Recent years have seen increased interest in solar as a popular renewable energy source. The adoption of solar energy is directed towards increasing research interest in the incorporation of solar energy estimation and forecasting in the current system. Solar irradiance is the sun’s energy incident on earth, and is dependent on many atmospheric parameters, mainly decided by clouds. The use of a Ground-based sky imaging system is the best for forecasting and estimating for near-real-time temporal spectrum. However, creating efficient solar estimation models for edge devices is still a relatively unexplored field. This paper captures the essence of bringing edge computing on devices for solar estimation on ground-based infrared sky images by proposing a novel knowledge distillation method for enhancing lightweight CNN-regression models. In our study, we leveraged a MobilenetV2-based Teacher model and transferred the knowledge into a simple student model by introducing a sigmoid-based loss in the Knowledge Distillation algorithm. The proposed solution shows an impressive reduction of the Mean Square Error (MSE) of the model from 3015.63 to 2540.67. This research advances the field of solar irradiance estimation by emphasizing the importance of creating efficient and edge device deployable models in this context.

This paper presents a framework addressing the challenge of global localization in autonomous mobile robotics by integrating LiDAR-based descriptors and Wi-Fi fingerprinting in a pre-mapped environment. This is motivated by the increasing demand for reliable localization in complex scenarios, such as urban areas or underground mines, requiring robust systems able to overcome limitations faced by traditional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based localization methods. By leveraging the complementary strengths of LiDAR and Wi-Fi sensors used to generate predictions and evaluate the confidence of each prediction as an indicator of potential degradation, we propose a redundancy-based approach that enhances the system’s overall robustness and accuracy. The proposed framework allows independent operation of the LiDAR and Wi-Fi sensors, ensuring system redundancy. By combining the predictions while considering their confidence levels, we achieve enhanced and consistent performance in localization tasks. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Hardware-Efficient Preparation of Graph States on Near-Term Quantum computers

Highly entangled quantum states are an ingredient in numerous applications in quantum computing. However, preparing these highly entangled quantum states on currently available quantum computers at high fidelity is limited by ubiquitous errors. Besides improving the underlying technology of a quantum computer, the scale and fidelity of these entangled states in near-term quantum computers can be improved by specialized compilation methods. In this work, the compilation of quantum circuits for the preparation of highly entangled architecture-specific graph states is addressed by defining and solving a formal model. Our model incorporates information about gate cancellations, gate commutations, and accurate gate timing to determine an optimized graph state preparation circuit. Up to now, these aspects have only been considered independently of each other, typically applied to arbitrary quantum circuits. We quantify the quality of a generated state by performing stabilizer measurements and determining its fidelity. We show that our new method reduces the error when preparing a seven-qubit graph state by 3.5x on average compared to the state-of-the-art Qiskit solution. For a linear eight-qubit graph state, the error is reduced by 6.4x on average. The presented results highlight the ability of our approach to prepare higher fidelity or larger-scale graph states on gate-based quantum computing hardware. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. The old city of Mosul possesses a rich built heritage, featuring distinct architectural styles evolved, incorporating indigenous knowledge and expertise to address functional, climatic, economic, and construction requirements. Tragically, during the military operations in 2016-2017, Mosul Old City experienced extensive devastation, resulting in the loss of numerous landmarks and the irreplaceable built heritage of this city. However, digitization has emerged as a potent heritage preservation and restoration tool. It serves as a vital initial step in reviving deteriorated heritage by providing invaluable information to specialists. In light of this, the present study aims to regenerate the urban facades of Mosul's old city automatically, ensuring they retain their original characteristics. This objective will be accomplished by utilizing procedural modelling techniques and algorithms incorporating specific characteristics as constraints within the regeneration process. The research makes a notable contribution to digital architectural design by employing Shape Grammar analysis to derive rules. Subsequently, these rules are implemented through Python to facilitate the automatic generation of 750 heritage facade designs. Ultimately, the study demonstrates the feasibility of using procedural modelling to recreate the decimated urban fabric, ensuring the restored structures exhibit the same formal and structural characteristics as their predecessors. © 2024, The Authors. Power electronics circuits are useful for changing the waveform of a power supply from DC to AC, and these electronic circuits, of which the power inverter is one of them, play a crucial role when it comes to the management of renewable energy sources and the conversion of power supply waveforms. Research for artificial intelligence applications to predict the non-linear behavior of power inverters has garnered prominence recently. This study proposes a novel bidirectional long-short-term memory (BiLSTM) based deep learning model to predict the current value of the inverter based on the duty cycle, voltage values, motor rotation speed, and mean phase voltage of the inverter for the first time. The proposed model was compared to mainly used recurrent neural network (RNN) variations such as long-short term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU). According to the experimental findings, it was observed that the proposed model yielded lower mean absolute error (MAE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), root mean square error (RMSE), and higher r-squared (R2) results for predicting the current values of three phases. Therefore, it can be inferred that the proposed model is effective for current prediction.

This work analyses the synchronization requirements of the IFMIF-DONES infrastructure systems and proposes a cost-effective solution based on standard protocols: Network Time Protocol (NTP) and IEEE-1588 profiles, which are compliant with Ethernet networks. This approach simplifies the deployment of the timing system and its integration in already existing networks, being able to provide high scalability in the number of devices and limiting the number of time-aware devices or independent timing networks in the solution. The proposal takes full advantage of the capabilities of White-Rabbit technology to disseminate low phase noise frequency over the network without requiring wired radiofrequency solutions. Final considerations are made to understand the simplicity and viability of this solution.

The swift advancement of distributed computing has enhanced the support for big data and massive-scale models. Yet, delivering superior services to manage large and intricate network flows in data center networks remains a formidable challenge. In this paper, we present ReQ-tank, an intricate flow scheduling approach based on a multi-level feedback queue (MLFQ) devised to achieve flow prioritization and efficient flow scheduling. ReQ-tank employs a two-tier scheduling strategy: On the flow scheduling layer, priority queues are segmented into two categories, and the flows within high-priority queues follow a strict priority scheduling, while those in low-priority queues adhere to differential weighted Round-robin scheduling; On the packet scheduling layer, ReQ-tank modifies the priority of initially high-priority re-transmitted packets to facilitate fine-grained data packet scheduling. We carry out simulation experiments on web search workloads and data mining workloads. Experimental results demonstrate that ReQ-tank can curtail packet wait time in the network, significantly truncate the flow completion time (FCT) of delay-sensitive flows and counteract the issue of flow starvation in traditional strict priority queues. Consequently, ReQ-tank is deemed more suitable for complex distributed network applications.

This research presents a novel electromagnetic-based sensor for inline measurement of unmilled rice paddy moisture content in the rice mill factory. The proposed sensor has been designed based on the modified planar dipole structure at the operating frequency of 440 MHz. The unmilled rice dielectric constant properties have been studied and applied for characterizing the moisture content. The unmilled rice moisture content sensor system then has been designed consisting of the proposed sensor, a microwave signal generator, a microwave signal detector, and a microcontroller. The moisture content sensor system has been implemented and used for measuring the unmilled rice paddy moisture content in a real rice mill factory in Udon Thani province, Thailand. When compared with the commercial rice moisture content tool based on a capacitance technique, the proposed rice moisture content sensor system gives almost same results, which only about 4% difference has been found.

Methods for pitch analysis in contemporary popular music: highlighting pitch uncertainty in Primaal’s commercial works

We identify characteristic features of how pitch is manipulated for expressive purposes by Hyper Music, a mainstream commercial music company specialising in advertisement music for global corporations. The study shows that the use and organisation of pitch in the company’s ‘Primaal’ brand differs from Western classical music. Through interviews with producers and in-depth analysis of their work, we reveal that their methods centre on a conscious aim to construct a musical discourse based on pitch uncertainty, contrasting with the clear transmission of well-defined pitches in Western classical traditions. According to the Primaal producers, who acknowledge the influence of artists such as Kanye West and Daft Punk and use widely available technology, pitch uncertainty captures the listener’s attention. We provide analyses of musical excerpts demonstrating their approach, alongside descriptions of the tools and methods employed to achieve their expressive goals. These goals and methods are placed in a broader historical context, contrasting with fundamental principles of pitch organisation in Western music. Techniques used by Hyper Music to introduce and control pitch uncertainty include boosting upper partials, expressive use of inharmonicity, continuous pitch distributions around ‘poles’ tied to specific ‘modes’, and continuously evolving pitch. We examine these techniques from a psychoacoustic perspective, and conduct listening tests corroborating some of the observations. One challenging issue in daily solar radiation classification involves addressing the geometric differences in daily solar radiation patterns caused by geographic location and seasonal influences. A standardization method based on matrix transformation has been proposed to eliminate the daily geometric variations of solar radiation using classification for daily patterns of solar radiation. This method was tested using measurements taken at the Tokyo monitoring station from 2000 to 2021. Through the implementation of the proposed classification algorithm, this paper discerned twelve categories of daily clearness index distributions.
