Exploring and understanding the functioning of the human brain is one of the greatest challenges for current research. Neuromorphic engineering tries to address this challenge by abstracting biological mechanisms and translating them into technology. Via the abstraction process and experiments with the resulting technical system, an attempt is made to obtain information about the biological counterpart. One subsection of Neuromorphic Engineering (NE) are Spiking Neural Networks (SNN), which describe the structures of the human brain more and more closely than Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). Together with their dedicated hardware, SNNs provide a good platform for developing new algorithms for information processing. In the context of these neuromorphic hardware platforms, this paper aims to develop an interface for a digital hardware platform (SPINN-3 Development Board) to enable the use of industrial or conventional sensors and thus create new approaches for experimental research. The basis for this endeavor is a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), which is placed as a gateway between the sensors and the neuromorphic hardware. Overall, the developed system provides a robust solution for a wide variety of investigations related to neuromorphic hardware and SNNs. Furthermore, the solution also offers suitable possibilities to monitor all processes within the system in order to obtain suitable measurements, which can be examined in search of meaningful results. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

Simulation of High-Performance Memory Allocators

For the last thirty years, a large variety of memory allocators have been proposed. Since performance, memory usage and energy consumption of each memory allocator differs, software engineers often face difficult choices in selecting the most suitable approach for their applications. To this end, custom allocators are developed from scratch, which is a difficult and error-prone process. This issue has special impact in the field of portable consumer embedded systems, that must execute a limited amount of multimedia applications, demanding high performance and extensive memory usage at a low energy consumption. This paper presents a flexible and efficient simulator to study Dynamic Memory Managers (DMMs), a composition of one or more memory allocators. This novel approach allows programmers to simulate custom and general DMMs, which can be composed without incurring any additional runtime overhead or additional programming cost. We show that this infrastructure simplifies DMM construction, mainly because the target application does not need to be compiled every time a new DMM must be evaluated and because we propose a structured method to search and build DMMs in an object-oriented fashion. Within a search procedure, the system designer can choose the "best" allocator by simulation for a particular target application and embedded system. In our evaluation, we show that our scheme delivers better performance, less memory usage and less energy consumption than single memory allocators. © 2024, CC BY-SA.

This paper describes an academic project building on various state-of-the-art Industry 4.0 technologies. The project considers as the primary scenario the current problem behind the accumulation of biological waste in the vicinity of hospitals due to the COVID-19. To that end, a fully automated personal protective equipment recycling plant is developed using the Factory I/O simulation tool, TIA Portal, and Ignition. The project is considered to serve well as a reference for other Electrical Engineering undergraduates while complementing their training in skills such as design, automation, and supervision of industrial processes.

Current asymmetric cryptography is based on the principle that while classical computers can efficiently multiply large integers, the inverse operation, factorization, is significantly more complex. For sufficiently large integers, this factorization process can take in classical computers hundreds or even thousands of years to complete. However, there exist some quantum algorithms that might be able to factor integers theoretically - the theory works properly, but the hardware requirements are far away from what we can build nowadays - and, for instance, Yan, B. et al. ([14]) claim to have constructed a hybrid algorithm which could be able even to challenge RSA-2048 in the near future. This work analyses this article and replicates the experiments they carried out, but with a different quantum method (VQE), being able to factor the number 1961. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. As quantum computing systems mature and move from laboratories to production computing environments, corresponding software stacks are becoming key for their successful utilization. In particular, the expected use of quantum systems as HPC accelerators requires a deep integration with the existing and widely deployed HPC software stacks. Additionally, new requirements such as dynamic compilation and new challenges for tools and programming models must be considered. We tackle these challenges by developing the Munich Quantum Software Stack—a comprehensive initiative by the Munich Quantum Valley to offer a flexible, efficient, and user-oriented software environment. In this poster, we describe the core components and workflows, and how they will enable this transformation from quantum experiments to quantum accelerators.

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) can be seen as flexible capacitors, where an incompressible elastomer is sandwiched between two compliant electrodes. From the elastomer non-linear and time-dependent phenomena arise during the activation of the actuator. This results in the need for appropriate control methods, especially when they are used in the field of soft robots. Therefore, this paper presents a feedforward controller which is based on Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs). To the best of our knowledge this is the first time DEAs and SNNs are combined to make a step towards true soft robots. It was demonstrated that it is necessary to include feedback into the control scheme. Also, it was found that in the context of a SpiNN-3 development board as a neuromorphic hardware platform, neuron encoding is the most promising encoding method. This also implies that a classification approach is preferable to a regression approach.

Traditional cryptographic frameworks are seriously threatened by the quick development of quantum computing, especially those that depend on public-key cryptosystems like RSA and ECC. Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) seeks to create cryptographic methods that are impervious to quantum computer assaults in order to overcome this difficulty. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which has selected and standardised quantum-resistant techniques like CRYSTALS-Kyber for key encapsulation and CRYSTALS-Dilithium for digital signatures, has sparked recent advancements in PQC. At the same time, the need for reliable PQC solutions has increased due to developments in quantum computing, such as IBM's improvements in qubit stability and Google's “quantum supremacy” assertion. In order to protect data security in the post-quantum age, PQC regulations must be adopted globally, as highlighted by the intersection of these fields. Current developments in PQC standardisation and the changing state of quantum computing technology are highlighted in this paper.

PERCIVAL: Open-Source Posit RISC-V Core with Quire Capability

The posit representation for real numbers is an alternative to the ubiquitous IEEE 754 floating-point standard. In this work, we present PERCIVAL, an application-level posit RISC-V core based on CVA6 that can execute all posit instructions, including the quire fused operations. This solves the obstacle encountered by previous works, which only included partial posit support or which had to emulate posits in software. In addition, Xposit, a RISC-V extension for posit instructions is incorporated into LLVM. Therefore, PERCIVAL is the first work that integrates the complete posit instruction set in hardware. These elements allow for the native execution of posit instructions as well as the standard floating-point ones, further permitting the comparison of these representations. FPGA and ASIC synthesis show the hardware cost of implementing 32-bit posits and highlight the significant overhead of including a quire accumulator. However, results show that the quire enables a more accurate execution of dot products. In general matrix multiplications, the accuracy error is reduced up to 4 orders of magnitude. Furthermore, performance comparisons show that these accuracy improvements do not hinder their execution, as posits run as fast as single-precision floats and exhibit better timing than double-precision floats, thus potentially providing an alternative representation. Silicosis, a debilitating occupational lung disease caused by inhaling crystalline silica, continues to be a significant global health issue, especially with the increasing use of engineered stone (ES) surfaces containing high silica content. Traditional diagnostic methods, dependent on radiological interpretation, have low sensitivity, especially, in the early stages of the disease, and present variability between evaluators. This study explores the efficacy of deep learning techniques in automating the screening and staging of silicosis using chest X-ray images. Utilizing a comprehensive dataset, obtained from the medical records of a cohort of workers exposed to artificial quartz conglomerates, we implemented a preprocessing stage for rib-cage segmentation, followed by classification using state-of-the-art deep learning models. The segmentation model exhibited high precision, ensuring accurate identification of thoracic structures. In the screening phase, our models achieved near-perfect accuracy, with ROC AUC values reaching 1.0, effectively distinguishing between healthy individuals and those with silicosis. The models demonstrated remarkable precision in the staging of the disease. Nevertheless, differentiating between simple silicosis and progressive massive fibrosis, the evolved and complicated form of the disease, presented certain difficulties, especially during the transitional period, when assessment can be significantly subjective. Notwithstanding these difficulties, the models achieved an accuracy of around 81% and ROC AUC scores nearing 0.93. This study highlights the potential of deep learning to generate clinical decision support tools to increase the accuracy and effectiveness in the diagnosis and staging of silicosis, whose early detection would allow the patient to be moved away from all sources of occupational exposure, therefore constituting a substantial advancement in occupational health diagnostics. © 2025 The Authors

The gender gap in STEM is an issue that affects regions and countries worldwide. Furthermore, the percentage of women in these areas depends on a range of different factors. In particular, the gender gap is critical in technology in general and, more specifically, in informatics. This problem affects not only the business sector but also society. Informatics is part of our lives;however, 50% of the world population is not represented in the teams that are developing solutions for solving society's problems. In Spain, the number of women with informatics degrees is around 15%. This work describes a case study developed by the committee of Women in Informatics at the Scientific Society of Spanish Informatics (SCIE) to analyse the perception of informatics scientists on the gender gap in informatics. © 2022 IEEE.
