The Morgantina silver Treasure belonging to the collections of the Archaeological Museum of Aidone (Sicily) were involved in a 3D survey and diagnostics campaign for monitoring over time of the finds, in anticipation of their temporary transfer to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, for a period of four years. According to a multidisciplinary approach, it has been developed a scientific and methodological protocol based on non-invasive techniques to achieve a complete and integrated knowledge of the precious items, of their conservation state and increasing their valorisation. All acquired data, i.e. 3D models, UV fluorescence and X-Ray images and chemical information, will be made available, in a integrated way, within a web oriented platform, that will represent a in progress tool to deepen the existing archaeological knowledge and technologies of production and to obtain referenced information of the state of preservation, before and after moving of the finds from their exposure site. © 2015 Metrology for Archaeology, MetroArchaeo

Voltage-frequency island (VFI)-based design has been widely exploited for optimizing system energy of embedded multi-core chip in recent years. The existing work either constructed a single static VFI partition for all kinds of applications or required per core voltage domain configuration. However, the former solution is difficult to find a single optimal VFI partition for diverse applications while the latter one suffers from high hardware cost. In this paper, we propose an energy optimization framework based on dynamically reconfigurable VFI (D-VFI). Our framework treats a small number of cores as dynamic cores (D-cores) and configures each of them with an independent voltage domain. At runtime, the D-cores can be pieced together with neighboring static VFIs. This can dynamically construct the optimal VFI partition for different kinds of applications, achieving more aggressive energy optimization under low cost. To identify the D-cores, we propose a D-VFI aware task scheduling and VFI partitioning algorithm. Moreover, we analyze all the VFI partitions to determine the optimal voltage scaling intervals which can accommodate performance degradation resulted from voltage scaling. Experimental results demonstrates that the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Most small-animal X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanners are based on cone-beam geometry with a flatpanel detector orbiting in a circular trajectory. Image reconstruction in these systems is usually performed by approximate methods based on the algorithm proposed by Feldkamp, Davis and Kress (FDK). Currently there is a strong need to speed-up the reconstruction of CT data in order to extend its clinical applications. The evolution of the semiconductor detector panels has resulted in an increase of detector elements density, which produces a higher amount of data to process. This work focuses on both standard and future high-resolution studies, in which multiple level of parallelism will be needed in the reconstruction process. In addition, this paper addresses the future challenges of processing high-resolution images in many-core and distributed architectures. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Crowdsourced multimedia data poses several challenges when it is collected, stored, indexed, retrieved, and visualized. Examples of crowd source multimedia data are social sensors, vehicle sensors, physical sensors, human sensors, etc. Analyzing such multimodal and diversified crowdsourced data provides very rich understanding about the need of individuals within a crowd. Such understanding makes it possible to tailor services to individuals' needs, also called context-aware services. In this paper, we propose a spatial multimedia big data framework that can collect multimedia data from 1) a very large crowd equipped with multi-sensory smartphones, 2) vehicles, and 3) social networks. A set of multimedia services are offered to users to support their spatio-temporal activities. These include but not limited to 1) simple user interfaces to utilize multimedia services for instant guidance, 2) navigation to points of interests (POI), and 3) efficient and cost effective intra-city rides to users. The big data framework is designed to handle a very large number of multimedia spatio-temporal queries in real-time. The system is a pilot project and will be deployed during the event of Hajj 2015 when over three million pilgrims from all over the world will visit Makkah, Saudi Arabia to perform their Hajj rituals.

Traditional calculations of word similarity are based on a single dictionary, and ignore the coordination between dictionaries. Therefore in order to improve the reliability of similarity calculation methods based on the dictionary, this paper proposes a similarity calculation method based on multi-dictionary, namely through the combination of multiple dictionaries, to improve the reliability of the calculation method of semantic similarity, and meanwhile give the similarity calculation method and steps. © 2014 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Robots operating in household environments need to interact with food containers of different types. Whether a container is filled with milk, juice, yogurt or coffee may affect the way robots grasp and manipulate the container. In this paper, we concentrate on the problem of identifying what kind of content is in a container based on tactile and/or visual feedback in combination with grasping. In particular, we investigate the benefits of using unimodal (visual or tactile) or bimodal (visual-tactile) sensory data for this purpose. We direct our study toward cardboard containers with liquid or solid content or being empty. The motivation for using grasping rather than shaking is that we want to investigate the content prior to applying manipulation actions to a container. Our results show that we achieve comparable classification rates with unimodal data and that the visual and tactile data are complimentary.

This paper presents a synthesis of current-mode PI, PD and PID controllers employing current conveyor transconductance amplifier (CCTA). The features of these controllers are that: the output parameters can be an electronically controlled by adjusting corresponding bias currents, circuit description of the PID controller is simply formulated, it consists of only one CCTA cooperating with 2 grounded resistors and 2 grounded capacitors, PI and PD controllers are composed of single CCTA, 2 grounded resistors, 2 grounded capacitors and 3 grounded resistors, a grounded capacitor, respectively. This proposed circuit is very suitable to develop into an integrated circuit. The given results of the PSpice simulation agree well with the theoretical anticipation. The maximum power consumption in a closed-loop control system obtained from the PID controller and current-mode low-pass filter are approximately 0.393mW and PI and PD controllers are 0.379mW and 0.367mW, respectively at ±1.5V supply voltages.

Chaotic Krill Herd Optimization Algorithm

The Krill Herd (KH) optimization algorithm is one of the most recent heuristic optimization techniques. This algorithm mimics the lifecycle of krill in oceans. Despite high performance of KH, stagnation in local optima and slow convergence speed are two probable problems in solving challenging optimization problems. This work enhances the performance of the KH algorithm by the chaos theory. To be exact, three one-dimensional chaotic maps (Circle, Sine, and Tent) are integrated into KH. The results prove that the proposed chaotic KH algorithms are able to show superior results compared to KH in terms of local optima avoidance and convergence speed.
