Analyzing the behaviors of pedestrians and cyclists in interactions with autonomous systems using controlled experiments: A literature review

Urban transportation is set to undergo a profound transformation with the advent of autonomous systems such as autonomous vehicles, automated buses, and sidewalk delivery robots. To promote safe, sustainable, and inclusive urban mobility, understanding and predicting the behaviors of pedestrians and cyclists, including their intentions, decisions, and movements, when they interact with autonomous systems becomes crucial. Gaining a thorough understanding of these complex interactions can not only improve the safety, efficiency, and acceptance of autonomous systems but also enhance the design and implementation of these technologies. Through a comprehensive review of the literature spanning the years 2014 to 2023, we identify 99 articles that empirically investigate the interactions of humans and autonomous systems. Based on our overview of progress and challenges within this field, we further identify five research gaps that future research should address to enhance human-autonomous system interactions, including: (1) scaling up experimental scenarios to multi-user and multi-modal setups to better represent real-world challenges, (2) emphasizing safety-critical scenarios that are difficult to achieve in real-world environments by applying virtual reality, (3) incorporating diverse behavioral data from the human perspective to deepen the understanding of vulnerable road user behavior and decisions, (4) embracing continuous and real-time interaction to better predict dynamic future environments, and (5) enhancing the generalization ability to ensure realism and broad applicability. This review article offers valuable insights for the growing human-autonomous system research community, specifically those interested in leveraging controlled experiments to enhance the understanding and prediction of pedestrians' and cyclists' behaviors in future urban environments.

Comparison of edge computing methods in Internet of Things architectures for efficient estimation of indoor environmental parameters with Machine Learning

The large increase in the number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices have revolutionised the way data is processed, which added to the current trend from cloud to edge computing has resulted in the need for efficient and reliable data processing near the data sources using energy-efficient devices. Two methods based on low-cost edge-IoT architectures are proposed to implement lightweight Machine Learning (ML) models that estimate indoor environmental quality (IEQ) parameters, such as Artificial Neural Networks of Multilayer Perceptron type. Their implementation is based on centralised and distributed parallel IoT architectures, connected via wireless, which share commercial off-the-self modules for data acquisition and sensing, such as sensors for temperature, humidity, illuminance, CO2, and other gases. The centralised method uses a Graphics Processing Unit and the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport protocol, but the distributed method utilises low-performance ARM-based devices and the Message Passing Interface protocol. Although multiple IEQ parameters are measured, the training and testing of ML models is accomplished with experiments focused on small temperature and illuminance datasets to reduce data processing load, obtained from sudden spikes, square profiles and sawteeth test cases. The results show a high estimation performance with F-score and Accuracy values close to 0.95, and an almost theorical Speedup with a reduction in power consumption close to 37% in the distributed parallel approach. In addition, similar or slightly better performance is achieved compared to equivalent IoT architectures from related research, but error reduction of 35–76% is accomplished with an adequate balance between performance and energy efficiency. © 2024, CC BY.

This paper describes an academic project building on various state-of-the-art Industry 4.0 technologies. The project considers as the primary scenario the current problem behind the accumulation of biological waste in the vicinity of hospitals due to the COVID-19. To that end, a fully automated personal protective equipment recycling plant is developed using the Factory I/O simulation tool, TIA Portal, and Ignition. The project is considered to serve well as a reference for other Electrical Engineering undergraduates while complementing their training in skills such as design, automation, and supervision of industrial processes.

TAPEMAN: Towards an Optimal Data Gathering Mechanism in Wireless Sensor Networks

In this paper, we study the lifetime optimization problem using a mobile sink node in a storage-constrained wireless sensor network, and propose an optimal data gathering mechanism named (TAPEMAN) which runs in three steps: first a tight upper bound of the network lifetime is derived through analysis of energy consumption, then we generate a Traveling salesman problem (TSP) solution based on a 2-approximation $O(n^{2})$ algorithm. A judgment will be made about whether this solution is optimal. If the answer is yes, TAPEMAN terminates. If not, a novel data diffusion scheme is used to distribute data to neighboring nodes, in order to avoid data leaking. We prove that under some reasonable assumptions, our algorithm can achieve this upperbound. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed solution and substantiate the importance of using sink mobility for energy-constrained sensor networks.

Relip: Reliable in-Band Parallel Communication for Magnetic MIMO Wireless Power Transfer System

In magnetic resonant coupling (MRC) based wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, receiver (RX) feedback communication is promising to enhance the capability and efficiency of the system. Although some studies have explored in-band implementations with low overhead costs, it has not been comprehensively investigated. In this paper, we propose Relip, a Reliable layer-level in-band parallel feedback communication mechanism for MIMO MRC-WPT systems, which addresses the impact of RX-RX couplings (i.e., non-negligible interference from strong couplings and positive effects of relay phenomenon), and provides a theoretical analysis of communication reliability. Technically, we first devise an On-Off based two-phase modulation mechanism to achieve RX identification and dependency detection under relay phenomenon. Then, we utilize observed channel decomposability to collect group-level power transfer channel conditions for eliminating the interference caused by strong RX-RX couplings. Furthermore, we perform RX selection to optimize the trade-off between communication reliability and time overhead. We design and implement the Relip prototype and conduct extensive experiments. The results validate the effectiveness of our mechanism, i.e., Relip can provide ≥99% average decoding accuracy for concurrent feedback communication of 14 devices, achieving an 18.31% improvement compared to the state-of-the-art solution. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

This paper describes the design and testing process of PluriCards - a card deck used to promote conversations about sustainable and digital futures. We address an existing need in the Global North for alternative ways of thinking about sustainability, building on concepts from the Global South, like the Pluriverse. Presenting the rationale and usages of the deck with students and researchers, we offer examples of how disparate participants are brought together and engaged in foreseen shared research directions that relate to alternative futures. We propose that ICT researchers and students can use PluriCards to challenge the prevailing digital exceptionalism that certain aspects of ICT development are presently benefiting from.

Using Mobile Sinks in WSN: Computational Complexity and a Theoretical Bound

In this paper, we study the lifetime optimization problem in wireless sensor networks using mobile sink nodes. This problem is inherently difficult since we need to consider both sink scheduling and data routing. Through a simple case study we develop a novel notation named the Placement pattern (PP) to bound traffic patterns with candidate locations. This significantly decreases the number of elements needed to be scheduled. Based on the PP, we mathematically formulate this optimization problem as a Mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP), which is very tough and time consuming to solve. By proving that the problem is NP-complete, we point out that instead of seeking an optimal algorithm, heuristic algorithms, especially those with performance guarantee, would be much more desirable to develop. Furthermore, in order to help identify performance gains of heuristic algorithms proposed in the future, we develop a Linear programming (LP) formulation which serves as an upper bound by adopting a reformulation and relaxation technique.

Nowadays, the grid computing environment faces many difficulties executing new jobs, especially jobs requiring large resource requirements and long execution times. This motivates researchers and scholars to find cheap and fast methods to improve the efficiency of grid environments. One of the cheap and fast methods is to implement job scheduling algorithms based on cheap and fast techniques. This paper proposes a new job ranking backfilling algorithm based on the job's weight and back propagation neural network. To define the weight of the job, first, the proposed model will use a clustering algorithm to cluster the job's dataset into groups, and then the groups will be ranked using an experimental ranking equation. A discrete event simulator is used to validate the proposed algorithm's capability and robustness. The average results revealed that the new algorithm outperforms previous algorithms. The improvement of the studied metrics is between 1.19 and 6.30, respectively. The results proved that the proposed model is efficient and can be used with low overhead in a real environment.

Artificial Intelligence techniques, such as optimization algorithms, have become essential for success in many fields. Therefore, most researchers, especially in computer and engineering sciences, focused their efforts and abilities on adapting the optimization algorithms for solving various problems. This review introduces one of the recent nature-inspired optimization algorithms, called black widow optimization (BWO). This review highlights the main procedures of BWO, its strengths and weaknesses, the growth of BWO, the variants of BWO (i.e., binary, modification, and hybridization), and the efficiency of BWO in different fields and applications (i.e., feature selection, medical, image processing, engineering, IoT, power and energy, and networks). As a result, the review seeks to assist researchers who are interested in using the BWO to address their challenges. For instance, it could help manage large pilgrim crowds, enabling smoother ritual performances and overcoming potential difficulties they encounter. Accurate disease diagnosis in grape leaf analysis is heavily reliant on high-resolution (HR) images. To meet this need, we propose a model that incorporates the Enhanced Attention Block (EAB) to generate HR images for improved disease detection. The EAB employs advanced attention mechanisms and residual learning to effectively capture critical, spatial and channel-wise relationships. Proposed model is assessed using PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) and SSIM (Structural Similarity Index) metrics, yielding PSNR scores of 31. 902dB, 32.785dB, and 34. 853dB, and SSIM score of 0.8709, 0.9058, and 97.46 for factors 2,4 and 6 respectively. This proposed approach holds great potential for widespread implementation in disease detection across various plant species, allowing for timely and accurate interventions for plant health management and increasing industry productivity.
