The imminent advent of Quantum computers poses a significant threat to the cryptographic algorithms supporting the public key infrastructure (PKI) of widely used communication protocols. High Performance Computing (HPC) data centers among other interested parties are well aware of the catastrophic consequences quantum attacks could have on their PKI and are consequently transitioning to Post-Quantum Cryptographic (PQC) methods, despite the substantial overhead this introduces for handling incoming network packets. This work addresses the transition to PQC within the context of the Cloud-Edge Continuum by integrating the Open Quantum Safe (OQS) library into the accelerated strongSwan developed by Mellanox for Data Processing Units (DPUs). This integration offloads cryptographic operations from central servers to data DPUs distributed across the cloud-edge continuum. Our solution ensures quantum security by providing PQ authentication through CRYSTALS-Dilithium or CRYSTALS-FALCON, PQ key exchanges via CRYSTALS-Kyber, and confidential data transmission using AES-256. Additionally, the deployment of this implementation on DPUs helps reduce the computational load on both HPC data centers and edge devices, promoting more efficient and secure operations across the entire cloud-edge continuum.

The transition of healthcare towards digitalization is closely related to the advancement of health-related technologies, including wearable sensors and edge computing. In this paper, we present VersaSens, a versatile and customizable platform concept and its real implementation as a tool to boost research in wearable sensors. The platform embodies the core attributes of the VersaSens concept: versatility, flexibility, and extendability across multiple aspects of hardware, software, and processing components. It features a modular design, consisting of sensor, processor, and co-processor modules, allowing for various configurations. To evaluate the efficiency of the platform, we tested three use cases: cough monitoring, heartbeat classification and epileptic seizure detection. In all cases, the results indicate that the platform effectively executes the applications, achieving low energy consumption. In particular, our findings indicates that the integration of a domain-specific edge-AI co-processor [i.e., HEEP ocrates (Machetti et al., 2024)] equipped with several hardware accelerators further improved the overall execution time and energy consumption of the system. These results demonstrate the potential of VersaSens to effectively support a diverse range of edge-AI applications and configurations, thereby providing a robust foundation for the research and development of novel smart wearable sensor systems.

In response to the challenge of comprehensively security assessment and analysis in existing mobile networks from both upper-layer services and network transmission levels, A SDN-based security assessment model for transmission and service security in mobile networks (SAMTS) is proposed. This model introduces security assessment algorithms, in which static configuration information and dynamic abnormal information are considered comprehensively to judge the trend and the risk degree of attack when evaluating the security of network nodes. Meanwhile, the node importance of service orientation and transmission is integrated for security evaluation. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation and comparison experiments, demonstrating its higher evaluation accuracy compared with similar algorithms.

Cloud infrastructure provides rapid resource provision for on-demand computational requirements. Cloud simulation environments today are largely employed to model and simulate complex systems for remote accessibility and variable capacity requirements. In this regard, scalability issues in Modeling and Simulation (M&S) computational requirements can be tackled through the elasticity of on-demand Cloud deployment. However, implementing a high performance cloud M&S framework following these elastic principles is not a trivial task as parallelizing and distributing existing architectures is challenging. Indeed, both the parallel and distributed M&S developments have evolved following separate ways. Parallel solutions has always been focused on ad-hoc solutions, while distributed approaches, on the other hand, have led to the definition of standard distributed frameworks like the High Level architecture (HLA) or influenced the use of distributed technologies like the Message Passing Interface (MPI). Only a few developments have been able to evolve with the current resilience of computing hardware resources deployment, largely focused on the implementation of Simulation as a Service (SaaS), albeit independently of the parallel ad-hoc methods branch. In this paper, we present a unified parallel and distributed M&S architecture with enough flexibility to deploy parallel and distributed simulations in the Cloud with a low effort, without modifying the underlying model source code, and reaching important speedups against the sequential simulation, especially in the parallel implementation. Our framework is based on the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) formalism. The performance of the parallel and distributed framework is tested using the xDEVS M&S tool, Application Programming Interface (API) and the DEVStone benchmark with up to eight computing nodes, obtaining maximum speedups of 15.95× and 1.84×, respectively. © 2023, CC BY-SA.

Resilient source seeking with robot swarms

We present a solution for locating the source, or maximum, of an unknown scalar field using a swarm of mobile robots. Unlike relying on the traditional gradient information, the swarm determines an ascending direction to approach the source with arbitrary precision. The ascending direction is calculated from field strength measurements at the robot locations and their relative positions concerning the swarm centroid. Rather than focusing on individual robots, we focus the analysis on the density of robots per unit area to guarantee a more resilient swarm, i.e., the functionality remains even if individuals go missing or are misplaced during the mission. We reinforce the algorithm’s robustness by providing sufficient conditions for the swarm shape so that the ascending direction is almost parallel to the gradient. The swarm can respond to an unexpected environment by morphing its shape and exploiting the existence of multiple ascending directions. Finally, we validate our approach numerically with hundreds of robots. The fact that a large number of robots with a generic formation always calculate an ascending direction compensates for the potential loss of individuals. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. In the last decade, the Internet of Things paradigm has caused an exponential increase in the number of connected devices. This trend brings the Internet closer to everyday activities and enables data collection that can be used to create and improve a great variety of services and applications. Despite its great benefits, this paradigm also comes with several challenges. More powerful storage and processing capabilities are required to service all these devices. Additionally, the need to deploy and manage the infrastructure to efficiently support these resources continues to pose a challenge. Modeling and simulation can help to design and analyze these scenarios, providing flexible and powerful mechanisms to study and compare different strategies and infrastructures. In this scenario, Micro Data Centers (MDCs) can be used as an effective way of reducing overwhelmed Cloud Data Center infrastructures. This paper explores an M&S methodology to study the overall power consumption of a healthcare IoT scenario. The patients wear non-intrusive monitoring devices that periodically generate tasks to be executed in MDCs. We extract the layout of existing urban infrastructures, simulate the monitored population's behavior, and compare the power consumption of several data center configurations. © 2023, CC BY-SA.

This work presents a novel and promising approach to the clinical management of acute stroke. Using machine learning techniques, our research has succeeded in developing accurate diagnosis and prediction real-time models from hemodynamic data. These models are able to diagnose stroke subtype with 30 minutes of monitoring, to predict the exitus during the first 3 hours of monitoring, and to predict the stroke recurrence in just 15 minutes of monitoring. Patients with difficult access to a CT scan, and all patients that arrive at the stroke unit of a specialized hospital will benefit from these positive results. The results obtained from the real-time developed models are the following: stroke diagnosis around 98% precision (97.8% Sensitivity, 99.5% Specificity), exitus prediction with 99.8% precision (99.8% Sens., 99.9% Spec.) and 98% precision predicting stroke recurrence (98% Sens., 99% Spec.). © 2023, CC BY-SA.

In order to fully harness the potential of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) in soft robots, advanced control methods are needed. An important groundwork for this is the development of a control-oriented model that can adequately describe the underlying dynamics of a DEA. A common feature of existing models is that always custom-made DEAs were investigated. This makes the modelling process easier, as all specifications and the structure of the actuator are well known. In the case of a commercial actuator, however, only the information from the manufacturer is available and must be checked or completed during the modelling process. The aim of this paper is to explore how a commercial stacked silicone-based DEA can be modelled and how complex the model should be to properly replicate the features of the actuator. The static description has demonstrated the suitability of Hooke's law. In the case of dynamic description, it is shown that no viscoelastic model is needed for control-oriented modelling. However, if all features of the DEA are considered, the generalized Kelvin-Maxwell model with three Maxwell elements shows good results, stability and computational efficiency. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.
