The exponential data growth is presenting challenges to traditional storage systems. Component-based cluster storage systems, due to their high scalability, are becoming the architecture of next generation storage systems. Cluster storage systems often use data replication to ensure high availability, fault tolerance, and load balance. However, this kind of data replication not only consumes a large amount of storage resources, but also generates more energy consumption. This paper presents a power-aware data replication strategy by leveraging data access behavior. This strategy uses 80/20 rule (80% of the data accesses often go to 20% of the storage space) to replicate only a small amount of frequently accessed data. Furthermore, the storage nodes are divided into a hot node set and a cold node set. Hot nodes, which store a small amount of hot data copies, are always in an active state to guarantee the QoS of the system. The cold nodes which store a large number of infrequently accessed cold data, are placed in a low power state, thus reducing the energy consumption of the cluster storage system. The experimental results show that the proposed strategy can effectively reduce the resource and energy consumption of the system, while ensuring the system performance. © 2013 IEEE.

In Community question answering (QA) sites, malicious users may provide deceptive answers to promote their products or services. It is important to identify and filter out these deceptive answers. In this paper, we first solve this problem with the traditional supervised learning methods. Two kinds of features, including textual and contextual features, are investigated for this task. We further propose to exploit the user relationships to identify the deceptive answers, based on the hypothesis that similar users will have similar behaviors to post deceptive or authentic answers. To measure the user similarity, we propose a new user preference graph based on the answer preference expressed by users, such as "helpful" voting and "best answer" selection. The user preference graph is incorporated into traditional supervised learning framework with the graph regularization technique. The experiment results demonstrate that the user preference graph can indeed help improve the performance of deceptive answer prediction. © 2013 Association for Computational Linguistics.

This paper addresses the problem of keeping an autonomous marine vehicle in a moving triangular formation by regulating its position with respect to two leader vehicles. The follower vehicle has no prior knowledge of the path described by the leaders but has access to their heading angle and is able to measure inter-vehicle ranges. It is assumed that the distance between the leaders is constant and known. A control strategy is adopted that generates speed and heading commands so as to drive suitably defined along track and cross track errors to zero. The commands are used as input to local inner loops for yaw and speed control. The paper describes the algorithms derived for range-based control and assesses their performance in simulations using realistic models of the vehicles involved. Tests with three autonomous marine vehicles equipped with acoustic modems and ranging devices allow for the evaluation of the performance of the algorithms in a real-world situation.

Email spam is a critical problem to the Internet for a long time. The average amount of spam mail reached 72.1% of all email traffic in the world in 2012. The greatest threat to the email service providers was the spam mail sent from botnet, because the spam mail sent from botnet was accounting for more than 78% in 2011; therefore appeared many anti-spam solutions and techniques that were focus on the botnet. Owing to these anti-spam techniques, botnet spam is not effective as before. Spammers are finding new way to send the spam mail. One of the effective methods is using compromised accounts (or bot accounts) to send the spam mail because compromised accounts have good reputation IP addresses and compromised accounts send the spam mail with complete SMTP implemented server, such as Gmail, Yahoo!Mail, and Microsoft Live Mail. The spam mail send form compromised accounts are very difficult to be detected by any anti-spam techniques. Hence, we focus on the features spammers cannot easily hide. According to our research we find that normal users usually do not reply to the spam mail. Moreover, our empirical analysis reveals that the compromised account actually have low reply rate. We develop a system called “Hawkeye” that can find the compromised accounts effectively by checking the account's reply rate.

In this paper, we address the column-based low-rank matrix approximation problem using a novel parallel approach. Our approach is based on the divide-and-combine idea. We first perform column selection on submatrices of an original data matrix in parallel, and then combine the selected columns into the final output. Our approach enjoys a theoretical relative-error upper bound. In addition, our column-based low-rank approximation partitions data in a deterministic way and makes no assumptions about matrix coherence. Compared with other traditional methods, our approach is scalable on largescale matrices. Finally, experiments on both simulated and real world data show that our approach is both efficient and effective.

In modern processor systems, on-chip Last Level Caches (LLCs) are used to bridge the speed gap between CPUs and off-chip memory. In recent years, the LRU policy effectiveness in low level caches has been questioned. A significant amount of recent work has explored the design space of replacement policies for CPUs' low level cache systems, and proposed a variety of replacement policies. All these pieces of work are based on the traditional idea of a conventional passive cache, which triggers memory accesses exclusively when there is a cache miss. Such passive cache systems have a theoretical performance upper bound, which is represented by Optimal Algorithm. In this work, we introduce a novel cache system called Spontaneous Reload Cache (SR-Cache). Contrary to passive caches, no matter whether a cache access is a hit or miss, an SR-Cache can actively load or reload an off-chip data block which is predicted to be used in the near future and evict the data block which has the lowest probability to be reused soon. We show that, with minimal hardware overhead, SR-Cache can achieve much better performance than conventional passive caches. © 2013 IEEE.

Recently, many software runtime systems have been proposed that allow developers to efficiently map applications to contemporary consumer electronic devices and high-performance academic processing platforms. Most of these runtime systems employ advanced scheduling techniques for automatic task assignment to all available processing elements. However, they focus on a particular environment and architecture, and it is not easy to port them to reconfigurable embedded MPSoCs. As a consequence, in the embedded community, researchers implement hardwired application-specific task schedulers, which can not be used by other embedded MPSoCs. To address this problem, in this paper we propose a lightweight runtime software framework for reconfigurable shared-memory MPSoCs, that integrate a master embedded processor connected to slave cores. Similarly to many of the aforementioned advanced runtime systems, we adopt a task-based programming model that uses simple, pragma-based annotations of the application software, in order to dynamically resolve task dependencies. Our runtime system supports heterogeneity in the hardware resources, and is also low-overhead to account for possible limitations in their processing capabilities and available on-chip memory. To evaluate our proposal, we have prototyped an MPSoC with seven slaves to a Xilinx ML605 FPGA board. We run three micro-benchmarks that achieve a performance speedup of 3.8x, 7x and 5.8x, and energy consumption of 27%, 14% and 18% respectively, compared to a single-core baseline system with no runtime support.

This paper describes the use of ant colony models for photographic rendering, that is, for the depiction or interpretation of photographic images. A description of a previously proposed ant-based edge detection method called pherographia is given in order to contextualize this paper's proposal. Then, the application of the KANTS algorithm to photo-rendering is introduced. KANTS is ant-based clustering algorithm described by a set of equations that model the local behavior of simple units (ants). These units represent data samples. When moving on a heterogeneous 2-dimensional lattice of vectors, global behavior emerges from the local interaction between the ants, which self-organize into clusters. In this paper, a data set consists of the RGB values of a digital (or digitalized) photograph. Two different approaches for the initialization of the environment are tested, each one resulting in radically different output images: when the environment is initialized with the RGB values of the same image that is used to generate the data set, the final result is very similar to the original photo; a random initialization of the environment leads to an abstract interpretation of the photo. The results are contextualized within previous swarm artworks by the authors.
