Motion Computation, also called Optical Flow, consists of measuring the motion of an entity attending to the modulus (how fast) and the phase (direction) of its movement. There are a plethora of different models and algorithms whereas none of them cover all problems associated to the real world. Our contribution presents a novel customizable architecture, including resource usage and performance, of a neuromorphic robust optical flow adjustable platform, although its main drawback is the elevated computational complexity. Bioinspiration and robustness properties of the final system provides an extended set of applications fields.

Smart mobility is an emerging concept characterized by the use of disruptive technologies, such as cloud computing, Big Data and artificial intelligence. In this paper we propose a FIWARE-based component focus on improving the data analysis process, from data generated in services and applications existing in the smart mobility context. Our proposal aims to provide features that allows the development of solutions from the industry 4.0 concept and smart cities. Firstly, we briefly contextualize these terms, then we describe the characteristics and architectural design of our FIWARE component, highlighting how it can improve the support to smart services and applications. We also present real application scenarios where this component can be applied, specially considering the Brazilian cities. © 2017 IEEE.

This paper describes a new approach to develop remote Control laboratories accessible from modern web-browsers and student devices (PCs, laptops, tablets and smart-phones) based on TwinCAT Programmable Controllers (PLCs), Easy JavaScript Simulations (EJsS) webpages, and a *** laboratory web-server. On the one hand, implementing the laboratory back-end application (responsible of closing the feedback loop over the plant under study) using a TwinCAT PLC provides the laboratory controllers with standard/industrial automation methodologies, real-time support and connectivity to a wide range of input/output signals. On the other hand, defining the controller front-end (graphical/interactive interface used by the students to parametrize the PLC behavior and observe the evolution of the plant and PLC signals) with EJsS facilitates the organization of its visual/interactive elements and allows the generation of a JavaScript and HTML5 webpage that is accessible from modern web-browsers and various types of students devices running different operating systems. Last, but not least, developing the laboratory web-server (in charge of managing the student access to the lab and of hosting its different webpages, including the controller front-end) within the JavaScript development and runtime platform *** ensures a lightweight behavior of the remote lab, provides a robust connectivity to the students, and supports efficient (real-time) communication between the controller back & front-ends. This paper also shows how the new strategy is used to update and overcome the current accessibility limitations of some existing (and published) experiences with Proportional/Integral/Differential (PIDs) and Estimator and State Feedback (ESF) Controllers based on TwinCAT PLCs and Easy Java Simulations (EJS) applets front-ends.

The special issue of the International Journal of Numerical Modeling: Electronic Networks, Devices And Fields carried a report on the 9th International Symposium on Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMF 2013). The 9th edition was organized by the department of Electrical Engineering and computer Science of the Faculty of Applied Science of the University of Liège and by the department of Electrical Energy, Systems and automation of the Faculty of Engineering and architecture of Ghent University. EMF 2013 was attended by 108 participants from 19 countries and featured four keynote speakers. Twenty-two of the presented papers were selected for publication in this special issue, while the high scientific and technical quality of the symposium was well reflected in the quality of the manuscripts contained in this issue.

In clinical neuroscience,task-based fMRI (tfMRI) is a popular method to explore the brain network activation difference between healthy controls and brain diseases like Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (PAE). Traditionally,most studies adopt the general linear model (GLM) to detect task-evoked activations. However,GLM has been demonstrated to be limited in reconstructing concurrent heterogeneous networks. In contrast,sparse representation based methods have attracted increasing attention due to the capability of automatically reconstructing concurrent brain activities. However,this data-driven strategy is still challenged in establishing accurate correspondence across individuals and characterizing group-wise consistent activation maps in a principled way. In this paper,we propose a novel multi-stage sparse coding framework to identify group-wise consistent networks in a structured method. By applying this novel framework on two groups of tfMRI data (healthy control and PAE),we can effectively identify group-wise consistent activation maps and characterize brain networks/regions affected by PAE. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.

6TiSCH network architecture has recently been introduced to combine the high reliability and low-power consumption of the TSCH (Time-Slotted Channel Hopping) mode of IEEE 802.15.4e MAC with the ease of integration offered by the IP-enabled upper layer protocols. 6TiSCH network uses RPL (Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks) as its routing protocol to manage the network layer functionalities. RPL however is vulnerable to internal routing attacks such as Rank attack where a malicious node multicasts a fake position (Rank) or a fake path cost toward the sink node to lure nearby nodes to forward their packets through it. In this paper, we propose a hybrid specification-based intrusion detection system (IDS) that consists of centralized and distributed modules installed on the sink and RPL nodes respectively to prevent nodes from selecting an intruder as their successors. The proposed method also eliminates intruders' chances of becoming a time source and disrupt the synchronization of 6TiSCH networks. The results from our extensive simulations show that compared with existing countermeasures, the proposed IDS can effectively protect RPL topologies while only incurring limited network management overhead.

The present work describes a reliable improved gradient optical flow estimation system using FPGAs. This structure is based on space-temporal processing and the use of steerable filters. This model can be enhanced using psychophysical and bioinspired properties according to biological vision in order to mimic the singularity and the performance of mammalians. Experimental results and the resources used to analyze the associate customizability of the system are discussed.

In the last two decades, Interactive White Boards (IWBs) have been widely available as a pedagogic tool. The usability of these boards for teaching disciplines where complex drawings are needed, we consider debatable in multiple regards. In a previous study, we proposed an alternative to the IWBs as a blackboard augmented with a minimum of necessary digital elements. The current study continues our previous research on hybrid design tools, analyzing the limitations of the developed hybrid system regarding the perceived quality of the images being repeatedly captured, annotated, and reprojected onto the board. We validated the hybrid system by evaluating the quality of the projected and reprojected images over a blackboard, using both objective measurements and subjective human perception in extensive and realistic case studies. Based on the results achieved in the current research, we conclude that the proposed hybrid system provides good quality support for teaching disciplines that require complex drawings and board interaction. There is no doubt about the urgency of ensuring trust in e-voting systems since elections without trust cannot be acceptable in a democratic society. To solve this problem, it was proposed to use blockchain technology, however, in voting systems this leads to significant delays in the execution of transactions, and the software solution is accessible only to a narrow circle of specialists, which clearly does not help to show confidence on the part of voters. This paper proposes a different approach, which is based on the widely available verification of all means and processes that may cause distrust in the accuracy of the vote count or in ensuring their confidentiality. We offer a solution to the problem of transparency of all hardware and software that cause distrust. Voting systems that use this approach are implemented in three leading Ukrainian universities for student elections to self-government bodies. The conceptual model of the e-voting system for state elections on the example of Ukraine is presented. Links to Internet resources are provided where you can not only get acquainted with the principles of building the system, but also conduct an experimental vote in Ukrainian, English or Russian. You can also copy and test e-voting server software on your computers. © 2020 IEEE.

Networked telerobots carry sensors that send data, with stochastic transmission times, to a remote human operator, who must execute some real-time control task (e.g., navigation). In this paper we propose to regulate the sensory information being transmitted in order to guarantee soft real-time requirements and also optimize the quality of control, through a novel two-level hierarchical controller that both varies the amount of transmitted sensor data and dynamically reconfigures active sensors. Our controller has been implemented in a web-based teleoperator interface that is highly portable (it runs on desktop PCs, tablets, smartphones, etc.) and non-invasive, i.e., requires minimal modifications in the existing components of the system, thus being suitable for many applications. Here we present our regulation methods and the results of some experiments. They demonstrate the maximization of the transmitted data while guaranteeing the real-time requirements.
