Nowadays the information of future rates of systems produced in series appears to be crucial to the production plan, especially for remanufacturing departments. Several questions need to be answered: the number of cores to remanufacture the condition of those cores as well as the number of replacement system the market requires. Based on a bivariate prognosis model, a multivariate model is developed to take more variables of stress in field into account. What's more, the fitting process has been optimized by using neural networks. This paper presents all necessary tools to perform a multivariate lifetime prognosis as well as the implementation in MATLAB. © 2019 European Safety and Reliability Association. Data flow processing is a common task of embedded systems which is usually modeled as a pipeline. Errors in a block of this pipeline can be propagated through it thus leading to unexpected and erroneous behaviors. For safety related applications, this pipeline has to be able to identify and react to failures. The DMOSES model-driven development method uses deterministic UML activities to describe and implement data flow processing. This method ensures deterministic behavior of concurrent processing. Design by Contract defines formal, precise and verifiable interfaces for software components. We propose a development method for safe data flow processing based on the integration of this concept in deterministic UML activities. This integration allows the identification of errors by detection of contracts violation. This paper presents an extension of the DMOSES tool for contracts verification at the model level and their monitoring at runtime. © 2011 IEEE.

An advanced medicine box monitoring, analysis and control system is proposed in this paper. The latter design is based on a smart and safe medical box that assists patients in taking their pills treatment on time. Two main functionalities characterize this system: safety which assures the wellbeing of the patient and the good functioning of the system by duplicating the electrical components and the security that helps keeping the medication out of the reach of the children by automatically looking the medical box whenever the patient takes his pills. This system can also be monitored by the patient parents as it will be linked to a phone application. This application will be used to configure the medical box by calculating the weight of each pill, setting the schedule of medical intake, alarming the user of the number of remaining pills, generating alarms whenever the patient does not take the required number of pills or doesn't take them at all, and so on... This system was implemented and tested by more than 50 patients who were taking several medication types (each one of them takes one medication only) and were using different mobile phone. The overall results were very acceptable with a faulty alarm generation below 3%. © 2018 IEEE.

— Cyber Physical systems (CPS) are predestined for use in Industry 4.0 applications. However, the interaction between the virtual and physical world also creates risks that is essential to be controlled. In highly automated industrial systems, for example, robots are used in confined spaces together with working humans. The risk posed by such systems endangers, among others, the people working there. This paper presents an approach to ensure the safety of the situation described above, which makes the workspace of industrial robots safer by implementing a safe workspace detection system. This system comprises several detection sensors implemented in a 2oo3 safety architecture and a Safety system on a Chip (SSoC) based on a safe 1oo2 system architecture. The safety-related redundancy provided by the detection and calculation elements enables a safe position detection of the robotic arm in the 3-dimensional space. The presented system monitors the position of the robotic arm and thus supports the safety of the surrounding objects and the people working there by leading to a safe standstill or to a reduced speed of movement of the robot as soon as the defined and permitted working space is left. © 2020, North Atlantic University Union NAUN. Diagnostics is one of the significant parameters of functional safety which concerns itself with revealing dangerous incidents that might impede the operation of safety systems. Diagnostic coverage factor (DC) is defined as a metric for diagnostics in that DC is one of the most important design parameters to measure the effectiveness of safety protection systems. This study addresses how diagnostics impacts proof test interval (TI) when the system is halted completely;a thorough maintenance and changes in parts are performed. Besides this, the relationship between average probability of failure on demand (PFDavg), DC, TI and mean time to failure (MTTF) are presented for 1oo2 and 1oo2D system architectures. © 2014 IEEE.

The authors present their latest research results and developments of a code generator for Matlab / Simulink block diagrams and to download the generated code onto safety related systems such as a safety PLC (Programmable Logic Controller). An example demonstrates the different stages for code generation, evaluation and conversion before such code can be used in process industries. systematic approaches are necessary when such source code is embedded in process units. To the best knowledge of the authors, Matlab/Simulink source code has not been transferred on safety PLC before. Matlab / Simulink is an advanced and matured programming environment, especially for simulations of engineering processes and systems. Hardly no hardware exists, when it comes to download the developed algorithms and to use it in real world applications and so far this approach is the only one for using developed and tested Matlab / Simulink software on an safety related system. © 2008 IEEE.

This paper presents a simulation environment, which is a C++/systemC based integrated framework for functional verification of designed components or electronic architectures and enhances the existing computer architecture simulation tool named sefca. As the VHDL sources are converted to systemC it is sufficient for verification engineers to have a fundamental knowledge of C++ and the systemC library. The testbench framework uses the same graphical user interface (GUI) based on the wxPython library, which was presented in the sefca tool. Verification of the design is supported by the systemC verification library (SCV). Inter-Process-Communication is used to send the stimuli for simulation input from the GUI to the simulation process and the simulation results back to the online viewer in the GUI. With these enhancements sefca becomes a universal tool for testing the software and the hardware part of a new design at the same time. Working on the transaction level model (TLM) the proposed methodology offers a high performance and a high level of abstraction.

The calculation of "Probability of Failure on Demand" (PFH) according to IEC 61508 shows for a 1oo1 and a 1oo2 system using the same initial values that - as expected - a 1oo2 system is a better safety integrity system than a 1oo1 system. This means, that a 1oo2 system has a lower probability of failure than a 1oo1 system. Comparing the same systems operating in a high demand or continuous mode of operation, there will be some cases, especially for systems with high diagnostics, where a 1oo1 system has a lower ¿Probability of Failure per Hour¿ (PFH) value than a 1oo2 system, using the PFH formulas according to IEC 61508. Using the equation according to IEC 61508, it is also possible that the PFH value is apparently better the longer the system runs either in the high mode or continuous mode of operation. Both results are irreproducible in industrial reality. Therefore, this paper will analyze first what conditions are necessary to get a hazard event when using a PFH system. Only those cases are considered in the modified PFH calculation, in which indeed a hazard event occurs. In a second step, it presents a new approach with the help of plausible arguments in order to calculate the PFH value of a PFH system considering a high diagnostic and a very low failure rate. The presented approach can also be correctly verified with mathematics using the advanced Markov model also described in this paper.

Software-Engineering is very important today. In industry (specifically by software critical system) it is important to produce high reliable software, i.e. software with low proportion of faults. To produce such reliable software, a long handling process is required, and because this process consumes a large amount of time and resources to achieve the desired reliability goals it is useful to use Software Reliability Stochastic Models to predict the required software testing time. In this paper a new approach to reflecting the residual number of critical failures in software-systems is introduced. There are currently very few processes enabling us to predict the reliability of the critical failures or the critical failure rate for critical systems. Furthermore, we will focus on distinguishing the critical failures in the software. We will thus distinguish both critical as well as non-critical failures in the Software. Therefore it is important to divide the process into two classes, detection- and correction class. To develop an approach it is necessary to determine corresponding distribution functions and model assumptions.

The common cause failures (ccf) are the biggest part when calculating the probability of failure for redundant safety integrity systems. A ccf can occur, when a random hardware failure leads to a failure of several components. There are several methods to calculate the probability of ccf. Three models will be shown in this paper, with the help of which the beta-factor will be calculated. The ccf ratio for the calculation of the overall probability of failure is defined with the beta-factor.
