Virtualization is a key technique to make an environment easier to manage in terms of resource allocation. MapReduce is a programming model that provides an abstraction to perform distributed computation for large datasets. Hadoop is a well-known framework that offers an open source implementation for this model. Combining Hadoop and virtualization techniques in cloud-computing environments can unveil great potential, especially for big data context. However, running MapReduce jobs on virtual machines has indicated performance issues not solved yet. In this paper we present and discuss three scenarios regarding Hadoop topology in a cloud infrastructure. The first scenario proposes to allocate Hadoop daemons in a fully virtualized environment, the second scenario presents a hybrid environment, and the third scenario suggests to virtualize only MapReduce *** also report results from a series of tests allocating Hadoop daemons in a fully virtualized environment. Results show that adding virtual machines to the cluster causes an overhead, decreases the efficiency of CPU utilization, and shortens the time slots for the MapReduce jobs.

Current Internet traffic comprises diverse service requirements. Service providers differentiate connections characteristics according to demand's requirements and pricing policy. In this paper we propose a differentiated service methodology that implements constrained resources allocation according to demand's priority level for WDM networks. With our proposed mechanism higher priority connections are guaranteed a larger amount of resources, still, lower priority demands are guaranteed a minimum level of service.

A business model for video transmission services is proposed that uses the Dynamic Adaptation Streaming over HTTP (DASH) mechanism using different versions of the same video. These video versions are encoded using different parameters, such as spatial resolution or number of frames per second. The transmission of each video version depends on the capabilities of the network at the end user point. The business model proposed considers different costs for each version of video fragments transmitted. The costs of video resolution upgrade are predefined by the service provider and used during the video streaming. Also, in this model, the user can either accept or reject an upgrade. Subjective tests were performed using different spatial resolutions of the same video, in which the interest level of users to perform a video upgrade is evaluated. Furthermore, the network architecture of the proposed solution is presented and the technical feasibility to deploy the proposed solution in commercial networks is shown. As a consequence, the proposed solution can improve the earnings of the video service provider. Copyright © 2013 IARIA.

Crowdsourcing has gained increasing interest during the last years as means for solving complex tasks with the help of a flexible group of contributors. The crowd can contribute with collecting data in the field, completing map information or votes for ideas or products. Even though the participation of large numbers of users with heterogeneous devices in crowdsourcing is a highly recurrent task, generic infrastructures for crowdsourcing can be hardly found. Especially the management of users, mobile devices and contributed data has to be repetitively implemented in new projects. To ease the development of crowdsourcing applications, in this paper we propose a generic platform for crowdsourcing supporting diverse crowdsourcing scenarios, the ability to handle large numbers of users and the involvement of heterogeneous mobile devices. The evaluation is based on scalability and performance experiments in order to demonstrate the feasibility of our approach. Copyright © 2013 ACM.

The paradigm of virtual world environment arises as an useful tool in diverse fields such as e-Health or education, where they provide a new way of communication and interaction with end users. Networking capabilities play an important role in these systems, which motivates the study and understanding of the gaming network traffic. The present work focuses on Open Wonderland, a system that provides the basis for the development of Networked Virtual Environments with educational or health purposes. The goal of this paper is defining a testing environment and modelling the behaviour of the outgoing network traffic at the server side. © 2013 IEEE.

Collective operations, such as allreduce, are widely treated as the critical limiting factors in achieving high performance in massively parallel applications. Conventional host-based implementations, which introduce a large amount of point-to-point communications, are less efficient in large-scale systems. To address this issue, we propose a design of switch chip to accelerate collective operations, especially the allreduce operation. The major advantage of the proposed solution is the high scalability since expensive point-to-point communications are avoided. Two kinds of allreduce operations, namely block-allreduce and burst-allreduce, are implemented for short and long messages, respectively. We evaluated the proposed design with both a cycle-accurate simulator and a FPGA prototype system. The experimental results prove that switch-based allreduce implementation is quite efficient and scalable, especially in large- scale systems. In the prototype, our switch-based implementation significantly outperforms the host- based one, with a 16 times improvement in MPI time on 16 nodes. Furthermore, the simulation shows that, upon scaling from 2 to 4096 nodes, the switch-based allreduce latency only increases slightly by less than 2 us. © 2013 IEEE.

For service management systems the early recognition of situations that necessitate a rebinding or a migration of services is an important task. To describe these situations on differing levels of detail and to allow their recognition even if only incomplete information is available, we employ the ontology language OWL 2 and the reasoning services defined for it. In this paper we provide a case study on the performance of state of the art OWL 2 reasoning systems for answering class queries and conjunctive queries modeling the relevant situations for service rebinding or migration in the differing OWL 2 profiles.

Big data refers to large amounts of data, normally in unstructured forms, such as text, sensor data, audio, video, log files, and more. When collecting from a large number of nodes, sensor networks can produce large data sets. Climate and sensor network data are applied to assist the decision making process in agricultural production. In this paper we present the main aspects of a prototype to test Hadoop framework applied to process climate related data sets in a cloud computing infrastructure.

Security is a key concern when adopting cloud technology. Cloud solutions include not only issues inherited from related technologies, such as virtualization and distributed computing, but also new concerns associated to complexity of the cloud ecosystem, composed by the cloud entities and their interactions. One of the concerns is related to authentication and authorization in the cloud in order to provide robust mechanisms to identify entities and establish their permissions and roles in the cloud, controlling resource usage and promoting accounting and isolation. This paper identifies the state of the art in terms of credential management focusing on the cloud ecosystem. It proposes a credential classification and a framework for studying and developing solutions in this context, unifying concepts related to cloud deployment models, service types, entities and lifecycle controls.
