An important research challenge in Human Machine systems (HMS) is to create machines that are able to better understand human behavior so that the overall efficiency of the HMS can be enhanced through increased productivity and reduced safety risk. The research question posed in this paper is the following: Can an understanding of physiological behavior of humans be combined with statistical machine learning theory to develop predictive models that are able to accurately predict the cognitive difficulty experienced by humans? In this paper, we answer this question in the affirmative by demonstrating the use of two physiological measurements, pupil dilation and eye-gaze patterns, as indices of cognitive workload. Specifically, we demonstrate the possibility of cognitive context detection through machine learning and classification using eye-tracking data from NRL's Supervisory Control Operations User Testbed (SCOUT™), a flexible simulation environment that represents the tasks that a future UAS operator would engage in, while controlling multiple UAS. Orthogonal, periodic-sinc-shaped sub-carrier spectra allow multi-carrier bands with the precise, rectangular frequency definition of Nyquist-WDM. Experimental demonstration of these 'folded' OFDM bands shows a 0.5-1.7-dB implementation penalty, allowing 520-Gb/s super-channel transmission over 4160 km.

As a critical technique to support the multimedia services - the major traffic in cooperative cognitive radio networks (CRNs), the statistical quality-of-service (QoS) technique has been proved to be effective in statistically guaranteeing delay-bounded video transmissions over the time-varying wireless channels. On the other hand, in modern cooperative CRNs, the full-duplex spectrum sensing (FD-SS) scheme is designed to be a promising candidate technique for fully utilizing the channel spectrum while significantly enhancing the performance. However, how to efficiently integrate the FD-SS technique in supporting statistical QoS over cooperative CRNs imposes many new challenges not met before. To effectively overcome the above-mentioned difficulties, we propose the QoS-driven resource allocation scheme to implement FD-SS based multimedia services in cooperative CRNs. In particular, under the Nakagami-m channel model, we establish the cooperative spectrum sharing system model. We develop the FD-SS scheme and derive the probabilities of miss detection and false alarm for the proposed FD-SS scheme over cooperative CRNs. Given the statistical QoS constraints, we analyze the effective capacity and our proposed optimal resource allocation policy using the proposed FD-SS architecture over cooperative CRNs. Also conducted is a set of simulations which evaluate the system performance and show that our proposed resource allocation policy can achieve the optimality under the statistical delay-bounded QoS constraints over cooperative CRNs.

This paper presents an analogue feature detector for extraction and sampling of key-points on an arterial blood pressure signal in both humans and small mammals used as human physiological models. A CMOS integrated circuit was implemented in UMC 180nm technology, utilizing the proposed sampling method to greatly reduce the number of samples necessary for meaningful reconstruction of the low bandwidth signal. This circuit was interfaced with an external ADC to fully extract the feature points, and evaluate the system performance. Over the target heart rate range of 1 to 25 Hz, the system outperformed typical home measurement tools for systole and diastole extraction.

A compact reconfigurable band-notched UWB antenna is presented in this paper. The antenna has a partial ground plane with a rectangular slot to achieve the desired bandwidth for UWB from 3.1GHz to 12GHz. The antenna has a single band-notch frequency which is achieved using a switched U-shaped slot, inserted in the radiating patch. This slot is used to decrease interference with WIMAX applications from 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz. The switching reconfiguration of the proposed antenna is achieved through two ideal switches. The antenna inhibits two modes of operation, which result from controlling the switch on/off. The proposed antenna has VSWR © 2016 IEEE.

In this paper we propose a semi-empirical modeling framework for aggregated electrical load and generation using an equivalent circuit formulation. The proposed models are based on complex rectangular voltage and current state variables that provide a generalized form for accurately representing any transmission and distribution components. The model is based on the split equivalent circuit formulation that was previously shown to unify power flow, three phase power flow, harmonic power flow, and transient analyses. Importantly, this formulation establishes variables that are analytical and are compatible with model fitting and machine learning approaches. The parameters for the proposed semi-empirical load and generation models are synthesized from measurement data and can enable real-time simulations for time varying aggregated loads and generation.

This paper proposes a distribution optimal power flow (D-OPF) model for the operation of microgrids. The proposed model minimizes not only the operating cost, including fuel cost, purchasing cost and demand charge, but also several performance indices, including voltage deviation, network power loss and power factor. It co-optimizes the real and reactive power form distributed generators (DGs) and batteries considering their capacity and power factor limits. The D-OPF is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP). Numerical simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed model.

In this paper we introduce a novel algorithm for harmonic steady-state analysis of power systems that is based on the equivalent split-circuit models recently introduced for power flow analysis. By using an equivalent circuit with current and voltage as the state variables, we extend the harmonic balance method that is used for nonlinear circuit simulation in the frequency domain to capture the frequency harmonics and inter-harmonics induced into a power grid due to nonlinear components. This enables the direct incorporation of physics-based steady-state models of power electronics and smart grid devices directly within the power-system simulation framework. For demonstration, steady-state models of a diode and a nonlinear core saturation inductor are derived and incorporated into the steady-state models of a three-phase full bridge rectifier and a magnetic core saturation transformer. These components are simulated within the proposed power flow analysis framework for a multi-bus power system.

We address the resource allocation problem for energy-harvesting (EH) based OFDMA cooperative overlay cognitive radio networks with multiple primary users (PUs) and multiple secondary users (SUs), where PUs and SUs cooperate in terms of both information transmission and energy harvesting. Specifically, SU transmitters first apply the power splitting technique to harvest energy from signals radiated by PU transmitters, and then use the harvested energy to transmit their own and PUs' information. We discuss the joint optimization over relay assignment, subcarrier allocation, power splitting ratio selection, and power control under imperfect channel state information (CSI) conditions, with the objective to maximize SUs' total throughput while guaranteeing PUs' quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. In particular, the direct transmission between each PU transmitter and its corresponding primary receiver is taken into account, and then cooperative transmission with SUs is selected dynamically according to network channel conditions. Although the formulated problem is a non-convex problem with integer variables (e.g., relay assignment variables), we still propose a suboptimal distributed algorithm. Finally, we evaluate and verify the performance of our proposed algorithm through numerical analyses.
