The continuous growth of data created by Internet-connected devices has been posing a challenge for mobile operators. The increase in the network traffic has exceeded the network capacity to efficiently provide services, specially for applications that require low latency. Edge computing is a concept that allows lowering the network traffic by using cloud-computing resources closer to the devices that either consume or generate data. Based on this concept, we designed an architecture that offers a mechanism to reduce bandwidth consumption. The proposed solution is capable of intercepting the data, redirecting it to a processing node that is allocated between the end device and the server, in order to apply features that reduce the amount of data on the network. The architecture has been validated through a prototype using video surveillance. This area of application was selected due to the high bandwidth requirement to transfer video data. Results show that in the best scenario is possible to obtain about 97% of bandwidth gain, which can improve the quality of services by offering better response times. ©2017 by SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications, Lda. Autonomous systems are able to make decisions and potentially take actions without direct human intervention, which requires some knowledge about the system and its environment as well as goal-oriented reasoning. In computer systems, one can derive such behavior from the concept of a rational agent with autonomy (“control over its own actions”), reactivity (“react to events from the environment”), proactivity (“act on its own initiative”), and sociality (“interact with other agents”) as fundamental properties \n[1]\n. Autonomous systems will undoubtedly pervade into our everyday lives, and we will find them in a variety of domains and applications including robotics, transportation, health care, communications, and entertainment to name a few. \nThe articles in this month’s special issue cover concepts and fundamentals, architectures and techniques, and applications and case studies in the exciting area of self-awareness in autonomous systems.

Smart mobility is an emerging concept characterized by the use of disruptive technologies, such as cloud computing, Big Data and artificial intelligence. In this paper we propose a FIWARE-based component focus on improving the data analysis process, from data generated in services and applications existing in the smart mobility context. Our proposal aims to provide features that allows the development of solutions from the industry 4.0 concept and smart cities. Firstly, we briefly contextualize these terms, then we describe the characteristics and architectural design of our FIWARE component, highlighting how it can improve the support to smart services and applications. We also present real application scenarios where this component can be applied, specially considering the Brazilian cities. © 2017 IEEE.

- A process for accurate text recognition of generic identification documents (ID) over cloud computing is presented. It consists of two steps, first, a smartphone camera takes a picture of the ID, which is sent to a cloud server;second, the image is processed by the server and the results are sent back to the smartphone. In the cloud server, image rectification, text detections and word recognition methods are combined to extract all non-manuscript information from the ID. Rectification is based on an improved Hough Transform and the text detection approach consists of a contrast-enhanced Maximally Stable Extremal Region (MSER), using heuristics constraints to remove non-text regions. Experimental results demonstrate several advantages in the proposed process. © CSREA Press.

Service Level Agreement (SLA) is an essential tool for managing cloud computing services. The support of the security requirements through SLA is fundamental to achieve the full potential of the cloud computing paradigm. In this paper we present how security requirements are addressed in a cloud computing SLA. Furthermore, a unified SLA lifecycle for cloud computing services is proposed. The relationship between security requirements and the lifecycle proposed is analyzed. Through the analysis, the current cloud computing security requirements scenario for the SLA context is identified in addition to its research opportunities.

Energy inefficiencies in current networks provide both challenges and opportunities for energy saving. Recently, there are many works focusing on minimizing energy cost from the routing perspective. However, most existing work view them as optimization problems and solve them in a centralized manner such as with a solver or using approximations. In this paper, we focus on a network-wide bi-objective optimization problem, which simultaneously minimizes the total energy consumption using speed scaling and the total traffic delay. We propose a hop-by-hop dynamic distributed routing scheme for the implementation of this network-wide optimization problem. Our scheme is more practical to realize in large distributed networks compared with current centralized energy minimization methods. We can also achieve near global optimal in a distributed manner, while most used shortest path routing protocols such as OSPF cannot make it. Our routing scheme is totally distributed and maintains loop-free routes in every instant. Simulations conducted in real data sets show that the distributed loop-free routing scheme converges to near Pareto optimal values. Also, our method outperforms the widely applied shortest path routing strategy by 30% in energy saving.

In this paper, the off-body performance of a single-input single-output (SISO) system was evaluated in Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) situations and compared with measurements done with a clear Line of Sight (LOS) link. The obstructed link study takes into account the human shadowing effect, usually caused by close by miners interrupting the transmitter-receiver link. Measurement campaigns were performed using Monopole antennas in an underground gold mine. The off-body channels were characterized in terms of the channel impulse response, RMS delay spread, and coherence bandwidth. The channel capacity was determined using the well-known Shannon formula for LOS and NLOS situations. The variation of the channel parameters in the different measurement scenarios was analyzed.

The management and operation of a Self-Organizing Network (SON)-enabled mobile network still requires considerable human effort. On the one hand, SON Functions need to be configured through low-level parameters in order to control the optimization of the network. On the other hand, an operator wants to steer the system with solely technical objectives, and the underlying network should be adapted accordingly. This opens up a gap in network management that is currently closed manually. This paper presents an approach that overcomes the manual gap between technical objectives and SON Functions by choosing the best values for the SON Functions' configurations automatically. Main advantage of this approach is that it allows to manage a system at a high level of abstraction and, at the same time, reduces manual effort. The approach is explained by applying it in a case study in the field of mobile networks with four SON Functions, namely Mobility Load Balancing (MLB), Coverage and Capacity Optimization (CCO), Energy Savings Management (ESM) and Mobility Robustness Optimization (MRO).
