Joint Optimization of Latency and Energy Consumption for Mobile Edge Computing Based Proximity Detection in Road networks

In recent years, artificial intelligence and automotive industry have developed rapidly, and autonomous driving has gradually become the focus of the industry. In road networks, the problem of proximity detection refers to detecting whether two moving objects are close to each other or not in real time. However, the battery life and computing capability of mobile devices are limited in the actual scene,which results in high latency and energy consumption. Therefore, it is a tough problem to determine the proximity relationship between mobile users with low latency and energy consumption. In this article, we aim at finding a tradeoff between latency and energy consumption. We formalize the computation offloading problem base on mobile edge computing(MEC)into a constrained multiobjective optimization problem(CMOP) and utilize NSGA-II to solve it. The simulation results demonstrate that NSGA-II can find the Pareto set, which reduces the latency and energy consumption effectively. In addition, a large number of solutions provided by the Pareto set give us more choices of the offloading decision according to the actual situation.

Euphemism, which is often used to disguise true intentions or soften the tone of speech, has garnered significant attention for its detection in recent years. Current approaches to euphemism detection struggle with uncommon data, where new and rare vocabularies frequently emerge in the test set, leading to decreased model performance. To address these challenges, we propose a novel framework that combines data augmentation, self-training, and a special sample selection method. We expand the original dataset using lexical and sentence-level data augmentation techniques, enhancing the representation of rare vocabulary and allowing the model to familiarize itself with their contexts and usage characteristics. Next, we employ self-training as a semi-supervised learning approach, utilizing the augmented datasets to iteratively generate and refine pseudo-labels. During each iteration, a KNN framework is used to generate pseudo-labels by searching for the nearest neighbor texts, thus enhancing the quality of these labels. Finally, to further increase the presence of rare vocabulary in the training data, we implement a sample selection strategy based on euphemism frequency and predictive uncertainty, integrating it with the earlier steps. Experimental results demonstrate that our framework outperforms previous research on most metrics and achieves a 10% increase over the baseline model. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are continuously being evaluated in more diverse contexts. However, they still have challenges when extracting information from highly specific internal technical documentation. One specific area of real-world technical documentation is telecommunications engineering, which could benefit from domain-specific LLMs. In this article, we expand the notion of Technical Language Processing (TLP) to the telecommunications domain by introducing and analyzing the format of technical specifications from a leading telecommunications equipment vendor. Additionally, we highlight the importance of use case definitions by introducing requirement property mapping for maximizing information extraction. Also, we recommend actions to mitigate the effect of the internal specifications format on information extraction, which can lead to LLM-friendly internal specifications. Finally, a PoC is built to showcase the improvements of our proposed framework. © 2025 The Author(s). Applied AI Letters published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

The resource-constrained task scheduling problem has been one of the popular research topics in cloud computing systems. By employing the dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) techniques, the task scheduling can be further constrained by energy consumption. The paper investigates the DAG task scheduling considering both the resource and energy constraints in heterogeneous distributed systems. The objective is to minimize the scheduling length. An energy-constrained task scheduling framework is employed, where tasks are initially scheduled according to their upward rank values. Then two heuristics are proposed to improve the initial solution, namely, the simulated annealing local search method and the frequency adjustment method. Experiments are conducted by testing a large number of instances with multiple parameter settings, and the results show that the proposed algorithms are effective and efficient. © 2023 IEEE.

Benefiting from high flexibility and probability of line-of-sight, deploying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV s) as aerial access points has emerged as a promising solution for ensuring reliable wireless connectivity in crowded events. This paper introduces a UAV scheduling process adaptive to dynamic mobile network demand, including three phases. In the sensing phase, the user distribution is sensed, and user number thresholds are set to determine whether UAV assistance is needed. The planning phase presents an enhanced mean shift algorithm to find suitable locations to deploy UAVs with a dynamic bandwidth derived from the user distribution, the UAV's maximum capacity, and the UAV's maximum throughput. The deploying phase dispatches and recalls UAV s based on planning results. Comprehensive simulation experiments are conducted on OMNeT ++ using real-world data. Results show that the proposed process shows great adaptivity, with an efficiency increase of 18.7% and a fairness increase of 28.9 % compared to the existing related works on average.

Service identities are crucial for authentication and access control, ensuring that only authorized services access specific resources. The SPIFFE framework addresses workload identity management and authentication effectively but needs support for solutions (e.g., extensible tokens) that fine-granular authorization mechanisms in distributed scenarios can use. In this context, we present the Lightweight SVID (LSVID), an identity document in JSON format that can be extended and used as a token. As an extensible token, Lightweight SVID (LSVID) enables features such as delegation, attenuation, and traceability, enhancing its flexibility and applicability. Our approach provides efficient handling of token extensions and validations, demonstrated through a proof-of-concept implemented in Go. Baseline results indicate that LSVID critical operations are efficient, with processing times in the microsecond range, offering significant functional advantages over the traditional JWT-SVIDs, one of two key security documents from SPIFFE.

Sleep is one of the fundamental human needs alongside food, water, and shelter, which is why having an adequate sleep environment is so important, given that quality of sleep is associated with several health conditions. One of the main factors that affects a person's sleep is the amount or level of light in a room. For this reason, we propose an intelligent lighting system, which continuously monitors the state of the user and communicates through the home network to control the lights and turns them off automatically in case it detects that the user is asleep. In order to achieve this, existing libraries for sleep detection were used and a K-means clustering based algorithm that uses heart rate data was developed. This system uses a smartwatch for data collection, a Raspberry Pi Zero W for controlling the lights and the mDNS protocol for service discovery.

Modelling and simulation of a commercially available dielectric elastomer actuator

In order to fully harness the potential of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) in soft robots, advanced control methods are needed. An important groundwork for this is the development of a control-oriented model that can adequately describe the underlying dynamics of a DEA. A common feature of existing models is that always custom-made DEAs were investigated. This makes the modelling process easier, as all specifications and the structure of the actuator are well known. In the case of a commercial actuator, however, only the information from the manufacturer is available and must be checked or completed during the modelling process. The aim of this paper is to explore how a commercial stacked silicone-based DEA can be modelled and how complex the model should be to properly replicate the features of the actuator. The static description has demonstrated the suitability of Hooke's law. In the case of dynamic description, it is shown that no viscoelastic model is needed for control-oriented modelling. However, if all features of the DEA are considered, the generalized Kelvin-Maxwell model with three Maxwell elements shows good results, stability and computational efficiency. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

The increasing trend in the percentage of older people among the European population, and in the number of older people living alone, poses a number of challenges, some of which can be addressed from digital solutions monitoring and supporting comfort, physical activity and health. Nowadays, research efforts seek to ensure, through technology-based solutions, the quality of life as people age and the needs that arise during the process. The home environment can host modern home-automation solutions supporting information gathering, monitoring and early intervention to prevent risks to lead to major consequences. Smart homes can thus make a positive contribution to the Active and Healthy Ageing paradigm. However, one of the biggest limitations preventing smart homes from being a reality is the lack of interoperability among different-vendor devices or the fact that most of the commer-tial solutions rely on cloud-based solutions. This work faces these limitations and proposes an architecture that, based on the use of commercial sensors, ensures that information is gathered and processed locally, independently of the commercial solution provided by the manufacturer of the device. The architecture has been experimentally validated by implementing a monitoring system based on environmental and security sensors interconnected by means of the ZigBee wireless communication protocol. The proposed system also supports caregivers caring for their older people who will be granted access to collected data. Thus, the system offers a remote monitoring system based on an information storage and visualisation solution. This system is intended to provide a solution that improves the quality of life and extends the time of independent living at home for older people.

A Low-Cost Real-Time Spiking System for Obstacle Detection based on Ultrasonic Sensors and Rate Coding

Since the advent of mobile robots, obstacle detection has been a topic of great interest. It has also been a subject of study in neuroscience, where flying insects and bats could be considered two of the most interesting cases in terms of vision-based and sound-based mechanisms for obstacle detection, respectively. Currently, many studies focus on vision-based obstacle detection, but not many can be found regarding sound-based obstacle detection. This work focuses on the latter approach, which also makes use of a Spiking Neural Network to exploit the advantages of these architectures and achieve an approach closer to biology. The complete system was tested through a series of experiments that confirm the validity of the spiking architecture for obstacle detection. It is empirically demonstrated that, when the distance between the robot and the obstacle decreases, the output firing rate of the system increases in response as expected, and vice versa. Therefore, there is a direct relation between the two. Furthermore, there is a distance threshold between detectable and undetectable objects which is also empirically measured in this work. An in-depth study on how this system works at low level based on the Inter-Spike Interval concept was performed, which may be useful in the future development of applications based on spiking filters. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.
