The growing demand for location-based services in areas like virtual reality, robot control, and navigation has intensified the focus on indoor localization. Visible light positioning (VLP), leveraging visible light communications (VLC), becomes a promising indoor positioning technology due to its high accuracy and low cost. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of VLP systems. In particular, since VLC lays the foundation for VLP, we first present a detailed overview of the principles of VLC. Then, we provide an in-depth overview of VLP algorithms. The performance of each positioning algorithm is also compared in terms of various metrics such as accuracy, coverage, and orientation limitation. Beyond the physical layer studies, the network design for a VLP system is also investigated, including multi-access technologies, resource allocation, and light-emitting diode (LED) placements. Next, the applications of the VLP systems are overviewed. Finally, this paper outlines open issues, challenges, and opportunities for the research field. In a nutshell, this paper constitutes the first holistic survey on VLP from state-of-the-art studies to practical uses. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we propose a fuzzy approach for texture-based segmentation, where both the obtained regions and the texture features are fuzzy. This way, we have considered the imprecision related to the texture concept, as well as the imprecision associated with the boundaries between regions in the images. With regard to the texture descriptors, we propose to define them on the basis of the perceptual properties of texture. Since these properties are imprecise by nature, they are modelled by means of fuzzy sets defined on the domain of some of the most representative measures of each property. With regard to the segmentation technique, a fuzzy path-based segmentation is proposed. In this approach, fuzzy connectivity is used to measure the relationship between any pair of pixels. Thus, given a set of seed points, fuzzy regions are obtained on the basis of the connectivity between each seed point and the rest of pixels in the image. Finally, this proposal is applied to obtain fuzzy segmentations from real images.

Physico-mechanical properties of rocks have a direct correlation with the drilling rate of percussive drill. The prediction of drilling rate is important for the deployment of drills during the planning stage. In tropical climatic regions, limestone is classified as blocky, very blocky, blocky/ seamy and disintegrated based on the degree of weathering. Weathering of limestone takes place very rapidly in tropical (wet) climatic regions. Previous researchers have correlated different individual rock mass properties with rate of drilling. However, single property of limestone is not adequate to correlate with the drilling rate. In this study, sensitivity analysis of different properties of weathered limestone was carried out with respect to drilling rate. Rock density, rock quality designation (RQD), geological strength index (GSI), point load index (PLI) and Schmidt hammer rebound number (SHRN) were identified as crucial input parameters. 113 data sets were collected with the foregoing five input parameters and the output parameter as drilling rate of percussive drills. Data was analysed with multi variable regression analysis (MVRA) which showed R2 value as 0.54. Artificial neural network (ANN) has been widely used for solving various engineering problems. On the other hand, optimization problems are solved by the Biogeography Based Optimization (BBO) model. Further this data was analysed with a hybrid intelligent model namely BBO- ANN. The increasing prevalence of botnet attacks in IoT networks has led to the development of deep learning techniques for their detection. However, conventional centralized deep learning models pose challenges in simultaneously ensuring user data privacy and detecting botnet attacks. To address this issue, this study evaluates the efficacy of Federated Learning (FL) in detecting IoT malware traffic while preserving user privacy. The study employs N-BaIoT, a dataset of real-world IoT network traffic infected by malware, and compares the effectiveness of FL models using Convolutional Neural Network, Long Short-Term Memory, and Gated Recurrent Unit models with a centralized approach. The results indicate that FL can achieve high performance in detecting abnormal traffic in IoT networks, with the CNN model yielding the best results among the three models evaluated. The study recommends the use of FL for IoT malware traffic detection due to its ability to preserve data privacy.

The technological improvements of recent years made possible to give a boost to immersive technologies such as virtual or augmented reality. This impulse has lowered costs, making it possible for anyone to create content in 360 degrees. In education, this allows the student to be easily placed in contexts where otherwise a large number of resources would be needed. There are currently many applications for the creation of interactive activities, but few totally free and even less with the ability to integrate into different Learning Management Systems. It is difficult for teachers to implement interactive learning experiences and even more so to obtain detailed feedback from students. This article details the creation of an interactive learning and assessment activity, combining text, interactive videos and 360-degree scenes, capable of providing information on student interaction through an xAPI. This information will be collected in a Learning Record Store that can be taken as a data source by Learning and Content Management Systems, opening the opportunity to apply learning analytics techniques. As an example, we used a tool for creating a serious game that serves to prepare a laboratory practice of the subject Local networks, providing a fast, intuitive and useful way to apply the methodology Flip-Game Engineering and Technology (Flip-GET) developed by researchers of the University of Cadiz. © 2019 IEEE.

Visible light positioning (VLP) is an accurate indoor positioning technology that uses luminaires as transmitters. In particular, circular luminaires are a common source type for VLP, that are typically treated only as point sources for positioning, while ignoring their geometry characteristics. In this paper, the arc feature of the circular luminaire and the coordinate information obtained via visible light communication (VLC) are jointly used for positioning, and a novel perspective arcs approach is proposed for VLC-enabled indoor positioning. The proposed approach does not rely on any inertial measurement unit and has no tilted angle limitaion at the user. First, a VLC assisted perspective circle and arc algorithm (V-PCA) is proposed for a scenario in which a complete luminaire and an incomplete one can be captured by the user. Based on plane and solid geometry theory, the relationship between the luminaire and the user is exploited to estimate the orientation and the coordinate of the luminaire in the camera coordinate system. Then, the pose and location of the user in the world coordinate system are obtained by single-view geometry theory. Considering the cases in which parts of VLC links are blocked, an anti-occlusion VLC assisted perspective arcs algorithm (OA-V-PA) is proposed. In OA-V-PA, an approximation method is developed to estimate the projection of the luminaire's center on the image and, then, to calculate the pose and location of the user. Simulation results show that the proposed indoor positioning algorithm can achieve a 90th percentile positioning accuracy of around 10 cm. Moreover, an experimental prototype is implemented to verify the feasibility. In the established prototype, a fused image processing method is proposed to simultaneously obtain the VLC information and the geometric information. Experimental results in the established prototype show that the average positioning accuracy is less than 5 cm for different tilted angles of the user.

Intertidal mudflats are among the most productive coastal ecosystems, largely because of the activity of the photosynthetic microbial community on the sediment surface, known as microphytobenthos (MPB). While the dynamics of MPB have been extensively studied in temperate estuaries, there is limited research in tropical estuaries. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the spatio-temporal dynamics of MPB in the Nicoya Gulf (Costa Rica), one of the world's most productive tropical estuaries, using Sentinel-2 images at 10 m spatial resolution from 2018 to 2022. We used Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values ranging from 0 to 0.4 to monitor MPB cover and growth rates (µNDVI, days-1). Analysis of data using Generalized Additive Models (GAM) showed that up to 62% of the temporal variability in average MPB NDVI, peaking in late wet and early dry seasons (November-December), can be explained by years and months. The high temperatures and irradiance during the dry season (December to April) in the Nicoya estuary may inhibit MPB growth, contrasting with patterns observed in temperate estuaries. We observed higher MPB NDVI in the upper intertidal zone (mean sea level > 0.5 m) as usually occurs in temperate estuaries. This research highlights the importance of high-resolution satellite imagery for long-term monitoring of MPB dynamics in tropical tidal flats, crucial for accurate evaluation of global carbon cycling and ecosystem services. © 2024, The Authors. As a NP-hard problem, it is always baffling to figure out a scheduling strategy to arrange the interconnected tasks of a workflow on the infinite number of resources in the cloud environment so that the workflow can be addressed efficiently and robustly. This paper focuses on scheduling the workflow’s tasks on the cloud resources with less rental cost of resources while the whole schedule length (makespan) will not exceed the given deadline. As one of the most popular evolutionary algorithms, particle swarm optimization (PSO) has been successfully applied for the workflow scheduling problem. Inspired by the idea of multiple groups and the distributed parallel computing, we develop an enhanced PSO algorithm for the workflow scheduling problem in clouds. Besides, a pretreatment strategy is adopted to simplify the workflow’s structure. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposal has good performance on improving the algorithm’s searching ability and finding better solutions.
