State-of-art graphics processing units (GPUs) employ the single-instruction multiple-data (SIMD) style execution to achieve both high computational throughput and energy efficiency. As previous works have shown, there exists significant computational redundancy in SIMD execution, where different execution lanes operate on the same operand values. Such value locality is referred to as uniform vectors. In this paper, we first show that besides redundancy within a uniform vector, different vectors can also have the identical values. Then, we propose detailed architecture designs to exploit both types of redundancy. For redundancy within a uniform vector, we propose to either extend the vector register file with token bits or add a separate small scalar register file to eliminate redundant computations as well as redundant data storage. For redundancy across different uniform vectors, we adopt instruction reuse, proposed originally for CPU architectures, to detect and eliminate redundancy. The elimination of redundant computations and data storage leads to both significant energy savings and performance improvement. Furthermore, we propose to leverage such redundancy to protect arithmetic-logic units (ALUs) and register files against hardware errors. Our detailed evaluation shows that our proposed design has low hardware overhead and achieves performance gains, up to 23.9% and 12.0% on average, along with energy savings, up to 24.8% and 12.6% on average, as well as a 21.1% and 14.1% protection coverage for ALUs and register files, respectively. © 2013 ACM.

In recent years, the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO), the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), and the relay communication techniques have significantly improved the important performance of radio wireless communication networks. Due to its wide and critical applications, we can also apply these techniques into the underwater acoustic (UWA) wireless networks. In this paper, we propose the power-efficiency resource allocation scheme for tradeoff between the power consumption and quality of service (QoS) of multimedia applications in a relay-based underwater MIMO-OFDM acoustic cooperative wireless networks. Our objective is to efficiently minimize the total power/energy consumption while supporting the QoS-guaranteed services for multimedia applications over underwater MIMO-OFDM acoustic cooperative wireless networks. To achieve these goals, we propose a joint optimization of source and relay network transmit power with the QoS-constraint for the relay-based MIMO-OFDM underwater acoustic cooperative wireless networks. We conduct the extensive simulations to validate and evaluate our proposed scheme, showing its superiority over the other existing schemes.

As an attractive and challenging transmission mode, the wireless full-duplex transmission can potentially double the system throughput if the self-interference can be efficiently cancelled or suppressed as compared with that of the wireless half-duplex transmission. Recently emerged advanced self-interference cancellation and suppression techniques have shown the possibility of avoiding the overwhelmed self-interference of the wireless full-duplex transmission. However, to achieve the double system throughput in wireless full-duplex networks, not only the efficient self-interference cancellation and suppression techniques in the physical-layer is necessary, but also the practical full-duplex medium access control (MAC) protocol is highly demanded in the datalink layer. In this paper, we propose a novel request to send (RTS)/full-duplex clear to send (FCTS) based MAC protocol which can support both bidirectional and unidirectional links in wireless full-duplex networks. Then, we develop the analytical model to characterize the performance of our proposed full-duplex MAC protocol in wireless full-duplex networks. Also conducted is a set of numerical evaluations showing that our proposed full-duplex MAC protocol can achieve superior system throughput as compared with that of the conventional half-duplex MAC protocol for wireless networks.

Microgrids are small-scale highly controlled networks designed to supply electrical energy. From the operational point of view, microgrids are active distribution networks, facilitating the integration of distributed generation units. Major technical issues in this concept include system stability and protection coordination which are significantly influenced by the high penetration of inverter-interfaced distributed energy sources. These units often adopt the frequency-active power and voltagereactive power droop control strategy to participate in the load sharing of an islanded microgrid. The scope of the paper is to investigate the dynamic performance of a low voltage laboratory-scale microgrid system, using experimental results and introduce the concept of Prony analysis for understanding the connected components. Several small disturbance test cases are conducted and the investigations focus on the influence of the droop controlled distributed generation sources.

In a recent article, published in , a valuable consensus view regarding the nomenclature for disordered proteins was presented. In this work the authors present a thoughtful and systemic review of terms that have been used in the literature to describe proteins that sample a heterogeneous set of structures during their biological lifetime. We agree that the term "intrinsically disordered proteins" (IDPs) is an appropriate single descriptor to refer to this particular class of proteins, although it does not fully capture much of the nuanced complexities that are inherent to this class. In what follows we suggest a refinement to this nomenclature based on an analysis of the underlying ensemble that describes the thermally accessible states of a given IDP.

The Software Assurance Metrics and Tool Evaluation (SAMATE) project at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has organized four Static Analysis Tool Expositions (SATE). SATE is designed to advance research in static analysis tools that find security-relevant defects in source code. Briefly, participating tool makers run their tools on a set of programs. Researchers led by NIST analyze the tool outputs. The results and experiences are reported at a workshop. These expositions have accumulated large amounts of data. This collection allowed for the development and validation of practical metrics in regard to static analysis tool effectiveness and independence. In this paper, we discuss the role of the data in determining which metrics can be derived. Specifically, we detail the three characteristics test data should exhibit and explain why the data we use express each combination of two out of these three properties.

Situational awareness (SA) in simple terms is to understand the current state of the system and based on that understanding predict how system states are to evolve over time. Predictive modeling of power systems using conventional methods is time consuming and hence not well suited for real-time operation. In this study, neural network (NN) based non-linear predictor is used to predict states of power system for future time instance. Required control signals are computed based on predicted state variables and control set points. In order to reduce computation the problem is decoupled and solved in a cellular array of NNs. The cellular neural network (CNN) framework allows for accurate prediction with only minimal information exchange between neighboring predictors. The predicted states are then used in computing stability metrics that give proximity to point of instability. The situational awareness platform developed using CNN framework extracts information from data for the next time instance i.e. a step ahead of time and maps this data with geographical coordinates of power system components. The geographic information system (GIS) provides a visual indication of operating status of individual components as well as that of the entire system.

Integrating large photovoltaic (PV) plants into the grid poses challenges to maintaining the system's stability during small and large disturbances. A PV system's output power fluctuates according to the weather conditions (irradiance and temperature), season, and geographic location. The power fluctuations of the PV plants raise frequency and voltage stability issues. This paper presents the impact of a large PV plant on the frequency stability of a power system under small and large disturbances. With automatic generation control and phasor measurement unit information, the power generations of conventional generators are adjusted to mitigate the frequency deviation. Furthermore, the effects of increased PV penetration in a given power system area are examined.

This paper addresses the problem of adaptive state and parameter estimation of open loop unstable plants using a multiple model structure. A state estimate is obtained as a probabilistically weighted sum of the estimates produced by a bank of individual observers. Model identification and convergence of the dynamic weights in the Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation (MMAE) for open-loop unstable plants are analyzed and the effect of the control action (by a controller in the loop) is studied. In the present paper we show that the techniques introduced in MMAE for open-loop stable plants and in the absence of control action are applicable to open-loop unstable plants with a stabilizing controller in the loop. A distance-like pseudo norm between the true plant and the identified model is developed and furthermore we show that the model identified is the one that is the closest to the true plant model in the defined norm among all models in the bank. The performance and convergence of the MMAE procedure are illustrated with Monte-Carlo simulation runs using the model of an inverted pendulum installed on a system of masses, springs, and dampers.
