Exploring the multi-core architecture is an important issue to obtaining high performance in parallel and distributed discrete-event simulations. However, the simulation features must fit on parallel programming model in order to increase the performance. In this paper we show our experience developing a hybrid MPI+OpenMP version of our parallel and distributed discreteevent individual-oriented fish schooling simulator. In the hybrid approach developed, we fit our simulation features in the following manner: the communication between the Logical Processes happens via message passing whereas the computing of the individuals by OpenMP threads. In addition, we propose a new data structure for partitioning the fish clusters which avoid the critical section in OpenMP code. As a result, the hybrid version significantly improves the total execution time for huge quantity of individuals, because it decreases both the communication and management of processes overhead, whereas it increases the utilization of cores with sharing of resources. © The Authors. Current performance analysis and tuning tools must be able to improve the performance of large-scale parallel applications. To be effective, such analysis and tuning tools must be scalable and be able to manage the dynamic behaviour of parallel applications. This work presents a scalable solution for dynamic tuning. This approach is based on a hierarchical performance analysis architecture that uses a novel information abstraction mechanism to solve local and global performance problems. We have developed a prototype implementation of the proposed analysis architecture making use of the MRNet framework. Scalability experiments have been performed using this prototype with up to 6400 application tasks. The results obtained show that the proposed analysis architecture will provide the scalability required to carry out dynamic tuning of large-scale parallel applications. © 2013 IEEE.

The possibility of having available massive computer resources to users opens ideas for the future of interoperability between multiple infrastructure systems. This wide system should be composed of multiple high performance resource clusters and their users should share them to solve big scientific problems. These resources have a dynamic behavior and to reach the expected performance indexes it is necessary to tune the application in an automatic and dynamic way. The MATE environment was designed to tune parallel applications running on a cluster. This paper presents the key ideas for tracking down application process in a wide distributed environment like Computational Grids. We explain how to enable the use of MATE for dynamic application optimizations in such systems. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

Distributed event simulation (DES) is a useful tool for high performance simulation. This type of simulation is recommended for complex models or when a high degree of model detail is needed. Fish School is an individual oriented model for fish movement and the model's complexity and computing requirements make it suitable for this type of simulation. The present work shows the design, development and distributed simulation analysis applied to individual oriented models. In order to accomplish the analysis, experimental results are compared. The experimental framework is based on different developments using two communications libraries (PVM and MPI) and two types of distributed simulation techniques (optimistic and conservative). © 2005 Frydman, LSIS.

This paper presents the results of an ongoing project that is being carried out by the Research Group in Individual Oriented Modelling (IoM) of the University Autonoma of Barcelona (UAB) with the participation of Hospital Emergency department (ED) Staff Teams. Its general objective is creating a simulator that, used as decision support system (DSS), aids the heads of the ED to make the best informed decisions possible. The defined ED model is a pure Agent-Based Model, formed entirely of the rules governing the behaviour of the individual agents which populate the system. The actions of agents and the communication between them are represented using Moore state machines extended to include probabilistic transitions. The model also includes the environment in which agents move and interact. With the aim of verifying the proposed model an initial simulation has been created using NetLogo.

Away to improve air quality (AQ) in urban areas consists of including more green infrastructures. To evaluate their effects, air quality simulations are employed to examine the behavior of pollutants and their dispersion patterns influenced by meteorological conditions. To study either the advantages or the drawbacks of modifying the green morphology of a city, the first step is to create a set of hypothetical green land-use maps that will later be used as input for air quality simulations. In this paper, we present an automatic green land-use generator, which uses the Monte Carlo method and Moore Neighborhood to create coherent land-use maps. These maps will be later on used to run simulations that show the impact on AQ of adding more green space to our cities. © 2023 IEEE.

Regarding energy efficiency, resource management in complex hard- And software systems that is based on the information typically available to the OS alone does not yield best results. Nevertheless, general-purpose resource management should stay independent of application-specific information. To resolve this dilemma, we propose a generic, ontologybased approach to resource scheduling that is context-aware and takes information of running applications into account. The central task here is to recognize situations that might necessitate an adaptation of resource scheduling. This task is performed by logical reasoning over OWL ontologies. Our initial study shows that current OWL 2 EL reasoner systems can perform recognition of exemplary situations relevant to resource management within 4 seconds. Copyright 2014 ACM.

The fast adaptation of Cloud computing has led to an increase in novel information technology threats. The targets of these new threats range from large scale distributed system, such as the Large Hadron Collider by the CERN, to industrial (water, power, electricity, oil, gas, etc.) distributed systems, i.e. SCADA systems. The use of automated tools for vulnerability assessment is quite attractive, but while these tools can find common problems in a program's source code, they miss a significant number of critical and complex vulnerabilities. In addition, middleware systems frequently base their security on mechanisms such as authentication, authorization, and delegation. While these mechanisms have been studied in depth and can control key resources, they are not enough to assure that all application's resources are safe. Therefore, security of distributed systems have been placed under the watchful eye of security practitioners in government, academia, and industry. To tackle the problem of assessing the security of critical middleware systems, we propose a new automated vulnerability assessment approach, called Attack Vector Analyzer (AvA), which is able to automatically hint at which middleware components should be assessed and why. AvA is based on automating part of the First Principles Vulnerability Assessment, an analyst-centric (manual) methodology that has been used successfully to evaluate many production middleware systems. AvA's results are language-independent, provide a comprehensive assessment attack vector in the middleware, and it is based on the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) system, a widely-use labeling of security weaknesses. Our results are contrasted against a previous manual vulnerability assessment of the CrossBroker grid resource manager, and corroborate which middleware components should be assessed and why. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

The most important aspect that affects the reliability of environmental simulations is the un- certainty on the parameter settings describing the environmental conditions, which may involve important biases between simulation and reality. To relieve such arbitrariness, a two-stage pre- diction method was developed, based on the adjustment of the input parameters according to the real observed evolution. This method enhances the quality of the predictions, but it is very demanding in terms of time and computational resources needed. In this work, we describe a methodology developed for response time assessment in the case of fire spread prediction, based on evolutionary computation. In addition, a parallelization of one of the most used fire spread simulators, FARSITE, was carried out to take advantage of multicore architectures. This al- lows us to design proper allocation policies that significantly reduce simulation time and reach successful predictions much faster. A multi-platform performance study is reported to analyze the benefits of the methodology.

Hybrid Message Logging. Combining advantages of Sender-based and Receiver-based Approaches

With the growing scale of High Performance Computing applications comes an increase in the number of interruptions as a consequence of hardware failures. As the tendency is to scale parallel executions to hundred of thousands of processes, fault tolerance is becoming an important matter. Uncoordinated fault tolerance protocols, such as message logging, seem to be the best option since coordinated protocols might compromise applications scalability. Considering that most of the overhead during failure-free executions is caused by message logging approaches, in this paper we propose a Hybrid Message Logging protocol. It focuses on combining the fast recovery feature of pessimistic receiver-based message logging with the low protection overhead introduced by pessimistic sender-based message logging. The Hybrid Message Logging aims to reduce the overhead introduced by pessimistic receiver-based approaches by allowing applications to continue normally before a received message is properly saved. In order to guarantee that no message is lost, a pessimistic sender-based logging is used to temporarily save messages while the receiver fully saves its received messages. Experiments have shown that we can achieve up to 43% overhead reduction compared to a pessimistic receiver- based logging approach.
