Nowadays, hybrid AC/DC microgrids (HMG) are growing in popularity because of human needs and their benefits. They are composed of the interconnection of a DC microgrid (MG) and an AC MG, and each MG is constituted by generation, energy storage, and consumption technologies. This study develops a new control strategy for an HMG consisting of a DC MG and an AC MG interconnected through a bidirectional power converter. The AC MG is composed of AC loads, a photovoltaic (PV) generator and a battery bank. The DC MG is made up of a hydrogen system, DC loads, wind turbine (WT) and ultracapacitor (UC). The HMG is evaluated under different conditions in an experimental setup constituted by an OPAL-RT 4512 unit and a Raspberry Pi microcontroller. This experimental setup permits to execute the HMG in real time and to validate the results obtained. Finally, the control system developed for this HMG presents a satisfactory behaviour under different working conditions. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Automated engineered-stone silicosis screening and staging using Deep Learning with X-rays

Silicosis, a debilitating occupational lung disease caused by inhaling crystalline silica, continues to be a significant global health issue, especially with the increasing use of engineered stone (ES) surfaces containing high silica content. Traditional diagnostic methods, dependent on radiological interpretation, have low sensitivity, especially, in the early stages of the disease, and present variability between evaluators. This study explores the efficacy of deep learning techniques in automating the screening and staging of silicosis using chest X-ray images. Utilizing a comprehensive dataset, obtained from the medical records of a cohort of workers exposed to artificial quartz conglomerates, we implemented a preprocessing stage for rib-cage segmentation, followed by classification using state-of-the-art deep learning models. The segmentation model exhibited high precision, ensuring accurate identification of thoracic structures. In the screening phase, our models achieved near-perfect accuracy, with ROC AUC values reaching 1.0, effectively distinguishing between healthy individuals and those with silicosis. The models demonstrated remarkable precision in the staging of the disease. Nevertheless, differentiating between simple silicosis and progressive massive fibrosis, the evolved and complicated form of the disease, presented certain difficulties, especially during the transitional period, when assessment can be significantly subjective. Notwithstanding these difficulties, the models achieved an accuracy of around 81% and ROC AUC scores nearing 0.93. This study highlights the potential of deep learning to generate clinical decision support tools to increase the accuracy and effectiveness in the diagnosis and staging of silicosis, whose early detection would allow the patient to be moved away from all sources of occupational exposure, therefore constituting a substantial advancement in occupational health diagnostics. © 2025 The Authors

The paradigm of virtual world environment arises as an useful tool in diverse fields such as e-Health or education, where they provide a new way of communication and interaction with end users. Networking capabilities play an important role in these systems, which motivates the study and understanding of the gaming network traffic. The present work focuses on Open Wonderland, a system that provides the basis for the development of Networked Virtual Environments with educational or health purposes. The goal of this paper is defining a testing environment and modelling the behaviour of the outgoing network traffic at the server side. © 2013 IEEE.

The increasing trend in the percentage of older people among the European population, and in the number of older people living alone, poses a number of challenges, some of which can be addressed from digital solutions monitoring and supporting comfort, physical activity and health. Nowadays, research efforts seek to ensure, through technology-based solutions, the quality of life as people age and the needs that arise during the process. The home environment can host modern home-automation solutions supporting information gathering, monitoring and early intervention to prevent risks to lead to major consequences. Smart homes can thus make a positive contribution to the Active and Healthy Ageing paradigm. However, one of the biggest limitations preventing smart homes from being a reality is the lack of interoperability among different-vendor devices or the fact that most of the commertial solutions rely on cloud-based solutions. This work faces these limitations and proposes an architecture that, based on the use of commercial sensors, ensures that information is gathered and processed locally, independently of the commercial solution provided by the manufacturer of the device. The architecture has been experimentally validated by implementing a monitoring system based on environmental and security sensors interconnected by means of the ZigBee wireless communication protocol. The proposed system also supports caregivers caring for their older people who will be granted access to collected data. Thus, the system offers a remote monitoring system based on an information storage and visualisation solution. This system is intended to provide a solution that improves the quality of life and extends the time of independent living at home for older people. © 2022 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Currently, microgrid clusters (MGC) are being increasingly used owing to their benefits and human needs. MGs can be composed of power generation, consumption, and storage elements. They permit the combination of DC and AC technologies, even for a single microgrid (MG). In this paper, a new control system of a MGC consisting of two MGs connected to the main grid is developed. One of them is a DC MG that is composed of a wind turbine (WT), electrolyzer (EZ), ultracapacitor (UC), fuel cell (FC) and DC loads. The other MG is an AC MG, which is made up of a PV generator, a battery bank and AC loads. The MGC is tested under different working conditions in an experimental setup composed of a Raspberry Pi microcontroller, an OPAL-RT 4510 unit and a PC host. The experimental setup allows the system to run in real time and validate the results obtained. Finally, the control system implemented in the MGC exhibits a correct behaviour under different conditions, according to the results obtained. © 2023 IEEE.

Nowadays, the use of quasi-Z-source cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverters (qZS-CHBMLI) in photovoltaic (PV) has gained their attention. They permit the single-stage power transformation of a PV generator adjusting the DC voltage independently in each module to operate each PV generator at maximum power. This paper develops a new control strategy that allows the system to continue operating after a fault in a module, by increasing the DC voltage in the operating modules. The control strategy is employed to a grid-connected qZS-CHBMLI, which consists of three cascaded qZSI powered by independent 4.8 kW PV cells. Under several operating circumstances, the proposed control system is evaluated. The results demonstrate how the control strategy applied to the system successfully reacts to the failure of a module. © 2023 IEEE.

In response to growing energy demands and concerns about climate change, microgrid clusters (MGCs) are gaining widespread attention. Their ability to integrate technologies for energy consumption, generation, and storage in AC, DC or a compound of both offer a high degree of flexibility and resiliency. This research introduces a new control strategy for an MGC composed of two MGs interconnected to a local grid via a point of common coupling. The first one is a DC MG comprising an ultracapacitor (UC), wind turbine (WT), DC loads and hydrogen system. The second is an AC MG with a battery bank, AC loads and photovoltaic (PV) generator. The control strategy employs local controllers for each device and distributed control via two control agents, coordinating the power distribution among the energy storage systems (ESSs) of the MGC. This system is tested and validated on a real-time experimental setup, using two Raspberry Pi microcontrollers and an OPAL-RT unit, under different working conditions. The results obtained in this work show that the control strategy implemented in the MGC works correctly. © 2024 IEEE.

According to the Internet of Services vision, composite services are created by composing services to complex business processes. The relationships between services in a composition are defined by Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Managing composite SLAs is a complex task which is currently performed manually. In this paper we present an approach for automating the management of composite SLAs by exploiting the explicit knowledge about dependencies between composed services. We define a formal model for representing a set of dependencies. A set of algorithms exploits this information to automate tasks of composite SLA management. These tasks are the validation of SLAs during negotiation, the evaluation of SLA renegotiation requests and the evaluation of SLA violations with regard to their effects on other services. We have validated our approach based on a logistics scenario. We present results with respect to performance and a set of test cases demonstrating the added value of dependency information based automated SLA management. © 2010 IEEE.
