The disciplines of modeling and simulation are essential to the study of complex systems. The department of Systems Engineering and automation and computer architecture at the University of La Laguna has been developing a Java simulation library for Discrete Event Systems (SIGHOS). SIGHOS is intended to be used as part of tools that analyze the effects of proposed solutions on real problems. Using this library, however, requires programming skills which limit its effectiveness. In this paper we propose the introduction of a logic layer that separates the low-level simulation mechanisms of the modeling system. We achieve this through the creation of a web service that can run the simulation remotely via the Internet using SIGHOS. We then describe a service-oriented web application that encompasses a modeling and simulation environment through which a user can create models, process them (using the aforementioned web service), and observe the results without any knowledge of programming.

Analog computing is a field of study which is recovering relevance. FPAAs are the equivalent to FPGAs but in the analog domain. The FPAAs of Anadigm are well suitable for analog designs prototyping. Anadigm provides a time domain functional simulator to check the analog designs before downloading them into the FPAAs. In this paper, a weighted sum is implemented through 3 FPAAs and simulated to test performance of both the simulator and behavior in real conditions with the results that should theoretically be obtained. Results show that most of the times the difference ranges from 0.01V to 0.02V. ©2020 Society for Modeling and Simulation (SCS) International

This paper proposes a technique based in the graphical cluster analysis to be implemented in Smart Power Quality Analyzers (SPQA), a proposal Instrument Class S, according to the standard UNE-EN 61000-4-30, with the goal of monitoring electrical grids where new events arise as a consequence of the penetration of new energy resources. In the presence of an electrical fault the instrument triggers the measurement procedure, according to a settled threshold of the PQ, and calculates the higher-order statistics (HOS) features in the time domain that enable the classification. Performance results over a battery of 160 signals show two clusters (sags and transients), with an acceptable accuracy of 80%. The work also presents the concept of the uncertainty inter-cluster area. The analysis of the intensity cluster disturbances helps the grid operator characterizing better the database and introducing some qualitative criteria for monitoring the smart grid. © 2017 IEEE.

Discrete Event Simulation (DES) in healthcare modeling has been an active research area for many years. However one of the drawbacks of this method is the need for meaningful data for building valid models. This paper discusses Hospital Activity Data Analysis (HADA) which is software specifically designed to be used with a generic hospital simulation model (DGHPSim). The DGHPSim model is built for UK healthcare system and is presented conceptually in this paper. HADA integrates with raw data from different sources to evaluate a hospital's past performance. Its results can be used by hospital managers for statistical inference and general understanding, and by DGHPSim users for estimating appropriate parameters of the simulation models. As well as its use in DGHPSim HADA is well-suited to be generically used for any patient-flow type hospital simulation models.

Intertidal mudflats are among the most productive coastal ecosystems, largely because of the activity of the photosynthetic microbial community on the sediment surface, known as microphytobenthos (MPB). While the dynamics of MPB have been extensively studied in temperate estuaries, there is limited research in tropical estuaries. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the spatio-temporal dynamics of MPB in the Nicoya Gulf (Costa Rica), one of the world's most productive tropical estuaries, using Sentinel-2 images at 10 m spatial resolution from 2018 to 2022. We used Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values ranging from 0 to 0.4 to monitor MPB cover and growth rates (μNDVI, days−1). Analysis of data using Generalized Additive Models (GAM) showed that up to 62 % of the temporal variability in average MPB NDVI, peaking in late wet and early dry seasons (November–December), can be explained by years and months. The high temperatures and irradiance during the dry season (December to April) in the Nicoya estuary may inhibit MPB growth, contrasting with patterns observed in temperate estuaries. We observed higher MPB NDVI in the upper intertidal zone (mean sea level > 0.5 m) as usually occurs in temperate estuaries. This research highlights the importance of high-resolution satellite imagery for long-term monitoring of MPB dynamics in tropical tidal flats, offering a valuable tool for estimating ecosystem services provided by intertidal MPB, such as primary production, climate regulation, and nutrient cycling on a global scale. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

The reduction of the energy consumption in the domain of the embedded systems is becoming the most important design goal due to the increasing use of battery powered consumer devices. Previous research has pointed out the instruction memory organisation as one of the major sources of energy consumption of the embedded systems. Due to this fact, the introduction of any enhancement in this component of the system becomes crucial in order to decrease this energy bottleneck. The purpose of this paper is to present a highlevel energy analysis of the loop buffer schemes that exist in the embedded systems. The crucial energy analysis that is presented in this paper not only proposes a method to evaluate different loop buffer schemes for a certain application, but also guides embedded systems designers to make the correct decision in the trade-offs that exist between the energy budget, the required performance, and the area cost of the embedded system. Experimental results used in this analysis show that, the search of energy savings (up to 76%) has to take into account the performance penalty, the area cost, and the impact of the implementation technology in order to choose the most suitable enhancement that has to be introduced in the instruction memory organisation from the point of view of the energy consumption. © 2013 IEEE.

New multimedia embedded applications are increasingly dynamic, and rely on Dynamically-allocated Data Types (DDTs) to store their data. The optimization of DDTs for each target embedded system is a time-consuming process due to the large design space of possible DDTs implementations. Thus, suitable exploration methods for embedded design metrics (memory accesses, memory usage and power consumption) need to be developed. In this work we present a detailed analysis of the characteristics of different types of Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) to tackle the optimization of DDTs in multimedia applications and compare them with other state-of-the-art heuristics. Our results with state-of-the-art MOEAs in two object-oriented multi-media embedded applications show that more sophisticated MOEAs (SPEA2 and NSGA-II) offer better solutions than simple schemes (VEGA). Moreover, the suitable sophisticated scheme varies according to the available exploration time, namely, NSGA-II outperforms SPEA2 in the first set of solutions (300-500 generations), while SPEA2 offers better solutions afterwards. Since Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) technologies are being explored extensively nowadays as viable replacements for SRAM based memories in LLCs and even L2 caches, we try to take stock of their potential as level 1 (L1) data caches. These NVMs like Spin Torque Transfer RAM(STT-MRAM), Resistive-RAM(ReRAM) and Phase Change RAM (PRAM) are not subject to leakage problems with technology scaling. They also show significant area gains and lower dynamic power consumption. A direct drop-in replacement of SRAM by NVMs is, however, still not feasible due to a number of shortcomings with latency (write or read) and/or endurance/reliability among them being the major issues. STT-MRAM is increasingly becoming the NVM of choice for high performance and general purpose embedded platforms due to characteristics like low access latency, low power and long lifetime. With advancements in cell technology, and taking into account the stringent reliability and performance requirements for advanced technology nodes, the major bottleneck to the use of STT-MRAM in high level caches has become read latency (instead of write latency as previously believed). The main focus of this paper is the exploration of read penalty issues in a NVM based L1 data cache (D-cache) for an ARM like single core general purpose system. We propose a design method for the STT-MRAM based D-cache in such a platform. This design addresses the adverse effects due to the STT-MRAM read penalty issues by means of micro-architectural modifications along with code transformations. According to our simulations, the appropriate tuning of selective architecture parameters in our proposal and suitable optimizations can reduce the performance penalty introduced by the NVM (initially ∼54%) to extremely tolerable levels (∼8%). © 2015 EDAA.

Harmful Algaeand Cyanobacteria Blooms (HACBs) are dangerous dynamic processes for the users/inhabitants of the hydric resources. Their development and contingency plans can be anticipated by using Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs) equipped with a self-driven system capable of deciding how to displace the ASV and its multi-parametric probe to take measurements in the 3D locations of the water body where the HACB is likely to occur. This paper presents a new self-driven system for that purpose, consistent on 1) an offline trajectory planner for the ASV that exploits the information provided by a commercial HACBs simulator to optimize, in turn, the ASV horizontal and probe vertical displacements;and 2) a guidance and control system specially designed for making the ASV follow the planned trajectories. The paper also presents a comprehensive set of simulations to evaluate our proposal's performance and adjust its parameters. © 2023 IEEE.
