We present MagicMap, a cooperative, hybrid positioning system developed at the Humboldt-University in Berlin. While most other positioning systems are limited to specific scenarios and technologies our system provides means to incorporate any available wireless networking technology. Currently, MagicMap supports WLAN, RFID, and ZigBee as wireless technologies for positioning and Linux, Windows, and Windows CE as platforms. Position calculation and exchange is based on a cooperative approach allowing an open internet community to share the required data.

In this paper we present a study on the requirements for the design and implementation of simulation packages for Grid systems. Grids are emerging as new distributed computing systems whose main objective is to manage and allocate geographically distributed computing resources to applications and users in an efficient and transparent manner. Grid systems are at present very difficult and complex to use for experimental studies of large-scale distributed applications. Although the field of simulation of distributed computing systems is mature, recent developments in large-scale distributed systems are raising needs not present in the simulation of the traditional distributed systems. Motivated by this, we present in this work a set of basic requirements that any simulation package for Grid computing should offer. This set of functionalities is obtained after a careful review of most important existing Grid simulation packages and includes new requirements not considered in such simulation packages. Based on the identified set of requirements, a Grid simulator is developed and exemplified for the Grid scheduling problem.

Recently, measurement based studies of software systems proliferated, reflecting an increasingly empirical focus on system availability, reliability, aging and fault tolerance. However, it is a non-trivial, error-prone, arduous, and time-consuming task even for experienced system administrators and statistical analysis to know what a reasonable set of steps should include to model and successfully predict performance variables or system failures of a complex software system. Reported results are fragmented and focus on applying statistical regression techniques to captured numerical system data. In this paper, we propose a best practice guide for building empirical models based on our experience with forecasting Apache Web server performance variables and forecasting call availability of a real world telecommunication system. To substantiate the presented guide and to demonstrate our approach step-by-step we model and predict the response time and the amount of free physical memory of an Apache Web server system. Additionally, we present concrete results for a) variable selection where we cross benchmark three procedures, b) empirical model building where we cross benchmark four techniques and c) sensitivity analysis. This best practice guide intends to assist in configuring modeling approaches systematically for best estimation and prediction results

A new approach to two-dimensional evaluation of the queueing network equilibrium, based on calculations of the steady-state probability vector with use of neural modeling and clustering, is considered in this paper. The equilibrium of queueing networks is a mean for performance evaluation of real communication systems presented as Markov chains. The experimental results were obtained with use of clustering analysis and self-organizing map, and the proposed method was compared with direct techniques on the base of obtained results
