One of the most notable features of collectible card games is deckbuilding, that is, defining a personalized deck before the real game. Deckbuilding is a challenge that involves a big and rugged search space, with different and unpredictable behaviour after simple card changes and even hidden information. In this paper, we explore the possibility of automated deckbuilding: a genetic algorithm is applied to the task, with the evaluation delegated to a game simulator that tests every potential deck against a varied and representative range of human-made decks. In these preliminary experiments, the approach has proven able to create quite effective decks, a promising result that proves that, even in this challenging environment, evolutionary algorithms can find good solutions.

Clinical processing of event-related potentials (ERPs) requires a precise synchrony between the stimulation and the acquisition units that are guaranteed by means of a physical link between them. This precise synchrony is needed since temporal misalignments during trial averaging can lead to high deviations of peak times, thus causing error in diagnosis or inefficiency in classification in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). Out of the laboratory, mobile EEG systems and BCI headsets are not provided with the physical link, thus being inadequate for acquisition of ERPs. In this study, we propose a method for the asynchronous detection of trials onset from raw EEG without physical links. We validate it with a BCI application based on the dichotic listening task. The user goal was to attend the cued auditory message and to report three keywords contained in it while ignoring the other message. The BCI goal was to detect the attended message from the analysis of auditory ERPs. The rate of successful onset detection in both synchronous (using the real onset) and asynchronous (blind detection of trial onset from raw EEG) was 73% with a synchronization error of less than 1ms. The level of synchronization provided by this proposal would allow home-based acquisition of ERPs with low cost BCI headsets and any media player unit without physical links between them. © 2016 World Scientific Publishing Company.

The analysis of the perceptual properties of texture plays a fundamental role in tasks like semantic description of images or content-based image retrieval using linguistic queries. In this paper, we propose to model these properties by means of fuzzy partitions defined on the domain of some representative measures. In particular, we have focused our study on the properties of coarseness, contrast and directionality, that play a fundamental role in the human perception of texture. In our approach, the number of fuzzy sets in the partitions, as well as the parameters of the membership functions, are calculated by taking into account the relationship between the computational values given by the measures and the human perception of the corresponding property. The performance of the proposed modelling has been analyzed by applying the obtained fuzzy partitions in several experiments. © 2015 IEEE.

The detection of astrophysical vτ is an important verification of the observed flux of high-energy neutrinos. A flavour ratio of approximately ve : vμ : vτ ≈ 1: 1: 1 is predicted for astrophysical neutrinos measured at Earth due to neutrino oscillations. On top of this, the vτ offers a unique channel for neutrino astronomy due to absence of an atmospheric vτ background contribution. When a vτ interacts it produces a particle cascade and often a τ lepton which in turn decays mainly into another cascade. This results in a double cascade signature. An excellent angular resolution can be achieved when both cascade vertices are reconstructed. The KM3NeT/ARCA detector, which is under construction in the Mediterranean sea, will be able to detect this signature due to its timing and spatial resolution for cascades. We will discuss the dedicated reconstruction algorithm and performance for reconstructing double cascades using KM3NeT. The discovery of a high-energy cosmic neutrino flux has paved the way for the field of neutrino astronomy. For a large part of the flux, the sources remain unidentified. The KM3NeT detector, which is under construction in the Mediterranean sea, is designed to determine their origin. KM3NeT will instrument a cubic kilometre of seawater with photomultiplier tubes that detect Cherenkov radiation from neutrino interaction products with nanosecond precision. For single cascade event signatures, KM3NeT already showed that it can reach degree-level resolutions, greatly increasing the use of these neutrinos for astronomy. In this contribution, we further refine the cascade reconstruction by making a more detailed model of the neutrinos events and including additional information on the hit times. The arrival time of light can be used to improve the identification of double cascade signatures from tau neutrinos, and the angular resolution of both single and double cascade signatures. We develop a novel technique to exploit the extensive data sets provided by underwater neutrino telescopes to gain information on bioluminescence in the deep sea. The passive nature of the telescopes gives us the unique opportunity to infer information on bioluminescent organisms without actively interfering with them. We propose a statistical method that allows us to reconstruct the light emission of individual organisms, as well as their location and movement. A mathematical model is built to describe the measurement process of underwater neutrino telescopes and the signal generation of the biological organisms. The Metric Gaussian Variational Inference algorithm is used to reconstruct the model parameters using photon counts recorded by the neutrino detectors. We apply this method to synthetic data sets and data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope. The telescope is located 40 km off the French coast and fixed to the sea floor at a depth of 2475 m. The runs with synthetic data reveal that we can reliably model the emitted bioluminescent flashes of the organisms. Furthermore, we find that the spatial resolution of the localization of light sources highly depends on the configuration of the telescope. Precise measurements of the efficiencies of the detectors and the attenuation length of the water are crucial to reconstruct the light emission. Finally, the application to ANTARES data reveals the first precise localizations of bioluminescent organisms using neutrino telescope data. © 2021, CC BY.

Current popular systems, Hadoop and Spark, cannot achieve satisfied performance because of the inefficient overlapping of computation and communication when running iterative big data applications. The pipeline of computing, data movement, and data management plays a key role for current distributed data computing systems. In this paper, we first analyze the overhead of shuffle operation in Hadoop and Spark when running PageRank workload, and then propose an event-driven pipeline and in-memory shuffle design with better overlapping of computation and communication as DataMPI- Iteration, an MPI-based library, for iterative big data computing. Our performance evaluation shows DataMPI-Iteration can achieve 9X-21X speedup over Apache Hadoop, and 2X-3X speedup over Apache Spark for PageRank and K-means.

The problem of dynamic stochastic shortest path is NP-hard. The transportation network of the city is dynamic and stochastic, the optimal problem of path is widely used in the fields of transportation, communication and computer network. The paper investigates the shortest path problem based on the genetic algorithm principle, an improved self adaptive genetic algorithm is proposed by encoding the chromosomal mode. We improved genetic algorithm by adjusting the encoding parameters. The experiments indicate that the improved genetic algorithm DRSP-GA could obtain the better solutions which adapt to new transportation rapidly in global optimization than A* algorithm and Dijkstra algorithm in the shortest path problem.

Architects typically tell stories about their design intentions and then translate the verbal descriptions into action-based commands in computer Aided Design tools. In other words, during the creative process the designer works in a "concepts space" that is different than the "properties space" available in the software virtual world of CAD tools. In this paper we propose to study the vocabulary of concepts used in architectural design by employing machine learning methods over large data-sets of architectural drawings and their storytelling descriptions. The intention is to computationally characterize the meaning of a set of high-level concepts in architectural design, which we call them as μ-concepts, in terms of a set of low-level properties of drawings. With such a correlation, new opportunities can be explored for radically different design tools that allow architects to design by operating over such high-level architectural concepts. Eventually, this will can also provide a novel way of understanding the mental process of architectural design through verbal concepts. As it is known only instrumental monitoring system, based on results of mathematical and computer (numerical) modeling (for instance, based on finite element analysis) and comparison with corresponding measured data allows high-performance control of actual state and the prediction of building safe operation. Moreover, instrumental monitoring of unique buildings without corresponding correct and adequate so-called 'monitoring-oriented' models has random nonsensical nature and therefore it is not of practical interest. This paper is devoted to theoretical methodology foundations of structural health monitoring (SHM). In order to review various corresponding approaches, development, modification and verification of parameterized finite building element models, so, significant stage of life cycle (the stages of construction and operation), original algorithm of adaptation (calibration) in accordance with measurements results, methodology of natural frequencies measurements and modal shapes and structural evaluation algorithm are under consideration for each approach. The main criterion for this adaptation is the correspondence of computed and measured spectrum of the natural frequencies and mode shapes in the entire frequency range, significant for the system-wide changes assessment and for possible defects localization.
