In many applications of wireless ad hoc networks, wireless nodes are owned by rational and intelligent users. In this paper, we call nodes selfish if they are owned by independent users and their only objective is to maximize their individual goals. In such situations, it may not be possible to use the existing protocols for wireless ad hoc networks as these protocols assume that nodes follow the prescribed protocol without deviation. Stimulating cooperation among these nodes is an interesting and challenging problem. Providing incentives and pricing the transactions are well known approaches to stimulate cooperation. In this paper, we present a game theoretic framework for truthful broadcast protocol and strategy proof pricing mechanism called immediate predecessor node pricing mechanism (IPNPM). The phrase strategy proof here means that truth revelation of cost is a weakly dominant-strategy (in game theoretic terms) for each node. In order to steer our mechanism-design approach towards practical implementation, we compute the payments to nodes using a distributed algorithm. We also propose a new protocol for broadcast in wireless ad hoc network with selfish nodes based on IPNPM. The features of the proposed broadcast protocol are reliability and a significantly reduced number of packet forwards compared to the number of network nodes, which in turn leads to less system-wide power consumption to broadcast a single packet. Our simulation results show the efficacy of the proposed broadcast protocol

A study on the possibility of thermoelectric heating/cooling in buildings

This paper presents a study on the use of thermoelectric heating and cooling in buildings. The system, called Smart Wall, consists of thermoelectric (TE) modules, a power supply (including a rechargeable battery and an AC power rectifier), a water circulation system, and a computer control system. Smart Wall has three functions: heating, cooling, and power generation. To improve its coefficient of performance (COP), it uses the so-called symbiotic generation to maximize the energy usage. In order to investigate the performance of Smart Wall, a theoretical model is first developed. Based on computer simulation, it is found that under a typical condition, Smart Wall can achieve a COP of 0.605 for cooling and 0.875 for heating. A small experiment model of 1.8m × 1.2m × 0.4m is also built. The experiment result confirms the simulation results. Because Smart Wall is clean, quiet, and safe, if the COP can be further improved the system would have great potential in the future.

Current and emerging manufacturing and logistics systems are posing new challenges and opportunities for the automation and control community. This milestone report describes the main problems, such as management of complexity, scalability, increasing costs, coordination, market-based resource allocation, and more. Recent accomplishments and trends are discussed: Control and automation techniques, manufacturing plant automation, collaborative control through integration and networking, and control methods applied to extended enterprises and large-scale critical infrastructure. Finally, forecasts are presented for the next generation manufacturing system;e-work;integration, coordination and collaboration;networked, distributed decision support (NDSS);and active middleware. The development of intelligent building and the network technology involved were introduced. The scheme of remote monitoring and control system of intelligent building based on LonWorks and Web was presented. The framework and working principle were analyzed. The key technology involved was studied. A prototype system was established according to the above scheme. The results of experiment show that the system works well.

Deformable models have been intensively studied in image analysis through the last decade, and are used for detection and recognition of flexible or rigid templates under diverse viewing conditions. Genetic algorithm (GA) based deformable models are used for generic visual landmark detection and interpretation. The developed system allows topologic localization and navigation using natural and artificial landmarks, exploiting deformable models' ability for handling landmark perspective variations. The resulting perception module has been integrated successfully in a complex navigation system. Various experimental results in real environments are presented on this paper, showing the effectiveness and capacity of the landmark detection and reading system.

Dynamically reconfigurable architectures are emerging as a viable design alternative to implement a wide range of computationally intensive applications. At the same time, an urgent necessity has arisen for support tool development to automate the design process and achieve optimal exploitation of the architectural features of the system. Task scheduling and context (configuration) management become very critical issues in achieving the high performance that digital signal processing (DSP) and multimedia applications demand. This article proposes a strategy to automate the design process which considers all possible optimizations that can be carried out at compilation time, regarding context and data transfers. This strategy is general in nature and could be applied to different reconfigurable systems. We also discuss the key aspects of the scheduling problem in a reconfigurable architecture such as MorphoSys. In particular, we focus on a task scheduling methodology for DSP and multimedia applications, as well as the context management and scheduling optimizations.

COLARADO (an acronym for collision avoidance radar able to distinguish obstacles) is a system for use in the control of autonomously driven vehicles, having static radar antennas. By combining the echos, resulting from 2 continuously emitting transmitters and 3 receivers, it is possible to compute the locations of obstacles in 3 dimensions. The main problem is to separate the real obstacles from ghosts amongst noise and clutter, up to a distance of 12.8 m. This paper discusses the signal processing algorithms as well as the related real-time parallel computer hardware and system software. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

The phase ordering of register allocation and instruction scheduling in a compiler and their integration have been well studied for in-order issue and VLIW processors. In this paper we study this problem in the context of out-of-order issue processors. Such a study is interesting as the dynamic instruction ordering and register renaming support mechanisms in out-of-order issue processors are similar in spirit to what the complex register allocation and instruction scheduling techniques do at compile-time. We evaluated four existing techniques, namely postpass scheduling, prepass scheduling, parallel interference graph, and integrated prepass scheduling methods. Our initial experimental results reveal that for o-o-o issue processors the focus should be on reducing the register pressure/spill code than exposing the parallelism at compiling time.
