Factoring integers via Schnorr’s algorithm assisted with VQE

Current asymmetric cryptography is based on the principle that while classical computers can efficiently multiply large integers, the inverse operation, factorization, is significantly more complex. For sufficiently large integers, this factorization process can take in classical computers hundreds or even thousands of years to complete. However, there exist some quantum algorithms that might be able to factor integers theoretically - the theory works properly, but the hardware requirements are far away from what we can build nowadays - and, for instance, Yan, B. et al. ([14]) claim to have constructed a hybrid algorithm which could be able even to challenge RSA-2048 in the near future. This work analyses this article and replicates the experiments they carried out, but with a different quantum method (VQE), being able to factor the number 1961. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Prediction of symptomatic crises in chronic diseases allows to take decisions before the symptoms occur, such as the intake of drugs to avoid the symptoms or the activation of medical alarms. The prediction horizon is in this case an important parameter in order to fulfill the pharmacokinetics of medications, or the time response of medical services. This paper presents a study about the prediction limits of a chronic disease with symptomatic crises: the migraine. For that purpose, this work develops a methodology to build predictive migraine models and to improve these predictions beyond the limits of the initial models. The maximum prediction horizon is analyzed, and its dependency on the selected features is studied. A strategy for model selection is proposed to tackle the trade off between conservative but robust predictive models, with respect to less accurate predictions with higher horizons. The obtained results show a prediction horizon close to 40 minutes, which is in the time range of the drug pharmacokinetics. Experiments have been performed in a realistic scenario where input data have been acquired in an ambulatory clinical study by the deployment of a non-intrusive Wireless Body Sensor Network. Our results provide an effective methodology for the selection of the future horizon in the development of prediction algorithms for diseases experiencing symptomatic crises. © 2024, CC BY-SA.

Modern IoT applications present demanding Quality of Service (QoS) requirements that can no longer rely on a centralized solution to offload compute-intensive tasks. Edge Computing tackles these limitations by extending the Cloud to the edge of the network. However, the distributed and complex nature of Edge infrastructures introduces new technical challenges that must be addressed to develop a successful solution. Modeling, Simulation, and Optimization (M&S&O) tools can aid in the automatic design of modern Edge deployments. Here we present a decision support module that allows practitioners to automatically improve aspects of their Edge infrastructure by applying different optimization algorithms, such as simulated annealing, tabu search, and stochastic hill climbing. Furthermore, the structure of this module allows us to extend the available optimization methods if needed. We illustrate how this tool can help us to improve energy consumption policies of Edge Computing facilities and reduce their operational costs.

Analog computing is a field of study which is recovering relevance. FPAAs are the equivalent to FPGAs but in the analog domain. The FPAAs of Anadigm are well suitable for analog designs prototyping. Anadigm provides a time domain functional simulator to check the analog designs before downloading them into the FPAAs. In this paper, a weighted sum is implemented through 3 FPAAs and simulated to test performance of both the simulator and behavior in real conditions with the results that should theoretically be obtained. Results show that most of the times the difference ranges from 0.01V to 0.02V. ©2020 Society for Modeling and Simulation (SCS) International

The popularity of small wind turbines would rise in future, because of electricity prices are still growing. Next generation of small wind-turbines can have higher efficiency values. Under wind gusts and turbulences, the system should be very sensitive to wind conditions. In this work, it is presented a control system that can improve the performance of commercial small-scale wind turbines by including active pitch and load control. We show the electrical design of a smart active pitch control to increase the energy generation of micro-wind turbines ( © 2022, European Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, Environment and Power Quality (EA4EPQ). Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) can be seen as flexible capacitors, where an incompressible elastomer is sandwiched between two compliant electrodes. From the elastomer non-linear and time-dependent phenomena arise during the activation of the actuator. This results in the need for appropriate control methods, especially when they are used in the field of soft robots. Therefore, this paper presents a feedforward controller which is based on Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs). To the best of our knowledge this is the first time DEAs and SNNs are combined to make a step towards true soft robots. It was demonstrated that it is necessary to include feedback into the control scheme. Also, it was found that in the context of a SpiNN-3 development board as a neuromorphic hardware platform, neuron encoding is the most promising encoding method. This also implies that a classification approach is preferable to a regression approach.

Modeling and Simulation (M&S) techniques are extensively used for analyzing complex systems. Among different approaches, the Discrete EVent System specification (DEVS) mathematical formalism presents a robust methodology for defining complex models. The xDEVS framework is a cross-platform tool that provides a uniform Application Programming Interface (API) to simulate DEVS-based models using different programming languages like C++, Java, or Python. However, executing DEVS models on embedded devices equipped with small processors usually requires lower-level programming languages. This paper introduces xDEVS/Rust and xDEVS/C, two new xDEVS interfaces written in Rust and C, respectively. These new implementations bring xDEVS closer to supporting the execution of DEVS models in embedded systems. Also, they feature remarkably high performance, making them a valuable option for simulating complex systems in traditional platforms. We illustrate how competitive these new implementations are by comparing them with some of the fastest state-of-the-art simulators.

An increasing amount of data is being injected into the network from IoT (Internet of Things) applications. Many of these applications, developed to improve society's quality of life, are latency-critical and inject large amounts of data into the network. These requirements of IoT applications trigger the emergence of Edge computing paradigm. Currently, data centers are responsible for a global energy use between 2% and 3%. However, this trend is difficult to maintain, as bringing computing infrastructures closer to the edge of the network comes with its own set of challenges for energy efficiency. In this paper, we propose our approach for the sustainability of future computing infrastructures to provide (i) an energy-efficient and economically viable deployment, (ii) a fault-tolerant automated operation, and (iii) a collaborative resource management to improve resource efficiency. We identify the main limitations of applying Cloud-based approaches close to the data sources and present the research challenges to Edge sustainability arising from these constraints. We propose two-phase immersion cooling, formal modeling, machine learning, and energy-centric federated management as Edge-enabling technologies. We present our early results towards the sustainability of an Edge infrastructure to demonstrate the benefits of our approach for future computing environments and deployments. © 2023, CC BY.

Nowadays, embedded systems are provided with cache memories that are large enough to influence in both performance and energy consumption as never occurred before in this kind of systems. In addition, the cache memory system has been identified as a component that improves those metrics by adapting its configuration according to the memory access patterns of the applications being run. However, given that cache memories have many parameters which may be set to a high number of different values, designers face to a wide and time-consuming exploration space. In this paper we propose an optimization framework based on Grammatical Evolution (GE) which is able to efficiently find the best cache configurations for a given set of benchmark applications. This metaheuristic allows an important reduction of the optimization runtime obtaining good results in a low number of generations. Besides, this reduction is also increased due to the efficient storage of evaluated caches. Moreover, we selected GE because the plasticity of the grammar eases the creation of phenotypes that form the call to the cache simulator required for the evaluation of the different configurations. Experimental results for the Mediabench suite show that our proposal is able to find cache configurations that obtain an average improvement of 62% versus a real world baseline configuration. © 2023, CC BY-SA.
