In this paper, self-organizing maps (SOM) with growing capability are proposed to evaluate the goodness of multispectral training areas selection that would be used in supervised classification processes. The SOM model used in this study is the Growing Cell Structures (GCS) neural network. Some modifications of the original GCS training algorithm are proposed in order to make easy the physical interpretation of their parameters. In addition, several visualization methods have been implemented with the aim of displaying the trained GCS networks. The performances of the modified GCS model have been investigated through a large number of experiments. They have been carried out using multispectral data registered by ETM+ sensor (Landsat 7), to discriminate land cover categories. The results confirm the excellent behavior of the GCS modified training algorithm to evaluate the quality of the selected training patterns, their viability for feeding supervised classification models and their refining.

Block (cyclic) channel coding standards for third generation cellular networks require the implementation of high-performance burst-error detection and correction algorithms. Galois field (GF) arithmetic is commonly used in this architecture for encoding and decoding error codes, however, many architectures still do not support dedicated functional units. This paper presents the design of a generic parallel finite-field GF (2/sup m/) multiplier targeted at DSP and embedded processors. As opposed to previous research, this design has the ability to utilize different primitive polynomials as an input, thereby, being able to be programmable. Moreover, a design is presented that is a combined binary and finite-field GF (2/sup m/) multiplier. Area, delay, and power dissipation results are presented from several ASIC libraries.

This work in progress describes the development of remote lecture demonstrations and experiments for communication engineering. The remote panel feature of LabVIEW is used to allow access to virtual instruments (VI's) through a web browser. The experiments, themselves are located in the laboratory, saving the time and effort off moving all the equipment to the classroom. Full experiments, rather than simulations of the phenomena are used. In the classroom the remote panels are accessed through a wireless Internet link. This work-in-progress will conclude with a discussion of several extensions of these ideas.

While there exist many kernel and user level libraries/systems which support checkpointing working processes and resuming their operations, it is still very difficult to provide an easy-to-use tool to assist checkpointing parallel applications. In this work, we aim at the development of an easy-to-use user-guided library to support checkpointing parallel MPI applications to be executed within the CLUSTERIX environment i.e. a collection of distributed HPC clusters. We propose a programmer-assisted approach with process state packing and unpacking at the code level for SPMD HPC applications. Although the library is in its early stage of development we present checkpoint/restart times and application execution (interrupted by checkpointing) times for the proposed approach compared to the same application linked with the ckpt user level library.

Geometric constraint problem is equivalent to the problem of solving a set of nonlinear equations substantially. The constraint problem can be transformed to an optimization problem. PSO is an evolution computing method. It searches the solution space by creating a better next swarm. The new swarm is produced based on the new individuals. Memory particle swarm algorithm is a PSO algorithm that adds a memory influence. We introduce MPSO into geometric constraint solving. The purpose of the added memory feature is to maintain spread and therefore diversity by providing individual specific alternate target points to be used at times instead of the current local best position. The experiment indicates that the algorithm is effective.
