In this study we address the complex practical problem of multiple heterogeneous container loading with a simple genetic algorithm. We demonstrate that with a well-chosen representation including a heuristic and a suitable fitness function the other aspects of the genetic algorithm do not need extensive work for good results. Following systematic study of our method on synthetically generated data, we visually showcase the solution for a company-based problem instance. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The natural progression from classic Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodologies to Modeling and Simulation-Based Systems Engineering (M&SBSE) brings the need for more flexible and powerful validation tools. Completing the structure and descriptions of static models with self-diagnosis greatly facilitates the development, implementation, and validation of complex models. However, current simulation development environments and libraries often lack providing complete tools to validate these complex models straightforwardly and with the proper level of detail. In this article, we tackle this issue transferring one of the traditional software testing methods, unit testing, to the modeling and simulation field. To this end, we integrate a unit-testing method to the DEVS methodology, allowing the specification of expected states, outcomes, and behaviors of the simulation modules in an XML-based syntax, in all the levels of the hierarchical design. As a result, this methodology enables the generation of powerful and easy-readable verification files. ©2020 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS)

The development of quantum computers represents a breakthrough in the evolution of computing. Their graceful processing capacity will help to solve some problems impossible until now because the algorithms that calculate their solution require too much amount of memory or processing time. In portfolio theory, the investment portfolio optimization problem is one of those problems whose complexity grows exponentially with the number of assets. In this work we analyze the Variational Quantum Eigensolver algorithm, applied to solve the portfolio optimization problem, running on simulators and real quantum computers from IBM. We compare the results with three other classical algorithms for the same problem, running one equivalent condition. By backtesting classical and quantum computing algorithms, we can get a sense of how these algorithms might perform in the real world. This work explores the backtesting of quantum and classical computing algorithms for portfolio optimization and compares the results. The benefits and drawbacks of backtesting are discussed, as well as some of the challenges involved in using real quantum computers of more than 100 qubits. Results show quantum algorithms can be competitive with classical ones, with the advantage of being able to handle a large number of assets in a reasonable time on a future larger quantum computer. © 2023, CC BY.

The combustion of fossil fuels to generate electricity to meet up with high energy demands of buildings, increases pollution;deteriorating the environment and accelerating climate change. The idea of net zero energy buildings (nZEB) was developed to reduce building energy use and pollution. However, there are still many obstacles to implementing the nZEB idea, notably in sub-Saharan Africa, where energy consumption and pollutant emissions from buildings are particularly high. This article focuses on Cameroon, Senegal, and Côte d'Ivoire and proposes guidelines for making a smooth transition to nZEB in sub-Saharan Africa, as are examples of strategies that might be used to minimize energy consumption in buildings and pollution. The path has been shown to consist of the following steps: conducting a baseline assessment;creating building energy codes and standards;conducting a stakeholder analysis;carrying out capacity building and awareness-raising;setting up financing mechanisms and incentives;creating a strong supply chain;setting up a monitoring and evaluation framework;piloting nZEB projects;disseminating best practices;and scaling up adoption. Activity recognition, as an important component of behavioral monitoring and intervention, has attracted enormous attention, especially in Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) and Remote Health Monitoring (RHM) paradigms. While recently resource constrained wearable devices have been gaining popularity, their battery life is limited and constrained by the frequent wireless transmission of data to more computationally powerful back-ends. This paper proposes an ultra-low power activity recognition system using a novel adaptive compressed sensing technique that aims to minimize transmission costs. Coarse-grained on-body sensor localization and unsupervised clustering modules are devised to autonomously reconfigure the compressed sensing module for further power saving. We perform a thorough heuristic optimization using Grammatical Evolution (GE) to ensure minimal computation overhead of the proposed methodology. Our evaluation on a real-world dataset and a low power wearable sensing node demonstrates that our approach can reduce the energy consumption of the wireless data transmission up to 81.2% and 61.5%, with up to 60.6% and 35.0% overall power savings in comparison with baseline and a naive state-of-the-art approaches, respectively. These solutions lead to an average activity recognition accuracy of 89.0%—only 4.8% less than the baseline accuracy—while having a negligible energy overhead of on-node computation. © 2023, CC BY-SA.

Motion deblurring is a critical ill-posed problem that is important in many vision-based robotics applications. The recently proposed event-based double integral (EDI) provides a theoretical framework for solving the deblurring prob-lem with the event camera and generating clear images at high frame-rate. However, the original EDI is mainly designed for offline computation and does not support real-time requirement in many robotics applications. In this paper, we propose the fast EDI, an efficient implementation of EDI that can achieve real-time online computation on single-core CPU devices, which is common for physical robotic platforms used in practice. In experiments, our method can handle event rates at as high as 13 million event per second in a wide variety of challenging lighting conditions. We demonstrate the benefit on multiple downstream real-time applications, including localization, vi-sual tag detection, and feature matching.

There is no doubt about the urgency of ensuring trust in e-voting systems since elections without trust cannot be acceptable in a democratic society. To solve this problem, it was proposed to use blockchain technology, however, in voting systems this leads to significant delays in the execution of transactions, and the software solution is accessible only to a narrow circle of specialists, which clearly does not help to show confidence on the part of voters. This paper proposes a different approach, which is based on the widely available verification of all means and processes that may cause distrust in the accuracy of the vote count or in ensuring their confidentiality. We offer a solution to the problem of transparency of all hardware and software that cause distrust. Voting systems that use this approach are implemented in three leading Ukrainian universities for student elections to self-government bodies. The conceptual model of the e-voting system for state elections on the example of Ukraine is presented. Links to Internet resources are provided where you can not only get acquainted with the principles of building the system, but also conduct an experimental vote in Ukrainian, English or Russian. Crypto-currency markets are known to exhibit inefficiencies, which presents opportunities for profitable cyclic transactions or arbitrage, where one currency is traded for another in a way that results in a net gain without incurring any risk. Quantum computing has shown promise in financial applications, particularly in resolving optimization problems like arbitrage. In this paper, we introduce a differential evolution (DE) optimization algorithm for Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) using Qiskit framework. We elucidate the application of crypto-currency arbitrage using different VQE optimizers. Our findings indicate that the proposed DE-based method effectively converges to the optimal solution in scenarios where other commonly used optimizers, such as COBYLA, struggle to find the global minimum. We further test this procedure’s feasibility on IBM’s real quantum machines up to 127 qubits. With a three-currency scenario, the algorithm converged in 417 steps over a 12-hour period on the "ibm_geneva" machine. A cluster of FPAAs to recognize images using neural networks

Analog computing has been recovering its relevance in the recent years. FPAAs are the equivalent to FPGAs but in the analog domain. The main drawback of FPAAs is their reduced integration capacity. In order to increase the amount of analog resources, in this paper a cluster of 40 FPAAs is proposed. As a use case, a 19-8-6-4 feedforward Neural Network has been implemented on such cluster. With the help of a DCT-based software framework, this NN is able to classify 28x28 MNIST images. Results show that the analog network is able to obtain almost the same results as the software baseline network. I © 2021, CC BY-NC-SA.
