learning factors) to change within iterations. The method is evaluated using two real world examples in embedded applications and compared with existing covering methods. Copyright © 2008, Inderscience Publishers.

According to complex of gearbox test online, this paper introduces a gearbox test system based on automatic shift manipulator. Optimal shift law plays an important role in improving work efficiency and prolonging service life of gearbox. It was more intelligent that judging optimal shift by using neural network. The shift procedure was a complicated nonlinear time-varying one, involving many variables, so the expert system was used to control shift procedure. Then it was a more personification procedure owing to fast and accurate operations. Good running state of system proved success for application of neural network and expert system in product test. Moreover the system had some guiding significance in intelligent and personification control of manipulator.

Storage area networks (SANs) based on fibre channel have been used extensively in the last decade while iSCSI is fast becoming a serious contender due to its reduced costs and unified infrastructure. This work examines the performance of iSCSI with multiple TCP connections. Multiple TCP connections are often used to realize higher bandwidth but there may be no fairness in how bandwidth is distributed. We propose a mechanism to share congestion information across multiple flows in "Fair-TCP" for improved performance. Our results show that Fair-TCP significantly improves the performance for I/O intensive workloads.

Helpdesks are a fundamental component of the IT Infrastructure of any organization. A correct design and management of this service improve the performance of the whole organization. Managers are always looking for solutions which can support their decision making process. Discrete Event Simulation is becoming a widely spread tool which helps in the analysis and forecasting of the helpdesk behavior. However, the addition of some helpdesk processes, which are commonly expressed in uncertain or vague terms, could be unnecessarily complicated if only simulation is used. Fuzzy Logic can fill this hole left by simulation. This paper presents how Discrete Event Simulation and Fuzzy Logic can be used together to cope with the Quality of Service requirements of an organization.

The modeling, parameters identification, and linear and nonlinear feedback control designs of an electronic throttle control (ETC) system is considered. A commercially available ETC system made by Bosch is selected for our investigation. The unknown parameters identified are used in designing linear and nonlinear controllers. Simulations and extensive experiments were conducted. A real-time linear controller was implemented with the xPC Target. The ETC model is then extended to a separately excited nonlinear DC motor model. The nonlinear controller is designed using the input-output feedback linearization technique; the extension proves to be of solid theoretical value. The results presented in this paper can be considered as an interesting and important case study encompassing system modeling, parameters identification, linear and nonlinear controller designs, and real-time control. The techniques and methodology developed are applicable to similar and/or other types of systems.

Nature has optimized the processing of visual information, especially in primates.
